municipal water infrastructure investments. Greater Napanee Mayor Gord Schermerhorn said the additional funding is appreciated, although he noted ongoing infrastructure requirements for the town’s water and sewer system amount to $30 million.

Greater Napanee’s voting system will remain unchanged, leaving residents to vote for just one councillor to represent the ward they live in as well as the mayor and deputymayor. Mayor Gord Schermerhorn was the deciding vote in Tuesday’s meeting, which saw councillors Roger Cole, Mike Schenk and Max Kaiser vote to keep it the same while councillors Shaune Lucas and Carol Harvey voted to do away with the ward system, as did deputy mayor Marg Isbester. The vote followed over a year’s worth of discussion, which saw two public meetings and a handful of deputations on the matter with citizens voicing support for both sides of the issue. Before casting the tiebreaking vote in a recorded vote, Schermerhorn voiced displeasure that his third option of shrinking to three wards didn’t receive any support.

FireRein ignites interest with firefighting eco-gel BY SETH DUCHENE Editor

For Napanee-based FireRein Inc., the buzz about their fire-extinguishing ‘eco-gel’ is spreading like, well, wildfire. At this point, say some of the people behind the company, the hard part is capitalizing on that buzz, and keeping up with demand. “We’re now trying to fulfill our preliminary sales, which are a lot bigger than we projected. It’s still

not to the point where we’re all going to buy company Lincolns, but certainly to a point which is much further advanced than we anticipated,” says Rui Resendes, the company’s CEO. At the core of the company’s growth is the development and marketing of an additive that, when injected into the stream of water used to knock down a fire, can significantly reduce the amount of time and water needed to extinguish a fire. What makes the additive unique is that all the ingre-

dients used are food grade and completely environmentally friendly — unlike virtually every other firefighting gel currently on the market. Much of the last year has been spent getting certification of the gel’s ‘green’ attributes. “We received our 100 per cent bio-based certification from UL Environment, as well as the U.S. Department of Agriculture,” says Quincy Emmons, Fire Rein’s Chief Brand Officer. “We’re part of their bio-preferred program; we’re the

first firefighting water additive to get this certification.” One of the challenges faced by the company has been that gels, in general, have gotten a bad rap over the years. “Gels have been the firefighting water additive that people would love to love, because of all the virtues they bring: it sticks to walls, it sticks to ceilings, it suppresses fire and it prevents it from reigniting. But because of all the problems… about cleanup and plugging (of lines and pumps) and site remediation afterwards, toxicity in some of the chemicals that comprise those gels, people have shied away from them,” said Resendes. “As the new kid on the block, saying ‘we’ve got a gel’, the first reaction (from potential customers) is, ‘here we go again, another gel’,” he adds. “There’s a bit of a hurdle there to get their attention, walk them through why we’re completely different. Our hit rate, given that opportunity to pitch it, it’s probably up to 90 per cent. People are responding. The differences are compelling enough that… once people see it and touch it and taste it, we start to make significant

traction.” And when he says ‘taste it’, he’s not joking. “This is food-grade material. I guarantee you that over the last week, you have eaten every single one of our ingredients in our gel. Guaranteed,” says Resendes. Besides developing the gel itself, the company has also been working of various methods by which the gel can be added to a water stream. Depending on the type of fire being fought, the gel is added to about one to five per cent of the overall water being used. According to Emmons, testing has shown that, for a typical fire, the gel reduces the amount of water used by about 60 per cent; it also takes about half the time to knock down a fire than using water alone. “We’re putting together a training program, because gels are different, and there are different tactics involved,” Emmons adds. “The better the tactics, the more efficient the firefighters can be (using) the product.” The company has been busy on the trade show circuit, and now has distributors in place in northern Ontario, BC, Alberta,

Atlantic Canada and Europe. The company is close to similar distribution deals in the United States. The first fire department with the gel ‘on board’ is Stone Mills, where Emmons is a volunteer firefighter. As of last Thursday, the fire department hasn’t had the opportunity to use the gel in the field. The other challenge, said Resendes, has been coming up with the capital to get the product to market. “When you get to the point where you’re ready to not only enter the market but start developing a presence in that marketplace, it takes a lot of (resources) to do that,” he says. “There is a lot of travel, there is a lot of up-front expenses and a lot of working capital needed. We were able to close on a really successful round, first tranche of financing, and we’re just in the midst of a second tranche of financing which will close at the end of June.” It’s all moving faster than expected, he adds. “We had no immediate plans to do another tranche this soon, but with the frenzy of interest and activity, we just had to bring more resources on board,” he said.

Colourful approach to Indigenous understanding BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

Students at NDSS are learning Indigenous history in a non-traditional way, trading in textbooks for paint brushes. Working with Indigenous artists, the students are creating a medicine wheel mural that will hang in the school’s library. The project is part of a program known as ‘Reconciliaction’, which teaches students about the injustices suffered by Canada’s Indigenous population while encouraging them to help move forward and create a better understanding of their culture. It’s also a tribute to the Hauendosaunne and Anishinaabe land on which the school was built. “This project is about the artists working with students and the youth voice, youth action and youth involvement,” said Karen Randall, History and Indigenous Studies teacher at NDSS. “The youth are going to be the ones that are truly involved in reconciliation.” Each of the artists will visit the school for a couple of days and work with the students on a specific section of the mural, incorporating their culture’s folklore into the painting. The artists include Maureen Walton, who has painted several murals for the Quinte Mohawks, Maurice Blanchard, a Metis and Ojibwe

artist, Kirk Brant, a Mohawk artist and Jay Odjick, an Algonquin graphic artist. Odjick, who illustrated Robert Munsch’s book Blackflies, will join the class via Skype to discuss ideas for one particular section of the mural. The four sections of the mural will represent the north, west, east and south and relate to the significance those ‘doors’ hold in traditional teachings. The artwork will reflect the themes of the directions, from water, youth and elder wisdom. “It’s a cool experience,” said Seth Lee, one of the students working on the project. “It’s a great way to learn and it’s cool to see their beliefs.” Lee says speaking with the artists directly has been eye-opening, allowing students to learn first hand about what the symbols mean in their culture. It’s also a chance to contribute to a lasting legacy at the school as the art work will be on display in the library. “There’s going to be a plaque with our names on it, so it’ll be cool to have that,” added Lee. Funding for the project came through a grant from the Limestone District Learning Foundation. Randall is hopeful that they will be successful in obtaining a few more grants to help fully cover the cost. Randall says the project has been in the works for about two years now following the results of a survey that was taken among

With the 300th anniversary of organized Masonry right around the corner, Napaneearea Masonic members plan on marking the occasion with an open house at their Bridge Street location next weekend. On June 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., members of Union Lodge No. 9, Prince of Wales Lodge No. 146 (formerly of Newburgh) and Victoria No. 299 (formerly of Centreville), along with Mount Sinai Chapter No. 44, will be on hand to give members of the public a tour of their lodge room. The event is free, and refreshments will be provided. The open house will also give the public an opportunity to get a peek into an organization that’s become famous for its secretive nature. The Grand Lodge for Ontario in Toronto has urged its lodges and chapters to mark the 300th anniversary of the first meeting of the Grand Lodge of England in 1717. The lodge is always accepting new members, although it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t actively seek them out. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is a fundamental principle in Freemasonry: you do not ask people to join,â&#x20AC;? said Farber. â&#x20AC;&#x153;(Prospective members) ask you. If they inquire, you can certainly tell them whatever it is. I get phone calls on a fairly regular basis from people who always wanted to be a Mason, and what they have to do. Once they ask you, sure,

but we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have recruiting drives.â&#x20AC;? Members are also called on to abide by certain conduct. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re expected to have certain moral standards. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re expected to live and act in a way that throws a good light on the fraternity as well as the people who are members,â&#x20AC;? said Farber. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When we are in lodge, we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t discuss religion and politics. Those are two things that are not discussed here,â&#x20AC;? adds Peters. As part of the June 3 event, there will also be free admission to the Museum of Fraternal Lodges, which is located in the bottom floor of the same building that houses the lodge. There you can find not only the story of the Masonic Order, but also of groups like the Orange Lodge, the Knights of Columbus and the Order of the Eastern Star. Picturing Our Community

Sticking with the status quo Despite much debate and hand-wringing over the past several months, Greater Napanee council ultimately opted to keep the status quo with regard to the municipality’s electoral system: the ward system stays, and at-large voting will have to wait, at least for now. That’s the direction in which we thought this process should unfold. But while there are those who are firmly entrenched on one side of the question or the other, we can appreciate the arguments from either standpoint. The most compelling argument behind the changing the system is the fact that, with at-large voting, all council members are accountable to all residents. Therefore, councillors will make decisions ‘with the best interests of the entire municipality at heart’, or so the argument goes. There’s something to said for this approach — and if council had ultimately opted to go in this direction, we don’t think how council functions would be dramatically worse than it is now. We just don’t think the potential advantages outweigh messing around with the current system. A common slam against the ward system today is that it foments disunity and disharmony. While we understand the need to ‘come together as a municipality’, and agree that the ‘urban-rural divide’ has been an unproductive element at times, council chambers should be a place where competing interests and perspectives come to the fore. It’s important to remember, too, that while some decisions do divide along urban-rural lines, the majority of council votes do not. The current council structure is well-balanced. Councillors have their distinct geographic areas to represent, and those areas are of roughly equal population size. Practically speaking, we think there are advantages to councillors having specific areas to represent — those living within those wards know who to call when they’ve got a problem, and their representative knows their ward’s issues intimately, since they don’t have to spread themselves thinly over the entire municipality. With the current system, councillors are responsible for addressing the concerns and interests of their respective wards. The interests of those wards are balanced against the other wards. The ‘big picture’ is captured by the mayor and deputy-mayor positions, who are elected at-large. As we said, the current system strikes a good balance — at the very least, certainly not so out-of-whack that it necessitates immediate wholesale change. In the end, the electoral system wasn’t a big issue (or an issue at all) during the last municipal election. While this council certainly had the power to change it, we don’t think it had a strong mandate to do so. Sure, there was a consultation process leading up to Tuesday night’s vote, but heading into this term, there was no real indication that changing the electoral system was in the cards. If prospective council candidates want to advocate for the abandoning of the ward system in the upcoming municipal election campaign, they’re obviously welcome to do so, with council seats on the line. Any change to the electoral system that comes after won’t come out of the blue. That said, we’re not sure if there will be an appetite to revisit the issue so soon after this now-concluded debate. We’ll have to see. In the meantime, we don’t have a problem with council standing pat.

MP urged to back push for electoral reform With the upcoming vote on electoral reform, we have a prime minister that politicked on electoral reform, after the Liberal win, Justin Trudeau stated “2015 will be the last year using ‘first past the post’”. The Liberal party implemented a committee based on all parties, held consultations across Canada and even put up a survey questionnaire on line. All of which were smoke screens to push the ball down the road until it would become too late to implement before the next election. Reports from town halls held by Liberals all were reported to overwhelmingly support proportional representation, the online survey

also pointed to this. Given the online survey did not even ask the simple question on what type of election based system they favoured. Seems that Justin Trudeau’s idea of reform is what favours the Liberals or nothing at all. Is Justin all about the power control, getting dictator like powers over all of Canada with less then 40 per cent of the people's support? When the Green party gets more than 680,000 votes and receives one representative in Parliament and one Liberal MP needed just over 22,000 votes, seems that many voices are not being heard, listened to or taken into account. This then is not democracy, it is a

poor excuse of a dictatorship that favours the incumbent party in power, it limits the voices of Canadians, and reality is Canada is one of the last remaining countries to use FPTP as an election system. Justin promised change in government, change in how we have done things in the past, change in accountability, yet we have nothing like this. I call on our representative Mike Bossio to stand up and be counted for election reform, and to stand up and have our voices heard for a change instead of toeing the party line. Are you our representative or are you a Liberal hand-raiser for whatever you are told to raise your

hand for? You, Mike, were given the opportunity to make a difference, to have a voice, I implore you to do so in the vote on this issue next week, show us you are our representative and not an MP who does what the party chooses. All Canadians know this is about control, and not about given voice to the people. Support election reform Mike, bring Canadians real democracy. Show us you believe in fair representation and not power control at all costs. Show us you are our representative and not a Liberal hack looking for the payday. Peter McGrath, Greater Napanee

Give credit to the birds Birds only have small brains but as I’ve watched them at our feeder, I’ve concluded they are brilliant. You too in just five minutes of watching may decide that each bird has all the smarts it needs and more. Just a little bird brain but incredible intelligence! The other morning after putting out bird seed, I was delighted to see a whitecrowned sparrow. They came as a pair and yet were jittery about eating together. Perhaps the female was smart to let the male feed first for he is the protector of his mate and nest. Often I’ve seen a small bird chasing a black crow across the sky. The little fellow possessed all the brains needed to put the run on a crow. Small and feisty, it had all the smarts it required. Then a tree sparrow, showing its red-crested head, flew in to feed and both kinds

of sparrows got along fine. But they sensed danger and flew off when an iridescent grackle and a red-winged blackbird dropped by. The pair got along fine till a dove flew in; the black ones were smart — they flew off. They knew the dove is often not like its name suggests; it can be aggressive. Birds have just a little brain but it is enough to fly with incredible skill. One bird that flew by in a blur headed for our big spruce tree. My reaction was to say, “Slow down or you’ll be pulling your beak out of the trunk. Or you’ll lose all your feathers scraped off by those sharp bristles.” But the bird put on its air brakes and settled on a branch like a piece of thistle down. Wow, such skill! Later another bird with a touch of white must have thought it was a jet plane for it came by so close and so fast

A few months ago, many different types of sparrows along with a house finch or two would feed together just a few meters from our patio door. As I went across the road to get our morning paper, a grackle flew in low and fast as it put the run on a red squirrel. The red tail was straight up as it scrambled then jumped into the high grass. So if that bird was so smart, why would it chase the red squirrel and not keep projecting its own nest? Just this! It knows the red squirrel is a predator of all birds’ nests and as well, with a few bites it enlarges the opening of bird houses to eat the eggs or young of song birds. I say that grackle was smart for protecting all species of birds. I’ve changed my mind about what it means to be called a bird brain. When I consider the ways of birds at my feeder I must say sometimes they exceed the smarts of our human race. To be called a bird brain is not such a bad thing after all. Roy C. A trip through the pages of The Napanee Beaver 65 Years Ago May 21, 1952 ■ A 15-year-old boy from Sillsville was in serious condition from an accidently self-inflicted gunshot wound to the abdomen. The boy and a friend had been hunting birds with a .22 calibre rifle near Hay Bay. The pair brought a bird down, only to find that it was still alive. When the boy attempted to kill the wounded bird with the butt of his rifle, the rifle discharged, wounding the boy. The bullet passed through his stomach and lodged in his leg. The boy walked several hundred metres to a nearby house; the homeowner took him for first aid in Bath then on to Kingston General Hospital. ■ Supporters of a new recreation facility and arena had a name picked out for their new building — now, the next job was to select a place to put it. Three sites were being considered for the new Napanee Memorial Community Centre. One of the proposed locations was directly across from the Napanee Collegiate Institute on Belleville Road. The final decision on where the new community centre would be located rested with Napanee council.

35 Years Ago May 26, 1982 ■ A local businessman turned down the opportunity to get funding from a provincial economic development program, declaring it to be ‘hogwash’ and window-dressing in advance of the next provincial election. The unnamed industrialist met with government representatives, accompanied by a Beaver reporter and his accountant, to determine whether or not to take part in the Eastern Ontario Development Corporation program. The provincial government had earmarked $50 million as a boost to the flagging eastern Ontario economy. At that point, however, only one company in Lennox and Addington was taking part in the program. ■ After hearing that the Ministry of Natural Resources had — contrary to recent reports — decided to proceed with the spraying of a pesticide over northern L&A forests, local residents opted to picket the airfield to be used for the spraying. The MNR was conducting the spray to combat a gypsy moth infestation. Many local residents, as well as the Kaladar, Anglesea and Effingham Township council, were concerned about potential health effects related to Sevin, the chemical being used in the spraying.

‘Yodelling cowgirl’ headlines Bath Lions country show BY ADAM PRUDHOMME Staff Reporter

Naomi Bristow, also known as the ‘yodelling cowgirl’, will bring her act Bath’s St. John’s Hall June 3. Tickets for the show, which will get started at 1 p.m., are $15 each. Proceeds will go to the Bath’s Lion’s Club, which they plan to use to purchase a park bench in the village. A fan favourite during her previous visit to Bath, Bristow is known for incorporating her yodelling skills into her old time traditional country style. She has been featured on Canada’s Got Talent, earned the Havelock Fans Choice Award and was named BC Cowboy Heritage Rising Star. She is also a two-time Youth Yodeller of the Year. Tickets for her show are available at Marie’s Place in Napanee, Doug’s Barber and Schell’s Market in Bath, Home Hardware in Odessa and TCO Agromart in Selby. Tickets will also be available at the door the day of the show.

Back in the days of the National Hockey League’s ‘Original 6’, there were three Conacher brothers — Lionel, Charlie, and Roy — all of whom were elected to the Hall of Fame. Roy, who was the smallest of the three, once said that he had no intention of playing the game past bantam (ages 1314). He could rightly be classed as a reluctant all-

star. Much the same was true of the composer of today’s Musical Memories song. Herb Brown was born in New Mexico into a musicoriented family. His mother played the piano, his father the clarinet and his sister the cello. From age five, he learned the violin. As a family they often put on their own private concerts.

WARDS | Mayor breaks council tie CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 “I know on my left hand side they wanted wards,” Schermerhorn said, gesturing to one side of the council chambers. “On my right hand side they want to get rid of wards. It was a compromise to have three wards, a mayor, a deputy mayor, a north, a south and a central. We’re only 15,000 population. We’re very small. We do not need a seven member council in my view. This is why I brought it up but I guess no one wants to run with it. At the end of the day I’m not running in the next election but I think it’s the best thing for the municipality.” Schenk put forward the successful motion to keep the ward system in place, which the town has utilized since amalgamation in 1998 — although ward boundaries have be adjusted since that time. Although council did at one point debate putting a question about the matter on the next election ballot and letting the voters decide, they ultimately went ahead and

made the choice on their own after two ‘open mi’c town hall meetings. Had they gone that route, they’d have needed 50 per cent of the voting population to respond to the question. “We all agree that’s not likely,” said Kaiser. “When we look at the apathy that was demonstrated at the public meetings, with only 41 verbal expressions and less than 100 (people) turn out at two public meetings, it’s even less likely that we’d get a significant turnout at the polls. But even then, the turnout we did have at the meetings, of the opinions expressed by the less than 100 individuals, and I did count, they were about 50/50.” Harvey disagreed. “I think a lot of people would like to vote for councillors in Greater Napanee,” said Harvey. “If people have no one running against them, like in 2010 in my ward, they had no vote for councillors. That happens a lot.” “The fundamental belief I have on the issue is that the citizens in this community should have the right and

privilege to vote for all second people who spend their tax money and people who make policy,” added Lucas. “I believe the best thing is for candidates to campaign the whole area,” said Isbester. “I do believe past councils and in present have had a hard time getting around what urban and rural needs are. Those words are always going to be there.” Cole felt at large voting was unnecessary because all councillors should already want what’s best for the entire area. “I’m getting really damn sick and tired of people telling me I don’t represent the whole of Greater Napanee,” said Cole. “I’m so fed up with that. When I vote for anything with regards to the municipality it is for the town of Greater Napanee.” Tuesday’s vote means the 2018 election will resemble that of 2014s. Council did have the option of using ranked ballots and dissolving the ward system heading into 2018 but has now opted to keep the status quo on both issues.

We need the funding to help us grow, so we certainly welcome any funding. We appreciate today’s announcement, and I know that Mike is working very hard with the feds and the province to get us more funding. We thank him for that,” he said. Bossio said that Wednesday’s announcement was

part of the first phase of federal infrastructure investment. He said the Phase 1 funding was aimed at smaller scale initiatives that can be completed in the shorter term, whereas the Phase 2 funding will be directed to more longer-term projects. He said the federal government is currently negotiating with the province regarding how that program will roll out. “I’m working right now with the federal government, the minister and the province to ensure that we get funding for projects like the one here in Napanee… There are a number of large projects that I’m

trying to get done here in the riding,” Bossio said. Like Schermerhorn, Bossio says this kind of funding is essential for Greater Napanee and the other smaller communities he represents in his riding. “Without these projects… how do we continue to grow? How do we continue to build homes, build industry and attract businesses to our community if we don’t have the infrastructure to support it? It’s imperative to long-term sustainability for rural communities that we get these expansion projects, and we get them going as quickly as possible.”

OFA Student Bursaries The Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) is offering three bursaries in the amount of $2,000 per recipient. The bursaries are available for students of OFA families who are entering or currently pursuing a post-secondary education in an agriculture-related program. The bursaries will be awarded regionally, including one recipient from each region across Ontario (Northern, Eastern and South-Western). Golden Hawks outlast La Salle in overtime, win KASSAA rugby title NDSS wins on penalty kicks

wice the NDSS Golden Hawks girls rugby team were down a try with no time left on the clock in Thursday’s KASSAA finals against La Salle at Queen’s Nixon Field, and twice they found a way to get the ball over the try line on their final play, pulling out all the stops in their 1615 overtime victory. Those miraculous comebacks, once to close out regulation time and the other on the final second of overtime, meant the game would be decided by kicks. Each team selected three kickers, with each one kicking from wide left of the goal post, centre and wide right. For his kickers NDSS coach Sean Dunleavy went with Tiana Snow, who had taken the majority of convert attempts for the team all season, along with Erika

overtime, the Hawks actually jumped out to the early lead as Megan McKee put the Hawks up 5-0 in the opening 10 minutes. That lead held late into the half as NDSS’ defense stood tall but finally relented a try on the final play of the half as La Salle knotted it at 5-5. The Black Knights went up 10-5 late in the second half, giving the Hawks just under two minutes to respond or finish the year as KASSAA runner-ups for a second straight year. The importance of the goal from the Napanee native couldn’t be downplayed, however, as his Cougars would go on to top

Alberta’s Brooks Bandits 32 in overtime to capture Canada’s top Junior A hockey prize. “The only thing I remember is I had my head down and somehow my stick hit the puck,” said Casselman. “I as in the right spot at the right time luckily. I just remember celebrating, it was almost like a black out. I still get chills from it, it was a really exciting moment.” The 19-year-old NDSS alumni says the goal was easily the biggest of his hockey career. Of course his dramatic goal would mean little if his team wasn’t able to finish the job in overtime. He was on the ice when teammate

Though he didn't get an assist, his distraction may have been just enough to help the puck reach the twine. “I was just driving to the net and the puck went in right in front of me and it hit the back of the net,” Casselman said of the game winner. “It was an indescribable feeling. It was the best thing that ever happened to me.” For the Cougars the win was a bit of redemption after they had been ousted from the Ontario Junior Hockey League playoffs a month before, losing to the Trenton Golden Hawks. Fortunately for the Cougars

they had an automatic entry into the RBC Cup as the host team. That left them with four weeks to prepare while the other teams continued to battle for their right to fill out the bracket. “We were really injured that series,” Casselman said of the loss to Trenton. “We were able to heal up and just prepare and work hard. The other teams were in more game shape, but by the end of the tournament we were the most well rested and that was definitely a benefit. The home crowd in the finals being sold out, that really got us excited. It definitely helped for sure.”

RBC CUP | Former Raider CONTINUED FROM PAGE 23 Just an hour from his hometown, Casselman was able to have plenty of friends and family in attendance. Even his little brother, who Casselman says hates hockey, turned out to show some support. This year was Casselman’s third at the Junior A level, finishing with 31 goals and 42 assists in 53 games. He spent his first year and a half in Junior A playing for the Pembroke Lumber Kings, coming over to the Cougars midway through last season. In 2013-14 he played locally, suiting up for the Napanee Raiders and scoring 24

goals and adding 23 assists in his lone season at Junior C. Prior to that he skated for the Quinte Red Devils. An RBC championship now on his resume, he has thoughts of perhaps staying closer to home while he focuses on his studies at St. Lawrence College. “I’m just enjoying the next couple of weeks and then me and my family are going to talk about it,” Casselman says of his plans for next season. “There’s maybe a chance I’ll come back to the Raiders and play my last two years, but it’s just something to talk about.” If that comes to fruition, he’d be a huge addition to the local Junior C club.

“There’s no tension, no frantic play and I think that showed. (La Salle) would come down and score on them and they’d just circle up and say ‘ok, let’s go get our own,’” Once again in overtime the Black Knights took an early lead and put the Hawks in another pressure packed situation. The Hawks began their urgent yet organized march back up the field, finally breaking through when Barton took advantage of a penalty called just 10 feet outside the try line, dodging her way through traffic and diving just inside the line as the referee blew the whistle. “I didn’t even know it was the last play,” recalled Barton. “I just picked it and

tried to score as many points as I could get.” Dunleavy credited his three co-captains, Barton, Lambert and Charlotte Elliott for helping to maintain a sense of calm and collectiveness in the do-or-die final seconds. “One of our main focuses is never getting down,” added Elliott. “We always try to build each other up so we can push through and get the ball back across the goal line.” “Sean always tells us to do what we know to do,” added Lambert. “Play the way you practice. Working it wide was key in playing La Salle.” Having just played La Salle to a 5-5 tie late in the regular season, Lambert says they knew heading into the finals what kind of

match to expect. For the Hawks the win was their first rugby KASSAA title since 2012 and first for this group. “Going into the finals we knew exactly what we were going to be up against,” said Lambert. “We knew how tight of a game it was going to be. Last year (in the finals) there was more of a gap in the playing ability between the two teams but this year with La Salle we were neck and neck the whole time.” For the graduating players in Barton, Snow, McKee, Zoye Lloyd and Ashley Couvreur, the win was especially meaningful, having spent four or five years with the team. Following Thursday’s KASSAA win the Hawks travelled to Ottawa to take

part in EOSSAA, with a trip to OFSAA on the line. Unfortunately for the Hawks the script was flipped and this time they lost in extra kicks to Arnprior to end their season. Elsewhere NDSS’ junior boys rugby team had their season end at Frontenac, losing 17-10 in the KASSAA quarter-finals. The Hawks finished the year 1-3-1, fifth in the league. NDSS’ baseball season finally got underway, with the Hawks opening the year with an 8-6 victory over Regi. They play LaSalle tomorrow at Megaffin. The start of the season was delayed by about two weeks due to weather. On Thursday the Hawks took part in a pre-season tournament, losing one game and tying the other.

The children of Tom W. Pearce, Alison (George) Shorey, Elspeth Pearce, Gillian (Brad) Charrois, Helen (Rene) Gentinetta and Wilson (Kathy) Pearce would like to thank the staff at Kingston General Hospital and Lennox and Addington General Hospital for the care shown to our dad over the past 14 months. On May 15, 2017, after a long and difficult struggle with heart disease, our dad passed away peacefully in the ICU at Kingston General Hospital. We are extremely saddened at the loss of our dad, but grateful that he is now at peace and no longer subjected to the pain and heartache life can sometimes throw at us. We love you dearly dad, as we always have and we always will. Dad’s children and their spouses, his 11 grandchildren and his 5 greatgrandchildren, along with extended family and friends from across Canada and Europe, will be holding a celebration of life in his honour later this summer. We will celebrate the wonderful man we knew growing up who, together with our incredible Mum Nancy Pearce, helped us to grow into the strong, devoted family we are today. Rest in Peace Dad.

Having lived a full and excellent life, Ruth passed away on Tuesday May 16th, 2017 at Providence Care Hospital with her devoted son George Jr. at her bedside. After a hard-fought battle and as with everything Ruth approached in life, she passed away with dignity and grace. Ruth was born in Tyendinaga Township (Deseronto) in 1927. She is predeceased by her beloved husband George Sr. who passed away November 3, 2013, after 68 years of marriage. Also predeceased by her parents Frank Toppings and Gertrude (Vandewater), brother Glenn and daughter Ruth at birth. Ruth leaves her son George and daughter-in-law Susan who looked after both George Sr.’s and Ruth’s needs and whom Ruth referred to as their Angels of Mercy. Ruth also leaves a number of grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Thank you to granddaughter Vanessa and greatgrandson Aidan who spent many hours at “Grandma Ruth’s” bedside and provided much comfort and care to her in her time of need. Ruth attended Lakeshore Teacher’s College in Toronto and

Sir Wilfred Laurier University in Waterloo where she received her B.A. before going on to teach school at Laskey (York County) and Brampton, Ontario for over 28 years. Ruth was a member of the Rebecca Lodge at the I.O.O.F. in Napanee. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Kingston General Hospital, M.S.S.U. on Kidd 10 and those on Connell 10 for their excellent care of Ruth while there. Also a special thank you to Dr. Fisher and the Nursing Team at Providence Care Hospital for their compassionate and gentle care of Ruth during her last days. In keeping with Ruth’s wishes, Cremation has taken place and handled by Simpler Times of Kingston. A private memorial service for family and interment at Deseronto Cemetery is planned for a later date. The family would like to thank all those who visited Ruth over the weeks she was hospitalized. Also, thank you to friend and neighbour Tyson who shared a love of music and theology with Ruth and was able to attend the hospital and sing a favourite Italian prayer for her. He was a fine musician who could play any instrument, especially his banjo, guitars and mandolin and enjoyed hours of entertaining at different venues over the years. Lorne was a lover of parrots from an early age. In his later life he finished his degree at Queen's University after serving over 30 years with SLH Transport. He spent winter months in Key Largo on his boat with his Florida friends.
