Results from a recent phone survey conducted by LeisurePlan International suggest Greater Napanee could move forward to the next phase of building an indoor pool at the Strathcona Paper Centre location. That’s according to LeisurePlan’s John Stevenson, who is project director with the Toronto-based consulting firm the town has retained to determine the feasibility of building a public pool. He presented his findings to council on Tuesday. He stated that 185 children aged 0-19 and 368 adults aged 20-64 who were surveyed support the notion that the town should move to the next phase of their plan. The random survey conducted earlier this year asked respondents questions such as whether they’d use an indoor aquatics facility, what types of programs they’d take part in and where the most preferred location for an indoor pool would be for them. “We conclude that based on the findings of the market research and the magnitude and characteristics of the potential future demand identified for participation in indoor

New Rotary Park playground unveiled

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

A tight deadline and several days of less-than-ideal building weather wasn’t enough to delay the grand opening of the new playground structure at Rotary Park in Napanee Friday night. A large turnout of young and old alike were on hand to check out the new play

space on Pearl Street, which is accessible and boasts the traditional slides, jungle gym and swings mixed with a natural playground, musical courtyard and glider to compliment the pre-existing splash pad. Initially spearheaded by the Napanee Rotary Club, the project won the support of the municipality. Later, the scope of the project got bigger with contributions from Canada 150 and from

TransCanada, which each put $125,000 toward the endeavour. “I drove up here and I was like ‘Oh my lord, it’s real,’” said Hastings, Lennox and Addington MP Mike Bossio who was on hand to help christen the park. “Build it and they will come and that’s exactly what happened today. Hopefully they will come again and again, generation after generation. This is what

builds our rural communities, this is partnership between different levels of government, between private and public to create this incredible playground we have here.” The grand opening also served as the official launch of Greater Napanee’s annual Riverfront Festival, which was also well-attended throughout Friday and Saturday. Napanee’s Rotary Club

“Today is the realization of a thought that we had about a year ago and a committee of Rotarians that came together to propose this to the town.” Craig also called on any local business who wanted to sponsor equipment within the park to contact Rotary. He says those sponsors can have their name attached to different sections throughout the playground.

had set the ambitious goal of having the park completed in time for the festival back in March, before they had even dug a shovel into the ground. Though a wetter-than-average spring made it interesting, the crew at Wentworth Landscapes came through and allowed Rotary to keep their promise. “We are so proud of our community at Rotary,” said club president Tim Craig.

Aboriginal schools get $56M boost

BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

Ontario’s Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Development Deb Matthews visited Tyendinaga’s First National Technical Institute’s aviation training campus last Wednesday to announce the provincial government would be investing $56 million into Aboriginal Institutions over the next three years. Speaking inside an airplane hanger surrounded by FNTI aviation students, Matthews said the investment would allow nine AIs across the province to expand and reach more students. “Aboriginal Institutions offer learning environments for students that are safe, that are culturally appropriate, close to home that are run and governed by Indigenous communities,” said Matthews, who is also Deputy Premier. “Far more than just skills and knowledge are taught here. Aboriginal Institutions help students achieve their

Matthews says Wednesday’s investment will quadruple the province’s previous investment. She says the investment is part of the province’s response to the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

“What this means is that AIs will be able to expand their capacity, grow in their role as a distinct and important pillar in Ontario’s post-secondary education system,” said Matthews. Matthews also took the opportunity to announce that the Ontario government would be making some changes to OSAP, which is used by 55,000 Aboriginal students to help pay their post-secondary tuition fees. She says Indigenous students will now no longer have to pay

$3,000 student contribution to OSAP. Matthews says the funding will not only help the Aboriginal community, but benefits the province as a whole as it helps to create a more skilled labour force. “Someone earlier said to me the best way to reduce crime is education,” said Matthews. “Every dollar we spend in education gives us a multitude of benefits. Better health, better wellbeing. It’s the foundation in everything. We share a common goal. We want to create meaningful life-long opportunities that help all Indigenous students develop the skills and training they need to fulfill their dreams and reach their goals.” Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte Chief Don Maracle noted that a lack of funding over the years has put the FNTI at risk of closing, and Wednesday’s announcement was desperately needed. He says it’s critical to his community to have a safe place for youths to obtain higher education.

Museum planning ‘fashionable’ look at Canadian history Beaver Staff

Historical fashion expert Diane Gallinger will be the guest speaker at next week’s Tuesday at the Museum as she looks back at 150 years of fashion in Canada. She’ll speak to some of the items currently on display at the Lennox and Addington County Museum and Archives, as she’s a guest curator for the ‘Crinolines and Confederation’ exhibit. Her talk will also focus on the various fashion trends over the decades that have made up Canada’s 150 years as a country. From Queen Victoria to Jimi Hendrix to Melania Trump, she’ll look at what the fashion of the time said about nationalism, political ambition, social progress and popular protest. Tickets for the talk, which gets underway at 7

p.m., are $3 at the museum door. The museum is located at 97 Thomas Street E in Napanee. Also currently at the museum is a collection of 14 Sampson-Matthews Canadian Collection silkscreen prints, which portray Canadian landscapes. That exhibit will run until Oct. 15. A leading graphic art company from 1942-1963, Sampson-Matthews Ltd. was once one of the largest public art projects in Canada. The prints showed a mastery of the silkscreen techniques and used up to 10 to 20 different oil colours in each print. The prints are credited with enhancing public knowledge of Canadian art and the national identity throughout the 1940s to 1960s, and they continue to be valued as works of art in their own right to this day.

NOTICE OF DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION REPORT SUBMISSION Design Build for the Improvements of the Amherst Island Ferry Docks Millhaven and Amherst Island, Loyalist Township DB 2015-4199 THE PROJECT Rankin Construction Inc. (RCI) and their design consultant Morrison Hershfield (MH) were selected by the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) to undertake the Detail Design Study and construct the improvements to the Amherst Island ferry docks (see Key Plan). The project includes converting the existing side-loading ramps to end-loading, in order to accommodate the Frontenac II and the new Amherst Island ferry. This will allow for easier access to and from the island, improve the overall efficiency of ferry operations and to better accommodate the increasing number of large commercial trucks and farm equipment. The ferry service improvements will include: endloading ramps; a larger paved parking area to accommodate more vehicles; sidewalks and increased separation between pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles; an upgraded bubbler system for winter ice control around the docks; and new terminal buildings with public restrooms, covered bike racks, and staff offices. The study has followed the planning process for a Group ‘B’ project under the Class Environmental Assessment for Provincial Transportation Facilities (2000). Public Information Centres were held in Stella and Millhaven in April 2017. Design and Construction Report A Design and Construction Report (DCR) has been prepared and is now available for review and comment. The DCR provides background information about the study, presents the proposed improvements to the Amherst Island Ferry Docks, describes construction staging and proposed mitigation, and provides an overview of the consultation that occurred throughout the study. The DCR is available for a 30-day public review starting June 21, 2017 and ending July 21, 2017. Please inform the Project Team members listed below if you have any comments or concerns with the project, or the findings of the DCR. The project will be eligible to proceed to construction in summer 2017 following the completion of the 30-day public review period and acquiring permits and approvals. The Project Team will respond to all comments generated during the 30-day public review; however there is no opportunity to request a Part II Order (‘bump-up’) from the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change. Electronic versions of the DCR are available for review on the project website at: www.amherstislandferrydocks.ca. The DCR is also available in hard copy for review at the following locations:

NDSS earns kudos from Queen’s University BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter Kind words from teachers in training earned NDSS a prestigious award last week as the local high school was named Queen’s University’s Associate School of the Year. Awarded by Queen’s Faculty of Education, the award recognizes NDSS as an outstanding host school for students completing their Bachelor of Education who are looking to fulfill their mandatory classroom placement. During their placement the teacher candidates are given the opportunity to teach in a

classroom setting under the supervision of experienced teachers. “Associate schools receive teacher candidates and train them to be teachers,” explains Nadine Thompson, practicum officer with Queen’s University. “Practicum is a big part of the bachelor of education.” Each year the university asks students to nominate high schools or elementary schools they feel deserve recognition for their support during their in-class training. “(NDSS) has been a great supporter of our program,” said Michael Howe, a Queen’s University professor. “The teaching staff have been very

open and engaged with our students. The associate teachers have been outstanding to work with. The school liaison vice-principal Stacey Robb has been extremely helpful with finding excellent placements for our students… NDSS is an excellent school and we are fortunate that they support our program to the extent that they do.” Lauren Steele, who recently completed her placement within NDSS’ English department also spoke highly of its associate school partnership. “(NDSS’) friendly, inclusive and collaborative environment makes NDSS a phenomenal high school in which

teacher candidates may thrive in,” wrote Steele. “NDSS is so much more than a host school; it is a rich opportunity for personal and professional development and a place where learning starts with you.”

Queen’s presented NDSS with a plaque last week to commemorate its achievement. Thompson says the Napanee school has done a lot over the years to help develop the next generation of teachers.

New pool an elusive goal When it comes to the question of getting a new indoor pool, it seems as though Greater Napanee is treading water. On Tuesday night, council heard the results of a survey of Greater Napanee residents regarding demand for an indoor aquatics facility. That survey showed that, if it’s built, a good number of those residents, young and old, would use it. But didn’t we already go through this back in 2012? Five years ago, Greater Napanee conducted a survey of its residents then and, like now, a good number of residents said they’d use it if it were built. Many even said that they’d be willing to swallow a small increase in their property taxes to make the indoor pool a reality. The prospect of a new pool was a big issue in the last municipal election campaign, and the campaign before that; as things are shaping up right now, it’s not a stretch to imagine that it’ll be a big issue in the next campaign, too. Like we said: treading water. This isn’t really a criticism but merely a reflection of difficult realities. First off, we have no doubt that there’s a significant desire for a new indoor pool in the municipality, and we know why many local residents want a pool, too: besides the pure recreation such a facility would afford, it’s a great place to get some exercise and for children to learn life-saving skills. And, it’d be a great community resource to retain and attract young families. But indoor pools are expensive. They’re expensive to build and they’re expensive to operate. Given ever-increasing pressure on the municipality to stretch tax dollars further, and given the fact that Greater Napanee — like every other municipality in eastern Ontario — is having a hard time keeping up with the maintenance of existing infrastructure, a commitment to build and operate a new indoor pool is, understandably, one that council is reluctant to make. Unless funding is found from other sources — the provincial and/or federal government, or the private sector — it’s entirely conceivable that Greater Napanee will continue to tread water on this issue for the foreseeable future. Despite this somewhat bleak assessment, we don’t think it’s a lost cause. If there’s anything from which to draw inspiration, it’s the establishment of the new (and impressive) playground at Rotary Park, which opened this weekend. While the project cost around $500,000, most of the financial resources came from other sources, a Rotary Club fundraising campaign, a contribution from the federal government and a contribution from TransCanada among them. A pool will cost (significantly) more than a playground, both in terms of construction and operating costs, but the formula is there. If Greater Napanee residents want an indoor pool badly enough, they can make it happen. Ideally, the next phase of study — should council decide to take that next step — will provide a suitable map. However, it seems as though we’re sailing through eerily familiar waters, due to the fact that the barriers to turning an indoor pool from dream to reality are, and will continue to be, hard to overcome.

Staff Picks: The Chilbury Ladies Choir Marg from the Napanee Branch recently enjoyed reading The Chilbury Ladies’ Choir, the debut historical fiction novel by author Jennifer Ryan. “It is somewhat reminiscent of Coles one of my alltime favorite books Letters from Skye by Jessica Brockmole,” says Marg. “It is set during the outbreak of the Second World War in England and it is written in epistolary narrative (a series of letters and journal entries). “The women of a small village near Dover, England called Chilbury are living in uncertain times and learn-

ing to cope with their changing lives as their husbands, fathers and sons head off to war. The one thing that ties the women together is their church choir. When the vicar Notes declares that the choir has to disband because there are no men left to sing in it the ladies, led by feisty choir-master Prim, refuse to have that happen. They believe that the choir performances will help to keep the morale up and lift the spirits of the community members. The choir works together perfecting their songs so they can enter a

competition which they end up winning much to the astonishment of everyone involved.”

Abusing handicapped parking spots

Adam Prudhomme-Staff

Caden Holmes volunteered his driving services during the Lennox and Addington County General Hospital’s annual golf tournament, held Wednesday in Napanee. For a small donation, he would tee off for competitors on the first hole. The tournament raised more than $35,000 for the hospital foundation.

Over the course of the last three-and-a-half years I have suffered four compression fractures in my back. Among other things this had resulted in very limited mobility, including walking for any distance. My doctor has been kind enough to provide me with a permit to place in the window of our van, which gives us the privilege of handicapped parking. Obviously this reduces the amount of walking I must do to reach the location where we shop. The problem is that half the time no such spaces are available. And it’s not because others which have some similar afflictions are taking up those slots. Boldas-brass people with no such license have taken those spots, leaving me, and others like me, to walk from whatever other spaces are

available, regardless of how far they are from the store. A month ago we drove into a mall lot to find a young man driving a big 4x4 backing out of the ‘expectant mothers’ reservation. And no, there was not a lady with him, old or young. They talk about chivalry being dead — so it courtesy. It seems 50 per cent of shoppers are more interested in convenience for themselves than they are about consideration of those with special needs. ‘It’s all about me!’, indeed! Perhaps a stroll by bylaws officers in larger parking lots in shopping malls, on a regular basis, might catch some of these intruders with their ‘me first’ slips showing. It’s amazing how a fine will jog the memory. Grace Goodhand, Greater Napanee

Kindness in the park I attended the Riverfront Multicultural Festival this past weekend. I must get around with the use of a walker, and my walker has a seat on it. I was seated, watching and enjoying one of the acts when, due to the amount of rain of late and the ground being saturated, one of the walker’s wheels sank into the ground. Much to my very

great embarrassment, over I went, and I ended up on my back. Several people, all strangers to me, came to my rescue. A man’s hand was offered to help me up, and some women were concerned of my welfare and made sure was OK. Once I was on my feet, one of the ladies helped me by getting me a seat at a table. She

offered to get me a hot dog and also gave me a dessert. Still swimming in my humiliation, I neglected to get anybody’s name. I continued to enjoy the show. I now take this time to thank these individuals for their kindness in the park. Phillip MacDonald, Greater Napanee during distressing times,” she concludes. “I would suggest this book to fans of historical fiction.” You can reserve The Chilbury Ladies’ Choir in print, large print, e-book and e-audiobook formats from CountyLibrary.ca. A trip through the pages of The Napanee Beaver 65 Years Ago June 11, 1952 ■ Conceptual drawings for the proposed new Napanee Memorial Community Centres were put on display at The Napanee Beaver office. The drawings, featured in the front office window, were generating a fair amount of public interest. Produced by Napanee’s Mansell Goodwin, the drawings showed the new arena to be almost 220 feet in length and 120 feet in width. One entrance would house the office for the arena manager, while the other would serve as the ticket booth. A site for the new community centre still had to be determined. ■ The federal government announced that it would be increasing the amount paid to those receiving unemployment insurance, from a maximum of $21 a week to a maximum of $24 a week. Similar increases would be seen in other wage categories. Minister of Labour Milton Gregg indicated that there wouldn’t be an increases into the unemployment insurance fund as part of the change. A change to labour legislation would also make it illegal to discriminate against those seeking employment.

35 Years Ago June 16, 1982 ■ Speaking at a Human Services Conference in northern L&A, Professor Arthur Stinson of Carleton University compared the problems of eastern Ontario to those facing underdeveloped thirdworld countries. He said that, as third-world countries were realizing, solutions must be appropriate to local circumstances, not those solutions which are imposed from the outside. He also said that “modernization for everyone” is not possible because of finite resources. Modern nations are in deep trouble and no longer considered ideal models to emulate, he added. ■ An Ernestown Secondary School student was winning national awards for his windsurfer design. Henry Fierz’s windsurfer won three top awards, including the gold medal, at a recent Canada-wide Science Fair at York University. The project actually began four years earlier when, after getting a windsurfer, he decided he should try to find a way to make it lighter. He said it took him about 50 hours to design the new model, and about 300 hours to complete its construction over the course of about a year-and-ahalf.

Councillors Mike Schenk and Roger Cole raised some concern as to the number of people surveyed and the means in which they were contacted. Both stated they felt the

Stevenson responded that the number surveyed was within the ‘industry standard’ to confidently project how the rest of the population would respond, and also noted that they contacted people via cellphone as well as landlines. “This wasn’t a poll,” said Stevenson. “This wasn’t like

This work may cause rust coloured water to appear from taps at or near the area of work. If this occurs, remove the aerator from the tap and let the water run for a few minutes, after which it should run clear. Then replace the aerator. The flushing schedule will be posted in this column throughout the season. WATER MAIN FLUSHING SCHEDULE WEEK

own to their final out of the season, trailing by 14 runs and still without a hit in Thursday’s KASSAA semifinal game, the NDSS Golden Hawks baseball team turned to an unlikely source to provide a spark. In stepped Jason McCracken, who had missed the entire season due to an ailing back. He delivered in a big way, connecting for a double that sailed over the head of the Holy Cross Crusaders centrefielder. Ryan Smith followed with an infield single and Mike McInnes drove in McCracken with a single to cut the Crusaders’ lead to 14-1. There would be no miraculous comeback however as the game ended two batters later, with the Crusaders clinching the 14-1 victory, advancing to the finals while relegating the Hawks to a third place finish, their second best in the history of the school’s baseball program. “We ended with a rally, no-hitter going against us, Jay McCracken’s been on the injured reserve and he’s been helping coach all year," said Hawks head coach Daryl Sheffield. "He started begging me last night to go in, I said it had to be a certain situation and there it was. Throw Jay in then we rally and score. A nice moment there, add some energy and fun back into it.” The Hawks couldn’t get anything going over the first three innings as the Crusaders pitching was just too much. At the plate the Crusaders did most of their damage in the third inning, putting the game out of reach quickly. The Crusaders continued to mash in the KASSAA finals on Monday, routing

The Loyalist Mavericks hosted the Chargers under the lights at NDSS on Friday for a well-attended Belleville Minor Football League game. The Chargers showed why they are the top team in the league, besting the Mavericks 32-8. Mavericks quarterback Keegan Frost, seen above rushing the ball, had a 45-yard pass to Owen Chapman. Rookie Jason Fretts was strong on the defensive line. (Bottom photo) Loyalist’s Gavin Goodfellow attempts a catch that is blocked by a Chargers defender. Now at 2-4 on the season, the Mavericks will face the Red Devils on the road this Friday to close our the regular season with the playoffs beginning next week. They are sixth in the eight-team league.

NDSS had advanced to the semifinals the day before, besting the Ernestown Eagles 6-3 in the quarter-finals. The game was scheduled on a moment’s notice after the previous day had been washed out by rain. The

Hawks responded however with Andrew Tucker and Austin Dunham teaming up to shutdown the Ernestown bats for the victory. Thursday’s loss ended an odd baseball season for the Hawks, who saw a good portion of their season get cancelled due to rain. They played just four KASSAA

games all year, two of which were playoff games. Overall they were 3-1. “It’s a great bunch of kids,” said Sheffield. “Unfortunately we didn’t get to play as much as we wanted but they got better each time we played.

In their first Tournament of the year, the Boyer GM U12 Napanee Express Boys had a tremendous start to their 2017 season over the weekend by winning the 2017 Napanee Combo Tournament that took place at the Napanee Fairgrounds. Led by exceptional pitching performances from Brandon Barker and Derek Li, a solid defense and blazing bats, the Express rolled through the tournament in convincing fashion. Joining the Napanee Express for the tournament were teams from Bridgenorth, Oshawa, Tweed, Frontenac County and West Carlton. Early Saturday morning, the Express faced the Frontenac County Bulldogs in their first of three games in the one day tournament. The boys started the tournament with their bats on fire, scoring seven runs in the first two innings which lead to an eventual 8-3 victory. In Game 2, the Express faced a well-coached West Carlton team. Once again, the Express roared down the tracks quickly – scoring 11 runs in the first two innings to trounce West

ASSELSTINE - In memory of Jean Asselstine. April 1933 - June 2016 God saw you getting tired, So He put His arms around you And took you home As he always takes the best. Always in our hearts and minds, Never far away. Love Neil, Valerie, grandchildren Michael, Stephanie, Michele, Troy, Trevor, Amy, Christopher and Pam. KIMMETT - In loving memory of a dear son, father, grandfather, brother and brother-in-law, Rob Kimmett, who left us June 14, 2009. You gave no one a last farewell, Nor even said goodbye, You were gone before we knew it And only God knows why. A million times we will miss you, A million times we will cry, If love alone could have saved you You never would have died. In life we loved you dearly, In death we love you still, In our hearts you hold a place No one else can fill. It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn’t go alone, For part of us went with you The day God took you Home. We will meet again someday, Gone but never forgotten. Love, Mom, Dad, Tyler, Ryden, Jason, Devon, Shawn, Liz, Annette and Jack.

She grew up and received her early schooling in Halifax. She graduated from Mount St. Vincent where she made life long friends. After graduating, she joined the

Four years later they moved to Napanee to the house the family lived in until the ravages of Parkinson's disease forced Mary June into a nursing home, where she spent the last year of her life. Three years after moving to Napanee their daughter Janelle was born. While living in Napanee, Mary June was an active volunteer and canvassed for many charitable organizations. She also helped out frequently at blood clinics. She was a long time member of the Catholic Woman's League and enjoyed their meetings and activities. She enjoyed swimming at the indoor pool, long walks with her beloved dogs, gatherings with friends, and especially yearly trips to her native Nova Scotia. When the family was young they enjoyed spending time at Sandbanks Provincial Park. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Napanee on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at 1pm. Interment to follow at St. Patricks Cemetery. The family invites you to join them for a Reception from 2:30pm-3:30pm at the Wartman Funeral Home, Napanee Chapel. ‘Bicycle Built For Two’ The song ‘A Bicycle Built for Two’ — sometimes entitled ‘Daisy Bell’ — was written by an Englishman after he had migrated to American in 1891. Songwriter Henry Dacre had hoped to find more success in the new world than he had in his native British Isles. When he arrived in New York he brought his bicycle with him, and was shocked (and greatly agitated) to find that he had to pay duty on his two-wheeler. He complained to almost everyone who would give ear about this ‘injustice’; and, when he mentioned it to a friend, (songwriter William Jerome), he was taken aback by his reply: “Just be thankful that it is not a bicycle built for two, or you’d have had to pay double duty!” It may not have quieted

Glen R. Goodhand Musical Memories his griping, but it did produce the seed thought which resulted in the song featured in this column. He had become aware of the bicycle craze sweeping the USA, not only among men, but among women as well. He was quite taken by the fashion-setting garb which was being adopted by ladies to make this new sport convenient for them. One historian claims that the bloomer-type trousers (along with the billowy shirts with puffy sleeves) was the beginning of ladies wearing slacks. The alternate title found its inspiration in the person of ‘Daisy’ Greville, the mis-

tress of King Edward VII, who was a cycling enthusiast. Dacre had trouble finding takers for his ditty in America. Finally he showed it to Katie Lawrence, a soloist whom he had met in London. She love it immediately, and featured it in her tour of Britain. Suddenly he had no problem selling it in his adopted country, and its popularity quickly accelerated there as well. Vaudeville soloist Tony Pastor became the first to perform it this side of the ocean. Jennie Lindsay was next. And in more modern times, Alvin and the Chipmunks and Nat King Cole utilized its timeless popularity. It found its way to television, on M*A*S*H*, Dr. Who, The Simpsons and 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Inspiration in the skies The sleek, white airplane was cruising across the cornflower blue, cloudless sky at about 13,000 feet when they opened the door. My heart was thumping and bumping so wildly in my chest that I could count its pulsations in my temples, as it forcefully sent blood cascading around my body. I have little recollection of my tandem partner and I waddling our way to the opening, in the back section of the plane, where the wind was whistling frantically above the roar of the engine. Despite the sense of panic welling up inside me, I swallowed it down, closed my eyes... and in the next moment we were free falling. If you’d asked me earlier that morning if I‘d have found myself hurtling through the sky towards Earth at roughly 190 km/hr that afternoon, I’d have called you crazy. I found myself at the Drop Zone on that warm and sunny June afternoon to watch our middle child, Benny, engage in his newest passion: skydiving. Benny is a determined, seemingly fearless young man, constantly searching out new hobbies and interests to satisfy his thrill-seeking spirit. I, on the other hand, had a strong aversion to dangerous pursuits. I was neither fond of heights or flying. This made the situation I found

Laurie Snider Notes From The Nest myself in even more ironic. After our third child Ellie was born, I became ill with a diagnosis both puzzling and debilitating. For over 20 years, there have been a multitude of mountains to climb and valleys to rise out of. Infirmity sideswipes us when we least expect it. The battles we face as a result, are not only physical but also mental and emotional. We suddenly find ourselves on a completely different trajectory for our lives and those of our families, than we expected. Dealing with loss of expectations and learning to accept ‘life on life’s terms,’ aren’t easy lessons. The path towards them is often jagged and it’s necessary to sidestep many sharp rocks along the way. Conversely, there are many opportunities for growth, resilience and selfdiscovery. This is why I found myself stuffed inside the crowded cabin of an airplane, with an excited group of skydiving enthusiasts, strapped tightly to a young man I’d only just met. It was difficult not to get caught up in the zeal and fer-

vor. This was a happening crowd. Both ladies and gentlemen were strutting around in flashy jumpsuits, parachutes strapped to their backs, a swagger in their steps and positively oozing, ‘cool.’ This must have been why, after a certain amount of chiding on their parts to join in, I gave my rather fainthearted affirmation. To be clear, this was not on my ‘bucket list.’ Mine has items like visiting Highclere castle in England, raising bees and getting a few chickens. Jumping out of a perfectly good plane was not on it! The fact I didn’t have a great deal of time to chew on this was a good thing. This would have given me too much time to think about the risks and rationalizations. Instead I followed my gut. I wanted to test my limits, challenge my norms and have my ‘outward bound’ moment and I knew I needed to do this before I chickened out. I definitely had a wave of terror and self-questioning about my rash decision during the flight up. The fake ‘barrel roll’ joke played on me, to the delight of my fellow passengers, only added to my apprehension, but I was determined not to back out. Many people prior to exiting, take a moment to take in the surroundings. Not me. I squeezed my eyes shut and surrendered, letting the inevitable happen. When I opened my eyes, my hair was flowing above me at a 90 degree angle. I was caught between trying to hold my breath and screaming at the same time, as my good natured instructor and I, careened towards the planet below. Then just as suddenly, he pulled the chute and we were floating, bobbing aimlessly, above the fields, rivers and meadows below. I was awestruck. My fear evaporated on the sunkissed breeze and was replaced with a sense of elation and peace. The warm, swirling air surrounding us, gently carried us back to terra firma. I collapsed in a heap, lying on my back, hugging the ground with my outstretched arms feeling relieved, proud, euphoric and glowing. Would I ever go skydiving again? Probably not — but I will definitely continue to push my limits. The rewards are amazing.

Enjoyable ways to spend Father’s Day Many dads and father figures will attest that Father’s Day is special because they get to spend it with their families. While the gifts might be nice, it’s the time together that dads truly cherish. Family members who want to make Father’s Day extra special this year may want to put extra effort into customizing Father’s Day fun rather than shopping for gifts. So what equates to a fun-filled and enjoyable day for fathers? That all depends on Dad’s interests. While no two fathers are the same, there are some universal ideas that can make for a memorable Father’s Day.

Rest and relaxation Fathers do a lot for their families, and many fathers have hectic daily schedules. Come Father’s Day, Dad may just desire a day when he’s not called on to do anything. Provide this for him by removing many of the responsibilities that can bog your father down. This includes chores that may be tackled on Sundays or even responsibilities that Mom often relies on him to tackle.

Favourite activity Plan the day around an activity that Dad enjoys. If he’s an avid fisherman, this could mean taking the rods out and spending a few hours seeing what’s biting. Or it may involve attending a ballgame, watching his favourite movie or playing a few rounds of golf. Father’s Day is a special day that many fathers would insist is even better when spent with family.

Special dinner On this special day, Dad may deserve a dinner that stands apart from more routine family meals. A specially cooked meal that the entire family prepares together or a reservation at a favourite restaurant will no doubt bring a smile to Dad’s face. Make sure that the meal includes his favourite foods.
