Drawing Parallels ↗ “This world is but a canvas to our imagination” — Henry David Thoreau Art imitates life while life instigates art. What we are is invariably reflected in what we do. We mostly draw inspiration and expression from our immediate environment and interactions in our day to day life. Therein exists a subtle yet complex parallel between our life experiences and our work which is inevitably entwined. Art is a palette of reality which finds expression in the most intimate aspects of our being within the circle of social life. Art speaks through a language of metaphors, evolves through a range of icons and manifests in significant visual relationships. The mind revels in metaphors because a metaphor draws parallels between separate entitles and makes connections between otherwise unrelated ideas. A metaphor helps us perceive that which we already understand and that which we are trying to understand. Art is not what we see but what we make others see!

Anger as Agony ↗ Objective To pick a meaningful word and illustrate the meaning with type. This should be as experimental as possible. Create your own type by typesetting it and then illustrate it.
↗ Strategy The word I chose was “Fury” and a video was used to illustrate it. The word Fury denotes anger and rage. It is defined as unrestrained or violent anger, rage or passion. To emphasize this, I typeset the word with matchsticks and set it on fire. I shot a video as the matchsticks burned until the fire died down showing how the fury was finally extinguished until no more. Project Video Animation

Play as Power ↗ Objective To choose a dying brand and redesign its brand identity to revive it and align it with the future. The objective included researching the brand history, profiling audiences, and structuring future vision that aligns with the soul of the brand and helps reinvent themselves.
↗ Strategy The brand that I chose was Barbie. The brand name of Barbie has been surrounded by many controversies related to an unhealthy body image and has become less relevant in today’s feminist world. Barbie as a brand has the potential to help adolescents deal with body image issues and can boost women empowerment. Barbie displays independence and shows little girls that they can be anything they dream of being.

Ruins as Rebirth 03
↗ Objective To develop a series of posters to promote a hypothetical architectural theme. This project was aimed to push the boundaries of type and to choose a single word that represents the concept of the event through hand-crafted letterforms.
↗ Strategy The theme I chose for the poster series was “Reinventing Greek Architecture.” I was inspired by 3 iconic design forms in history: the Golden Ratio, the Greek Columns, and the Labyrinth. I used the words Ratio, Rhythm, and Plan, to describe them.

Violence as Vaudeville ↗ Objective To design a project around a director of your choosing and showcase
04
a few of their selected works. To find a common thread that appears in each of their films, conceptualize a visual system, and create varied visual cues to make a cohesive visual and design language.
↗ Strategy The director I chose was Guy Ritchie who has won awards for the movies, “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” and “Snatch.” His movies are hard-hitting because they are not only violent and bloody but typically involve hand-to-hand combat. His themes usually involve misfits finding their way through luck, irony, and coincidences, barely escaping from the clutches of peril.

Travel as Truth ↗ Objective To identify a problem that can be solved through the design process. Research the problem, the audience profile and then create a cohesive visual language that works well across the system.
↗ Strategy
06
The problem I identified is how expensive it is for a student to travel. To solve this problem I created a brand called “Red Backpack.” We all want to see new places and experience new cultures. Being students, I understand the thrill and exhilaration that comes with exploring new countries and cities. Which is why at Red Backpack, our mission is to help students plan their vacations, and discover new places while minimizing the cost of starting a new adventure.

Type as Tech ↗ Objective To design a series of book covers that share a common theme. Each design must be dominated by the typographic treatment of the title. They must work together as a series.
↗ Strategy I chose to redesign high school computer textbooks as I found them incredibly boring and plain looking. The books I chose were
07
“Distributed Systems Architecture,” “Computer Architecture a Quantitative Approach,” and Digital Design and Computer Architecture.” I used the theme of the textbook to illustrate its title.

MFA THESIS ↗ Definition An MFA Thesis is the art or profession of visual communication that combines images, words, and ideas to convey information to an audience, especially to produce a specific effect. A master’s thesis is a self-directed body of work driven by numerous months of extensive research and analysis on any chosen topic by the master’s degree student. This project demonstrates a full range of the student’s design skills, thinking, and analysis as well as the ability to communicate a complex topic in a simple yet compelling and engaging manner.

↗ Background Overfishing is when more fish are caught than can be replaced through natural reproduction.
↗ The Problem Millions of people depend on fish as a source of protein and other fatty acids. However, increased fishing efforts over the last 50 years, as well as unsustainable fishing practices are pushing many fish stocks to the point of collapse. To explain why overfishing is a problem we first have to get an idea of the scale of the problem. Here are some figures published by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization 52% of fish stocks are fully exploited, 20% are moderately exploited, 17% are overexploited, 7% are depleted, 1% is recovering from depletion. We are at risk of losing a valuable food source that many depend upon for social, economic or dietary reasons. We are losing species as well as entire ecosystems. As a result, the overall ecological unity of our oceans is under stress and at risk of collapse. We are at risk of losing a valuable food source many depend upon for social, economical or dietary reasons.
