DOUGLAS BUILDING WORKPLACE The idea is to increase transparency and visual connectivity amongst the five stories. The heart of the Douglas is a winter gardern, a rare feature in Southern California’s architecture. To take advantage of the existing winter garden and to increase the amount of natural sunlight, we extruded glass boxes into the center of the mass. The core is where light and nature are and people are naturally drawn to it. Not only do we gain more natural sunlight but we also have more access to other floors’ activities. It breaks the formality and rigidity of the existing building to be more airy, dynamic, flexible and transparent. Collaboration and gathering spaces are accompanied by heads down spaces going from the inner circumference of the core to the outer rim of the building.
4
THE SITE The Douglas Building is in proximity to the Grand Central Market and the historic Bradbury Building. It is around the corner on 3rd and Spring streets in downtown L.A. In an effort to preserve the historic value of the architecture, exteriors were completely untouched.

| WELLNESS + SPA
As the Los Angeles Arts District goes through intensive developments and gentrification, it is very important to not overlook the area’s history and unique characters. Carve Wellness + Spa takes on the idea of celebrating and featuring the building’s unique curve carved out by the old railroad spur. The goal is to reconnect the community and celebrate its history. As part of the wellness approach, it is crucial that we carve out time from our busy lives to be free from stress, to feel a sense of belonging and to feel more grounded. It is to better equip ourselves with a sense of purpose and to be ready to take on the next journey as we step out.

HYDROPONLET Climate change is one of the biggest issues in our modern age. In response to a more sustainable future, the objective of this project is to adapt the seven-story building located in the heart of West Hollywood, CA into a new Hydroponic Grow Center. It is an alternative lifestyle as well as a cultural hub to raise awareness in our urban community. The goal is to create a space that increases the end users’ mindfulness as they circulate as the space unfolds itself. Inspired by the master Tadao Ando’s approach in his works, the design creates a contemplating experience and connects with the users on an emotional and spiritual level as they enter the sacred core, which takes its form from water droplet, on the second level.

BELTRACCHI RESIDENCE The infamous German art forger had shaken the whole art world and conned millions of dollars out of his creations. Gifted as a mastermind, he never shies away from talking about his talents. There is a distinct center to the space to echo his boldness. His youthful and active nature calls for bright and vibrant colors. He enjoys entertaining with his guests. Therefore, both levels offer lounges that pertain to his lifestyle. The creative studio is on the lower level and is more secluded from everything else to allow Beltracchi to have tranquil painting time.

LIGHT TUNNEL Light tunnel is inspired by the interesting effects mirrors possess. Without electrical power, the project appears to be a flat wall art. As soon as electricity runs through, the piece becomes 3-dimensional. It’s like a tunnel suddenly decided to reveal its secret. The turn creates a more dramatic scene. It provokes curiosity and an urgency to go explore. Welcome to the illusional world.
