BAC Community Practice - Fall'19

Page 1

COMMUNITY PRACTICE This course serves as an introduction to professional design practice and to the values and priorities of the design process at the BAC. Students work individually and collaboratively in a team on group projects. CP will use design projects as the vehicle for learning- focused on acquiring and practicing the skills of communication, collaboration and understanding their applications in the civic or public realm.

Business Model: The founder David, is a profeesor at Columbia GSSAP. As the firm focuses more on the research based projects, the research is supported by ideas and findings of students in the school. The framework can be extracted and be researched about in depth by students, hence expanding the resources involved in the firm.

Conclusion and Learnings: The business model of a firm impacts the functioning and types of projects that a firm can do. The stratergy for developing a successful firm, not only depends upon the talent and design quality of the designers but on the client base, business model and technical functionality of the firm as well. Its not always necessary for a successful project or product to be executed in real life. At times, ideas and new discoveries mark the work a success. By participating in competetions and taking part in events, benefit the firm’s reputation and success trajectory as well. Projects that focus on global issues rather then focused on a local and specific solutions need to be demonstrated require more then one experimentation, to prove it works in diverse conditions and has been designed with multiple considerations.

PROJECT STATEMENT “ Intervening in BAC’s most public space to increase the interaction between people, by engaging them in a designed product which requires team effort for completion and serves them a purpose” BIG IDEA

Modules for furniture

INTRODUCTION As Velox, the idea was to study BAC and observe a place for intervention. Most commonly used place in the school is loft, where all the people in the school can go at any time and do whatever they like, without any restrictions. As we observed and interviewed people, we realized that the furniture of the space is not flexible for diverse activities. Also, in a design school, as a common space, students should be in a space, which not only alllows any activity, but also inspires them to be different and think outside the box. If such a solution can get the students engaged in a new activity, people would have another reason to come to be a part of the space. Hence, we designed a module which could be rearranged and tailored as a piece of furniture according to the need of the person. If they want, it could be combined to make one for larger group of people too.

People interacting with the furniture and trying to arrange them according to their comforts and requirements CONCLUSION People enjoyed interacting with the module and wanted to add cushions as a part of the design, to make it more comfortable for anyone to use. This product can be used in any common spaces, in hostels, in schools, it could be used to teach kids about modular furniture pieces, and they can arrange it as a game, to learn about various things, and design whatever they want. These can be bigger and specific lego blocks for them.

Developed a design solution, by basing the design on the need of space, but at the same time ability for the module to have multiple uses. Designing the module, working out the different iterations and selecting the form of the module. Modelling it in 3D software, interviewing people, developing it to let people interact with it.

How did Velox arrive at the decision of making a hexagonal module vs. any other shape? To engage more people with the performances, a visual engagement persuades them to stay for longer then without it. People want something that could keep them engaged and involved in the performances.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROCESS

Learning from Community Practice Class: From learning to engage with group members and producing work together to getting the community involved with your projects, during this course I learned how to negotiate the terms of decisions with a bunch of different people, and how to accomodate everyone’s thoughts and work as a team, focusing on requirements and needs of the project/ community / issue, rather then thinking of a design first and fitting it into a proposal. Getting a feeback and reworking the proposal and ideas is how you design for the community, which lets them be involved in design decision, leaving them feel more comfortable, rather than alienated by the solutions.

Courtsey of Velox

Individual Growth during the Course: - Learning how to collaborate and learn from each other in a team, take in criticism and improving the project at all stages. - Analysing the needs of the community, by talking, researching and understanding the thought process behind their needs. - How to edit an attractive desing, to something which suits the requirements of the place or space - Different methods of engaging and interacting with people, other then just talking to them.

Courtsey of Velox

Future Growth because of the learnings in the Course: - Designing based only on the needs of the community, need of the area/space/ place and giving it the identify which community desires. - Demonstrating the process with improved graphics and comprehensive expression of process of the project. - Focus more on the process rather then the end product
