Autumn 14

BARBER CONCERTS DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM MUSIC SOCIETY

Birmingham International Piano Festival 2015

Hello!

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

The Autumn term at the University is always our busiest, and this year is no exception. We start off with 'Music in the Making' on 28 September, a day aimed at those of you who are interested in getting involved in University Music. With around 400 participants each year, this day promises to be a highlight in our Autumn calendar. It has been an exciting Summer as we have watched our new pipe organ being constructed and tested in the Elgar Concert Hall. We celebrate its launch with a weeklong festival (14-21 November) which includes two world premiere performances and features City Organist Thomas Trotter and University Organist Henry Fairs alongside various University ensembles. We continue to present some of the UK’s finest recitalists in the early stage of their careers in the Barber Lunchtime series, whilst the Barber Evening Concerts this term feature two of the UK’s most prolific artists, Sir Thomas Allen (baritone) and John Lill (piano), as well as an evening with Nova Music Opera, when they perform two newly commissioned chamber operas (page 7). We are also expanding our current programme of events and are delighted to announce the launch of Birmingham International Piano Festival 2015 (page 16), a three day festival featuring some of Europe’s finest pianists and the European Union Chamber Orchestra, with support from Yamaha, which will take place next March. We hope you enjoy the concerts on offer and will support both the Organ Festival and Birmingham International Piano Festival alongside our regular series of events. Jo Sweet Head of University Music and Concerts

At the age of 12, Peter Moore became the youngest ever winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition. As well as his new role as co-principal of the London Symphony Orchestra, he maintains a busy performing and recording schedule after success in the Wind section of last year’s ROSL competition. Robert is a multi-prizewinning accompanist and pianist in his own right who has performed to audiences worldwide. Two members of the YCAT scheme, Peter and Robert bring to the Barber an exciting programme which pushes the boundaries of trombone recital repertoire.

The newly-formed Incus Ensemble make their Barber debut as a trio in a varied programme. The jagged Hommage to Robert Schumann is framed by two contrasting German works, including Schumann’s last creative outburst of ‘Fairytales’ for this unusual grouping of instruments. Presteigne Festival’s annual city tour returns to the Barber bringing two rising stars and a varied programme including three living composers and some favourites of the clarinet and piano repertoire. Daniel Kidane's new work, Spear, was commissioned in association with the Royal Philharmonic Society for the 2014 Presteigne Festival.

The complexion of music in the seventeenth and first half of the eighteenth centuries was coloured and defined by the competing national music styles of France and Italy. This programme explores the two competing affects, tracing the journey of the fiery, extrovert Italian style to Paris, where a very different musical language was in vogue, and ultimately ending with their harmonious co-existence in the eighteenth century and beyond. Australian-born soprano Elizabeth Dobbin is joined by fellow Baroque specialist Anne Marie Dragosits for this performance.

Prometheus Drown'd is a chilling exploration of the strange circumstances surrounding the death of Percy Bysshe Shelley in 1822 at Livorno in Tuscany. Richard Williams has reworked the libretto from contemporary sources, using journals and diaries, and incorporating a number of Shelley’s own writings.

In Airborne we move to the Great War, where we meet Johnny, a pilot in the Royal Flying Corps, and Alice, a nurse in the Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve. The opera reflects their parallel experiences on 1 July 1916, allowing them to interact and sing and dance together as their minds go back to the high spots of their deepening love affair; both anticipate and then witness the tragic debacle that was the Battle of the Somme.

The poem was published in The Times on 21st September 1914, with the opening stanza: ‘With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children, England mourns for her dead across the sea. Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit, Fallen in the cause of the free.’ The second half of the concert moves us to contemporary composer Howard Goodall and his requiem Eternal Light.
