BARBIE

OUR HISTORY Background Barbie is a fashion doll manufactured by the American toy-company Mattel, Inc and launched in March 9th 1959. American businesswoman Ruth Handler is credited with the creation of the doll. Ruth Handler claimed her daughter Barbara, who was becoming a pre-teen, played with paper dolls by pretending they were adults. Handler noticed that in such play, children would act out future events, rather than the present. Handler noted the limitations of the paper dolls, including how the paper clothing failed to attach well. She wanted to produce a three-dimensional plastic “paper doll” with an adult body and a wardrobe of fabric clothing, but her husband and Mr. Matson thought parents would not buy their children a doll with a voluptuous figure.

Inspiration During a trip to Europe in 1956 with her children Barbara and Kenneth, Ruth Handler came across a German toy doll called Bild Lilli. The adult-figured doll was exactly what Handler had in mind, so she purchased three of them. She gave one to her daughter and took the others back to Mattel. Upon her return to the United States, Handler redesigned the doll (with help from engineer Jack Ryan) and the doll was given a new name, Barbie, after Handler’s daughter Barbara. The doll made its debut at the American International Toy Fair in New York on March 9, 1959. This date is also used as Barbie’s official birthday.

WHO WE WERE Body Image Her tiny waist and enormous breasts,it was estimated that if she were a real woman, her measurements would be 36-18-38–led many to claim that Barbie provided little girls with an unrealistic and harmful example and fostered negative body image. Despite the criticism, sales of Barbie-related merchandise continued to soar, topping 1 billion dollars annually by 1993. Since 1959, more than 800 million dolls in the Barbie family have been sold around the world and Barbie is now a bona fide global icon.

Positive Response On the positive side, many women saw Barbie as providing an alternative to traditional 1950s gender roles. She has had a series of different jobs, from airline stewardess, doctor, pilot and astronaut to Olympic athlete and even U.S. presidential candidate. Others thought Barbie’s never-ending supply of designer outfits, cars and “Dream Houses” encouraged kids to be materialistic. It was Barbie’s appearance that caused the most controversy, however. Over the years, Barbie generated huge sales–and a lot of controversy. On the positive side, many women saw Barbie as providing Through Barbie, dreams of adulthood could come true. The original Barbie sparked the worry and concern in parents because of her grown up appearance, and Barbie Dolls have inspired debate for decades among women’s groups who believe she should reflect real life women.

Barbie displayed independence and showed little girls that they could be anything they dreamed of. Barbie was seen providing an alternative to traditional 1950s gender roles. She displayed independence and showed little girls that they could be anything they dreamed of.

Creativity Barbie was created for girls to have an imaginative outlet. The creator of Barbie, Ruth Handler, wanted girls to be able to reflect themselves upon the doll and use it to spark their imagination. Barbie added a vogue look to the traditional role, leading a balanced lifestyle for young girls to follow. She taught women what was expected of them by society. Barbie could reinvent herself with simply a wardrobe change. She could go from doctor to housewife to a party. As Barbie evolved, she began to portray a new idea of life for women.

Diversity Barbie has had over 130 different careers that challenge the stereotypes. She’s been a doctor, astronaut, teacher, presidential candidate, CEO, athlete and military officer to name a few. Although Barbie has been known for being with the trends and in style with the times. Barbie was different than other dolls; she displayed independence and showed little girls that they could be anything they dreamed of. Through Barbie, dreams of adulthood could come true. 13

THE NEW LOGO The new logo for Barbie is a combination of a symbol and the word mark. The symbol has a stylized B which is part of the creative group and is combined with a star that shows empowerment. The Star symbolized purity and good luck. The overall mark showed empowerment. It is still a kid’s brand and the star helped add that spark to the logo mark.

Color Scheme The colors used for the logo will be Barbie blue, Barbie purple and Barbie pink. The Barbie purple represents creativity and the Pink represents femininity. By using just one color it allows the logo to stand boldly. Barbie will now be seen giving more importance to empowering women and promoting a healthy body image. Giving young girls the confidence they need to be anything they want to be.

BRAND COLORS These 3 colors are the brand colors. They are Barbie blue, Barbie purple and Barbie pink. The logo should never be seen in any other colors other than the exception of black or white. These are the colors that will be most recognizable for the brand. The new color palette has a range of colors that express confidence and empowerment. It is relatable in this modern world. The Barbie pink has a little bit of red added the feminine touch without it becoming too pink and girly. The purple was added as a sense of creativity, fantasy and more purpose driven. The last color blue was chosen as it is often associated with depth and stability. It symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence which relates to the soul of the brand.

87

BARBIE

One of the biggest advantages to taking self defense classes is the way it makes you feel afterwards. A lot of people are not confident with their abilities to protect themselves before they join a practice, or take classes. This can be due to personal experiences, as well as driven by the news. We hear a lot about the negativity in our society, and this can leave people feeling unprotected. Self defense classes will build confidence in yourself. If you are getting bullied, it is also a great way to protect yourself and grow confidence in yourself, ultimately molding you into a better person.

BARBIE LEADERSHIP The teen and tween years are awkward enough for anyone, but young girls have it especially rough. From online bullying to continually unrealistic beauty standards, it's no surprise that girls' self-esteem tends to plummet as soon as they're out of elementary school. It's time to take action against all the negativity young girls face For every type of young girl battling today’s societal standards the leadership program helps young girls to get them out of the house (and their comfort zones) and into a world of confidence. Because girls these days have to be prepared as ever to fight the power and be empowered and confident.
