SHOW OFF YOUR SPIRIT THIS SUMMER!
The community is rallying to support a family as it copes with unimaginably tragedy. Garrett Mills, a 15-year-old Napanee boy, died while playing with friends at the King Street Park late Friday afternoon. The Coroner’s Office, with the support of the Napanee OPP, is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the boy’s death. “For those of you who knew him, you know what a bright shining light he was and how horribly we miss him. We are numb and broken,” his father, Dave, stated in a Facebook post under his stage name ‘Buzz Collins’ on Saturday morning. “Our hearts have been crushed. We have never experienced a pain as horrible as this,” he said. In another post, Dave said that the support the family has received since Friday, “from words of condolence to meals prepared and delivered, has been very much appreciated.” An obituary for Garrett stated that his “greatest desire was to brighten the lives of those he encountered in his everyday life,” and that, along with becoming a professional photographer, Garrett “wanted to make a difference in the world.”

401 crash sends four to hospital
TRAGEDY | Visitation takes place today CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 He is also survived by mother Gwen, sisters Brooklynne and Eliyah and brother Landon. The flag at Napanee District Secondary School where Garrett was a Grade 9 student was at half-staff this week. In a statement to the Beaver, the Limestone District School Board expressed its condolences to the Mills family and friends: “The community has suffered a tragic loss. There are many connections to Garrett within the school community and other schools in the Limestone District School Board. Our thoughts are with everyone who knew Garrett.” The school board indicated that steps were being taken to “ensure students and staff receive the support they may need as a result of this tragedy,”

adding that counsellors from the board’s educational services department have been made available to both students and staff for as long as needed. “Our affected schools will be concentrating on supporting close friends and classmates who may find this news very difficult to understand and accept,” the statement read. “Other students are also likely to be upset, perhaps because it reminds them of another sad event in their own life. Because of this, our schools have supports in place for any students if they feel they can’t be in the classroom over the next few days or just need to talk to someone. Parents are encouraged to contact school staff for information about the school’s support plan, or if they have any concerns about their child. Schools will also help connect families to community supports for students should parents feel this would be of help.”
Since Friday’s tragedy, donation jars have been set up at several businesses around Napanee, including Castle Building Centre, TCO Agromart, MyFM, Shear Image, Dance Extreme, Sparklean Home and Office, Canadian Tire Napanee, Tamworth Gas and Variety, McCormick’s Store, Remax Realty, Hart n’ Hart, Exit Realty, Royal Coachman, Wagar and Myatt Realty and Gray’s IDA. Further, a bank account has been established in memory of Garrett at the Napanee Scotiabank branch. More information can be found on the ‘A Gift for Garrett’ Facebook page. Visitation is scheduled to take place today from 2-4 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m. at Wartman Funeral Home. A funeral service is set for tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Evangel Temple at 320 Bridge St. W. in Napanee. Donations to the Napanee Humane Society are also being requested.

Four people were sent to hospital following a collision on Highway 401 near Deseronto Road last Wednesday. The accident happened at around 4 p.m. in the eastbound lanes. According to police, a double tanker truck carrying diesel fuel and animal fat rolled over. The driver of the truck was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The car involved in the collision was on the south shoulder; the driver was ejected during the crash. The driver was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Two female passengers were sent to hospital by ambulance with minor injuries. The accident caused an eight-hour closure of the highway. A diesel spill was contained by Greater Napanee Emergency Services.

Eco group says education needed on spray program Editor
With a comprehensive roadside spraying program for wild parsnip about to begin, the Lennox and Addington Stewardship Council wants county property owners to know they can opt out of having the roadsides in front of their property sprayed. The group issued a press release to that effect last week in an effort to drum up public awareness for the spraying program, which is being undertaken by Lennox and Addington County and its lower-tier municipalities along rural roadsides. According to L&A County Manager of Roads and Bridges, Chris Wagar, the spraying program will start no earlier than May 29. The county will be using Clearview, deemed by the Pest Management Regulatory Agency to be the least toxic spraying option designed to tackle wild parsnip — a proliferating invasive species that’s gained notoriety for the painful, blistering rashes that it can cause. Marilyn Murray of the L&A Stewardship Council acknowledges the “nasty rash” wild parsnip can inflict, but suggests the county should have taken a pass on spraying altogether, and opted for mechanical solutions — cutting — rather than chemical solutions. In a telephone interview Tuesday, Murray said the stewardship council is concerned that the area’s
groundwater could be impacted by the spraying program. “They will argue that it’s within the limit allowed within the (PMRA), which is part of Health Canada, but we don’t want any of it in there. We already have a cocktail of pesticides that they’re measuring,” she said. In its press release, the stewardship council said Clearview “is highly soluble in water and could easily enter our waterways through the ditches next to our roads. According to Dr. James Coupland, an agricultural research biologist from Almonte, Clearview takes a long time to break down, and it can travel through a water system for months damaging or killing native plants (including milkweed) and threatening our pollinators. Clearview is highly toxic to aquatic organisms in particular.” Murray said that the permeable soil found in this area compounds the problem. She also added that, since municipalities are unable to deal with wild parsnip on private property, simply ridding the weed from roadsides won’t eliminate the problem. Murray said that the council had a “great conversation” about the spraying program with Wagar, but acknowledged that it was all-but-impossible to get the county to change course. In the meantime, the council wants to spread the word about the fact that homeowners in rural areas can direct the county to not spray the roadsides adjacent to their property, as long as they sign an agree-
ment to cut down any wild parsnip that happens to sprout up in that nonsprayed area. Wagar said that, as of Tuesday, only six property owners have opted out of the spraying program, adding that he thinks most of those are organic farmers who don’t want to risk their organic classification by having the spraying happen adjacent to their fields. The county and its constituent municipalities, however, have had hundreds of calls from residents requesting that the nasty weed be dealt with. Wagar also noted that the county’s cutting equipment wouldn’t allow for cutting of the weed over the entire area of the road allowance. Since wild parsnip is officially deemed a noxious weed, municipalities are obligated to take steps to eliminate it from municipal property. According to the county, spraying will occur from the edge of the gravel shoulder to within about one metre of the property limits. Among those areas that won’t be sprayed, besides those requested property owners, include roadside areas already mowed and maintained as a lawn by property owners and a minimum 10metre buffer from freshwater habitat. If landowners do not want the road allowance in front of their property to be sprayed, they must register their request with the municipality and post ‘no spraying’ signs at the start and finish of their property. Registration forms will be available at the County of Lennox and Addington
offices and will require the landowner to enter into an agreement to manage all noxious weeds on the subject frontage. Wagar said that the spraying program will take place over five years, with
the fifth being a ‘review year’ to determine the spraying’s effectiveness. He said it’s his hope that comprehensive spraying won’t be necessary in the future. “Maybe we’ll get rid of spraying altogether and we
can do some cutting, or maybe we still have to spray, but it’s more isolated, where we send somebody in with a backpack and a sprayer so we’re not getting the entire ditch and rightof-way,” he said.

Visitors urged to go with the flow at Riverfront Fest BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
There’ll be plenty of fun both on land and water during this year’s Riverfront Festival, which runs June 9-10 in and around Napanee’s Conservation Park. Hosted by the Town of Greater Napanee, the festival figures to be the biggest one to date with activities taking part in all corners of the park. “It’s going to start off on the Friday June 9 with the grand opening of the Riverfront Festival and the grand opening of the new (Napanee Rotary Club’s) accessible playground,” said Greater Napanee’s economic co-ordinator Lyndsay Tee. “That’s going to kick off at 5 p.m.” The ribbon will officially be cut on the Rotary Park’s newly constructed playground, which features stateof-the-art equipment and is fully wheelchair accessible. Members of the Napanee’s Lion’s Club will be on hand

2nd lap for Heritage Race Deseronto businesses BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
Napanee’s second annual Heritage Run will take place June 17 with a decidedly patriotic theme to it this year. Inspirational quotes from famous Canadians will line the five kilometre rectangular course. In honour of Canada’s 150th birthday, race organizers will also be awarding prizes to the ‘most Canadian’ outfit. Bagpipers will pipe the racers to the starting line while local musicians Sam and Emma McNichols will provide live entertainment. Just like last year, the race will start at the Lennox and Addington County
Museum and Archives, along Thomas Street to East Street, up to Isabella Street, down John Street and back to Thomas Street and finishing at the museum. The course is designed to take runners past the town’s historical attractions and landmarks. A one-mile race for kids will also be held that day, starting at 8 a.m. with the five kilometre race starting at 8:30 a.m. The youth race is already 60 per cent sold out and is expected to sell out once again. Registration is now open for both races with a $10 entry fee for the kids’ 1-miler and $45 for the 5 K. Runners who register before June 1 are guaranteed a t-shirt with their registration fee.
Online registration can be done by visiting w w w. N a p a n e e H e r i t a g e Race.com. All races are professionally timed with results posted online. Race day volunteers are also needed and can contact organizers at NapaneeHeritageRace@gmail.com to get involved. Proceeds from the race will go towards the cost of resurfacing the track at Napanee District Secondary School, which is used by runners throughout the community. Last year the race generated $15,000, which was given to the Rotary Club of Napanee for their new accessible park, which is scheduled to open early next month.

look to band together
BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
Deseronto’s business owners will have a chance to put their heads together and discuss how to improve the town’s downtown area during a business breakfast on May 29. Held at the Deseronto Community Centre, the meeting will begin with breakfast at 7 a.m. followed by guest speakers Andrew Redden, Hastings County economic development manager, and Karen Fisher, advisor for Ontario East Economic Development. From there the town’s business owners will have the opportunity to speak their mind and do a bit of networking. The breakfast is being hosted by Deseronto council. Mayor Norm Clark is hoping the end result will be the creation of something similar to that of Napanee’s Business Improvement Area. “Council’s not going to
run or direct the businesses,” said Clark. “We’re going to get the businesses together and then it’ll be their own organization. They’ll run their own operation.” Though a member of council may sit on the board, Clark says the goal is to get businesses working together to promote the downtown and perhaps down the road host festival and events and promote the town in an effort to drive traffic to the downtown. Clark says the May 29 breakfast is open to all local business owners or employees they’d like to bring along. That’s not just limited to downtown businesses either, people who operate businesses out of their home are invited as well. “The end result we want is to bring businesses into Deseronto but also to have the business community do things within the community that will help the community,” said Clark. By banding together, he’s
hoping to build a stronger business community that will in turn draw more merchants to the empty stores along the main street. More businesses would mean more traffic which would benefit the current stores as well. Anyone interested in attending the business breakfast is asked to RSVP to admin@deseronto.ca or call 613-396-2440 by 4 p.m. on May 25. The breakfast is expected to run from 7 a.m. to 8:40 a.m. to give owners time to open their shops for the day. Meanwhile Clark says he is reaching out to the community in an effort to build a stronger network of volunteers who would be willing to give a few hours whenever they can to help with festivals and events in Deseronto. The mayor will be at town hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 27 to meet with anyone interested in learning more about volunteer opportunities within the community.

Variety abounds on next House Tour BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
TONE churches older than Canada itself, a log home and a golf museum are just some of the dwellings that will be on the Lennox and Addington Senior Outreach Service’s annual Home and Garden Tour, which takes place June 3. Guests who purchase a $25 passport will be given access to eight unique home and gardens and can take a self-guided tour through the property. Bill Vankoughnet’s Golf Manor Bed and Breakfast, located on Golf Course Lane in Napanee, is among the homes on the tour. His home is jam packed with artifacts from his political career, when he served as MP and later MPP for the area. It also contains plenty of golf memorabilia, Gibbard’s Furniture and antiques he’s acquired from trips around the world. Quitting, or just a break? When interim Conservative Party Leader Rona Ambrose announced this week that she would be quitting politics when MPs broke for the summer — and in time to hand the reins over to a newly-elected party leader — we had to wonder: is this the last we’ll see of Ms. Ambrose? It’s a fair question. After all, there was considerable disappointment when Ambrose opted to take the interim leader’s job post-election; that eliminated her as a candidate for the full-time job (although some within the party unsuccessfully pushed to have the party’s constitution change to allow her to run). Certainly, if we put her up against the other candidates currently vying for that job, she more than cuts the muster. She has ample experience and ability thanks to her time working under Prime Minister Stephen Harper, although her own approach appears to be (thankfully) less abrasive and more conciliatory than her old boss. Her resume wouldn’t be found wanting. Perhaps Ambrose’s resignation is just what it superficially appears to be: that is, a veteran politician stepping away to begin another chapter of her life. According to The Globe and Mail, Ambrose will take a position at the Washington, D.C-based Wilson Institute, where she’ll work on the bilateral trade file with the Canada Centre — not a bad gig. Although she’s relatively young, she’s been at the political game for a while now. When she was first elected in 2004, she was the youngest ever woman to be elected to the House of Commons at the age of 35. Now 48, and with multiple cabinet posts to her credit under the former Conservative government, Ambrose has certainly earned some time away from the political arena. It could be, however, that Ambrose is playing a longer game here. While the opposition parties have managed to chip away at some of the Liberals’ popularity, they’re still polling strongly, despite some missteps. Whoever emerges as the next leader for the Conservative Party, we predict that they’ll have a tough job in knocking the Justin Trudeau-led Liberals off their perch. In fact, the Conservatives might just ‘use up’ a leader before the party is in a position to pose a serious electoral challenge Trudeau and the Grits. That might be what Ambrose is banking on. To be sure, if the Conservatives fail to unseat the Liberals — or if the NDP somehow leapfrog the Tories and the Liberals to form a government of their own — the Conservatives will be looking for a new leader. And you can bet that when the names of possible leadership contenders comes up, Ambrose’s name will be on the list. If it’s not, well, it probably should be.
Letter to the Editor
LASC concerned with spraying The County of Lennox and Addington has made the decision to spray 359 kilometres of rural roadsides with the herbicide ClearView®. Were you aware of this decision? Did you read the small recent announcement in the local papers? Be aware that this is happening. The decision has been made. Public complaints about the rampant spread of this plant have pressured the county to react to this situation. Wild parsnip is a nuisance and the rash it causes, known as phytophotodermatitis, is nasty. But will spraying of rural roadsides effectively control its spread
or are there better methods of control? We, members of the Lennox and Addington Stewardship Council are opposed to the spraying of this herbicide. Education is an important part of our mandate. We would like to provide residents with as much information as possible. Wild parsnip is a tall, biennial, short-lived plant that blooms in the second year of its two-year life cycle, producing seed. It will cause a rash if the stem is broken and the sap from the stem must touch the skin in the sunlight. Wild parsnip reproduces through seed. Cutting
the plant before it flowers is the best method of control. Mowing along roadsides is challenging due to the steep slope of ditches, but is the spraying of an herbicide the best solution? LASC feels strongly it is not. Dr. James Coupland, an agricultural research scientist, feels that the wild parsnip invasion may be short-lived. Invasive plants tend to follow a series of phases. Currently, in L&A we may be experiencing what he refers to as “the rapid growth phase” and the population is exploding.

Seven reasons to keep Yarker school open Here are seven reasons why the Yarker Family School should not close. 1. The bottom line is that senior staff estimate that closing Yarker Family School will save $247,000 — mere peanuts in the Limestone District School Board’s annual budget. To put this amount into perspective, and with great respect for the administrators and all the responsibility they hold, the savings is well below half of the combined annual salaries of the two senior staff who signed the final report ($208,000 plus $172,000 plus benefits and expenses). These figures are public information. so I am not breaching any confidences here. 2. The present school boundaries are working drastically against the Yarker enrolment, and I was shocked when I started investigating this. Four unbelievable examples follow. According to current school boundaries, children who live on County Rd 1 just east of County Rd 6 are less than one kilometre from Yarker school, yet they are bused 10 km to Newburgh P.S. Similarly, students who live 2 km south of Yarker school on Empey Road are bused 11.4 km to Odessa. To the east, children on Wallace Road live 3.6 km from Yarker school but are bused 7.4 km to Harrowsmith PS To the north, students on
McQuay Road live 5.7 km from Yarker school but are bused 11.1 km to Enterprise P.S. The majority of these students have Yarker addresses. It’s no wonder Yarker school isn’t at capacity! If adjusted, I believe the board would realize a large transportation savings, use less gas, produce less harmful emissions, and most importantly, have children riding on buses for less time. 3. The fact is that Yarker students scored at the TOP of all of the board’s 43 elementary schools in the latest Education, Quality and Accountability Office testing results. In reading, writing and math respectively, 100 per cent, 95 per cent and 71 per cent of Yarker students were at or above the provincial standard. No amount of ‘spinning’ the test scores can change that. These Ministry tests are designed to force school boards to provide quality education and to be accountable to the public. Yarker students are obviously getting the top quality of education this board has to offer. 4. The Yarker school building itself is in excellent shape, boasting a threeyear-old kindergarten classroom and a beautiful L&A County Public Library branch attached, built less than 10 years ago. In fact, the board itself ranks Yarker FS at 20 per cent on the Facility Condition Index.
Quoting from the board’s administrative report in this regard, “a school with a low FCI rating needs less repair and renewal than a school with a higher FCI rating.” Only five schools rank lower than Yarker in the board’s report of all 52 schools — amazing! 5. There are several easy ways to fill Yarker Family School, if 100 per cent occupancy is the goal. I feel that the board administration have not thoroughly investigated the recommendations that volunteers on the Pupil Accommodation Review Committee spent countless hours, days and weeks preparing — presumably since the mandate from the beginning has been to close Yarker school. The senior staff final report vaguely addressed the changing of transportation boundaries, but only east and west, not in all four directions, and again vaguely, spoke to adding two grades to YFS, but included a lot of language such as “may, likely, not likely, generally”. As well, a wonderful option that hasn’t been given due consideration is to use a portable or classroom at YFS as an outdoor education field trip destination for other schools, since the Yarker school yard is a mere 10 feet from the Cataraqui Trail. Outdoor learning could abound at this site! 6. The U.S.-based
Amaresco Report is steering the board toward closing all of its smaller schools. The Minister of Education Mitzie Hunter, from her office in Toronto, sees ‘mega schools’ as very neat, tidy and cost-efficient on paper, but the harsh reality is a much different picture — children are falling through the cracks, bullying is rampant and ‘mega’ hours of the $100,000-plus administrative salaries are being spent trying to fix problems. In stark contrast, Yarker school requires minimal administrative attention —the children are getting top quality education and are generally thriving, caring, happy and secure, in their building which ranks sixth in the county for its excellent condition. Who in the world could vote to close this gem, especially for such minimal gain? 7. If the board closes the school that is ranked highest in learning and sixth in low repair/renewal costs, with a 175-year history, it will result in a minuscule financial gain for the board, but will devastate the rich heritage of the Yarker community. Young families will flock to the cities. Young families in Yarker deserve to live a rural lifestyle if they choose, and their children deserve to be educated in their own community. Susanne Varrette, Yarker

A trip through the pages of The Napanee Beaver 65 Years Ago May 14, 1952 ■ Three men believed to be behind a break-in in Tamworth were eventually apprehended by police in Toronto. It was believed that the three men were responsible for breaking into the Haggerty and White store in Tamworth. More than $1,600 in stock was stolen; most of it was recovered. The men were arrested by Toronto Police; one of the store owners was accompanied to Toronto by an OPP constable in order to identify the accused. The men were then transported to the county jail in Napanee for questioning regarding other thefts in the area. ■ Construction on two new public buildings were progressing well. It was expected that the new L&A County Memorial Building, located on Dundas Street at the rear or Harvey Warner Park, would be completed in July. Meanwhile, construction of the new Napanee Collegiate Institute building was also progressing nicely, and was anticipated to be ready to welcome students when they returned to class in September.
35 Years Ago May 19, 1982 ■ A spraying program intended to tackle a gypsy moth infestation in the northern part of Lennox and Addington County appeared to be on hold. Kaladar, Anglesea and Effingham Township council voted to withdraw its support for the Ministry of Natural Resources’ spraying of the pesticide Sevin after becoming aware of potential negative health effects on those living within the spray area. As a result, the MNR elected to put the spraying on hold for the time being. The MNR did so reluctantly, however; the Beaver report indicated that the Minister of Natural Resources, Alan Pope, said he was deeply distressed by the township’s decision, citing the destructive nature of the gypsy moth. ■ The Napanee Kinsmen Club paid tribute to a local man credited with rescuing an 11-year-old boy from drowning in the Napanee River. About a month earlier, a boy was playing near the boat docks near the river when he suddenly fainted and fell into the water. Jody Berry happened to be near where the child had been playing and saw him go into the water, and was able to quickly get him out of the river. The club invited him and his wife to a special dinner, and presented him with a plaque.

Greater Napanee Water Main Flushing Schedule
Greater Napanee Utilities will be flushing water mains and testing fire hydrants throughout the spring and summer season. This work may cause rust coloured water to appear from taps at or near the area of work. If this occurs, remove the aerator from the tap and let the water run for a few minutes, after which it should run clear. Then replace the aerator.
The flushing schedule will be posted in this column throughout the season. WATER MAIN FLUSHING SCHEDULE WEEK

Girls Hawks punch ticket to KASSAA finals Sr. boys lose in semis, Jrs. play QF today BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
N
DSS’ girls rugby team is headed back to the KASSAA finals after blanking the Holy Cross Crusaders 27-0 at home in Monday’s semifinals. The Hawks took control early as Erika Barton carried the ball deep into Crusader territory, unloading to Olivia Fenwick right at the try line for the first score of the game within the opening 10 minutes. Tiana Snow kicked the convert. Fenwick was at it again shortly after, diving just inside the corner of the try line to put the Hawks up 120. The Hawks closed out the first half with a try when Barton scooped up a loose ball that was knocked free from a strong tackle. She took the ball over the line for a 17-0 lead. Hayley Lambert and Jasmina Dennis each added
a try in the second half to close out the scoring. “The goal and the challenge for the later part of the season was to get the defense to a point where we were really difficult to move the ball against,” said Hawks head coach Sean Dunleavy. “I think that we did that today and put (Holy Cross) under pressure with a lot of big tackles and good organization and created a lot of turnovers.” Offensively the Hawks weren’t as sharp as they had been in the regular season, which is something they’ll look to address ahead of this afternoon’s finals. “We were doing a little bit of everybody wants to score mentality,” said Dunleavy. “When we created space and scoring opportunities we didn’t use them. It was one of those funny games where we won 27-0 but you could tell they knew they left some points on the board they probably should Adam Prudhomme-Staff have scored.” NDSS’ Cailyn Barton avoids a tackle during the KASSAA semifinal match As the Hawks were against Holy Cross, played Monday in Napanee. year we were up against a Regi team with a lot of fifth years and a lot of experience and we still played a good, hard final,” said Dunleavy. “We only graduated one from last year so almost all the girls were there last year. They’re excited. We just played La Salle last week so we know it’ll be another battle. Our goal is a KASSAA championship. It’s been a few years since we’ve had our name on our trophy.” The finals get underway today at 2 p.m. at Nixon Field in Kingston on the Queen’s University campus. Prior to Monday’s semifinal game, both the Hawks and Crusaders lined up at midfield and held a moment of silence for NDSS student Garrett Mills, who passed away Friday. The Crusader players then invited the Hawks to join in their pregame prayer circle. “I think today had a different vibe with the passing of Garrett Mills,” said Dunleavy. “There’s girls that knew him and even the ones that didn’t, I think a lot of them felt it.”

It was a nice mixture of veterStrathcona Paper Centre. Those numbers repre- ans.” Hartwick says in meetsent the offensive output by Austin Boulard, the team’s ing with some of the players leading scorer last year. The he’s pleased with the poten-

tial they have to land some impact players. This early in the offseason he has just a basic concept of what his final roster will look like as he waits to see which players are available following the final cuts of some of the area Junior A camps. The Raiders will enter 2017-18 looking to find a way to knock off the threetime league champion Port Hope Panthers. With some of their key veterans moving on, the door’s open for the Raiders to perhaps put an end to their dynasty. “Over the years we’ve played them tough but they’re a great team, obviously when you go to the
(Ontario) finals three years in a row,” said Hartwick. “We still anticipate them being a good team. They are losing some good players but they’ve still got some good ones coming back. It’s good for the league, a good healthy competition. Hopefully we can get them this year.” The Raiders brass will continue to talk with the players from this weekend’s camp throughout the summer and look to host a couple of skates ahead of their main camp which will take place in late August. The season will get started towards the middle of September.

Garrett Harrison Mills passed away suddenly on Friday, May 12, 2017. Garrett was a shining light whose greatest desire was to brighten the lives of those he encountered in his everyday life. His positive attitude towards everything and everyone was an inspiration to the many who knew him. Garrett was born on February 27, 2002 in Winnipeg, MB. His favourite things to do were spending time with family, friends and his dog Roscoe. Garrett loved nature, biking and take afternoon walks along the boardwalk. Garrett was also an avid video gamer, but true to his nature he never played anything violent. Garrett had great aspirations for his future with an interest in becoming a professional photographer. More than that, he expressed many times how he wanted to make a difference in the world. He was a natural peacemaker. He could never understand why people or nations had difficulty in co-existing. He is deeply missed by his father and mother, Dave and Gwen (nee Els) Mills, his brother Landon Mills and his sisters Brooklynne Mills (Jeff Huffman) and Eliyah Mills (Shawn Lapensee) as well as his grandparents June St. Marie and Edward Els, his uncle Matt Mills (Carol Campanola), aun-
Letter From Heaven When tomorrow starts without me, And I'm not here to see. If the sun should rise and find your Eyes filled with tears for me. I wish so much you wouldn't cry The way you did today, While thinking of the many things We didn't get to say. I know how much you love me, As much as I love you, And each time you think of me, I know you'll miss me too. When tomorrow starts without me, Don't think we're far apart. For every time you think of me, I'm right there in your heart.

Our loving mother, Joyce Grace Smith (nĂŠe Plenderleith) passed away at Providence Care Hospital in Kingston, on Thursday, May 4, 2017. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on May 29, 1925, Joyce spent her early years there until, at the age of 18, she enlisted in the WRCNS and was posted to Halifax to begin her naval service. Joyce was stationed at HMCS Cornwallis, where she was a pay writer for overseas sailors. She remained there until the end of the war in 1945. Joyce re-located to Montreal after naval discharge, and there re-connected with Ken Smith, a fellow Winnipegger and navy veteran. Joyce and Ken were married on Oct. 5, 1946, moving to Kingston in 1950 with Alcan Laboratories. It was in Kingston where Joyce and Ken raised their family of six, while developing strong connections in their community. Joyce's dedication to her work as Executive Medical Secretary, Division of Haematology, Queen's University, for over 30 years was of utmost importance to her. Joyce will be remembered by all as a voracious reader, a formidable Scrabble Queen, and shortbread baker par excellence. The local WREN Association, her love of music and her church community of Crossroads (formerly St. Margaret's ) United Church were just a few of the many passions to which she dedicated her energies,

Lennox and Addington County
Denim Day
Event kicks off new season at Dark Sky Viewing Area BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter
A new season of stargazing will get underway May 26 and 27 as well-known night sky photography Joe Gilker returns to the Lennox and Addington Dark Sky Viewing Area for a laser guided tour of the galaxy. Guests are encouraged to bring telescopes, binoculars and cameras as, weather permitting, Gilker will point out Jupiter, the Hercules Cluster and the Beehive Cluster. “Jupiter’s going to be one of our big targets,” said Gilker. “It’s nice and bright this time of the year. It’s every 18 months that we get a good look at Jupiter. It’s nicely visible, nice and high.” Gilker will also speak about two lesser known objects in the night sky, the first being the Hercules Cluster. It’s made up of about 300,000 stars packed
into a space of about 85 light years. “If we look within 50 light years (here on Earth), we have about 100 stars,” said Gilker. “In a little bit larger area, (the Hercules Cluster) there’s 300,000 stars.” As for the Beehive Cluster, Gilker says it’s the closest cluster of its kind to Earth, consisting of a couple hundred stars. While not as tightly packed together as the Hercules, it still produces a colourful sight when viewed through a telescope. The talk will also cover some of the zodiac signs that are in view this time of year, delving a little bit into the mythology surrounding them. Following the guided tour Gilker will stick around to offer some pointers on how to photograph the night sky. He has plenty of experience in the field, as his photos can be found on the popular Dark Arts Photography blog.
The May 26 and 27 presentation will be the start of a summer long series of talks that will highlight the different points of interest that become visible over the next couple of months. It will mark the second season the county has teamed with Gilker for the presentations. Last year was well-received, drawing as many as 120 star gazers for the final talk of the season last September. “People are driving three hours to come spend an hour or two (at the DSVA),” said Gilker. “It’s just mind boggling the distances people will go to come to these demonstrations.” The DSVA is located 37 kilometres north of Napanee near the Sheffield Conservation Area on County Road 41. It is noted for being one of the premier star gazing spots in Ontario, offering pristine views of the night sky unobstructed by light pollution.
