first met Vintner Jean-Charles Boisset in 2009 at Auction Napa Valley and we hit it off immediately. His charismatic charm was engulfing and he appeared to be the new vintner in the Valley. So, I thought. Since that time, I’ve had the opportunity to interview JeanCharles on several occasions and we became friends. I had always thought Raymond Vineyards was one of his first properties he was affiliated with in California as he extended beyond his wine business in France. He currently has a dozen properties now in his Boisset Collection portfolio in California as he has diversified beyond just wine. One of his latest is the iconic historical Oakville Grocery Store in the heart of Napa Valley. During my interview, I learned that Jean-Charles has been visiting the Napa Valley from France since he was 11-years old. The Victorian adjacent to the store is similar to the one he grew up in. I always thought Jean-Charles was new to the valley when in fact Napa Valley has always been part of his life. His passion for Napa and Sonoma Valley continues to grow. His wealth of historical knowledge is beyond belief and he wants Californians to be proud of their history. Not only does he want to preserve the historical integrity of the Oakville Grocery Store, he is turning the 1871 Victorian into a wine museum showcasing all 16 Napa Valley sub-American Viticultural Areas. We welcome Jean-Charles and his wife, Gina Gallo and two daughters to the cover of Napa Valley life. For the past ten-years, Napa Valley Life has been a sponsor of the fund raiser for Music in the Vineyards. This year, they changed their focus from Kitchen in the Vineyards to the Garden in the Vineyards. See page 72 for the preview of the self-guided tour happening May 17. Spring brings big events to the Napa Valley including the month-long celebration of Arts in April. BottleRock Napa Valley returns Memorial Day Weekend. The 39th Auction Napa Valley, one of the country’s largest wine auction attracts wine enthusiasts from around the world. Look inside for a preview of all these events. Cheers,

Premiere Napa Valley, held at the Culinary Institute of America raised $3.7 million for the Napa Valley Vintners (NVV). Premiere Napa Valley wines are unique selections crafted by NVV member winemakers for just one moment in time, never to be replicated, in quantities as small as 60 bottles and never more than 240. Upon release, each bottle is hand-numbered and signed by the winemaker, increasing the allure of these wines for top collectors. Proceeds from Premiere Napa Valley go to fund the NVV’s three main objectives: Napa Green program, Napa Valley name protection and lobbying for winery rights as well as marketing and education of the Napa Valley wine industry on a global scale and community giving and fundraising. Several winery open houses and signature events were held leading up to the Saturday Live Auction. www.napavintners.com

T

he Napa Valley Vintners (NVV), who puts on Auction Napa Valley, will be celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2019. To mark this significant milestone, 30 past board of director chairs who have provided leadership and support over the decades are coming together to serve as the honorary co-chairs of Auction Napa Valley. This group of dedicated vintners has been working to plan refinements and changes that will position Auction Napa Valley for continued future success. Like the NVV, the historic Louis M. Martini Winery has also been looking forward, investing significantly in restoring the original winery and building a world-class visitor experience. The Friday Barrel Auction, the first major event of Auction Napa Valley, will be held at the newly restored Louis M. Martini Winery. As one of the seven founding members of the NVV in 1944, Louis M. Martini served as the first Chairman of the Board and played a significant role in shaping the NVV’s history and establishing Napa Valley’s reputation as a worldrenowned winegrowing region. The Martini family was also deeply involved with another NVV milestone as Louis P. Martini was the Chair of the first Auction Napa Valley in 1981. Louis M. Martini passed the responsibility of crafting complex, varietal expressive Cabernet Sauvignon to his son, Louis P. Martini, in 1954. DRIVE YOURSELF with this Self Tour Wine App  BY EVE BUSHMAN

It is like driving the famous wine valleys of Napa and Sonoma with a sommelier, three expert tour guides, and a small jazz band – all in your own back seat!

R

on Miziker created his line of SelfTour™ driving and walking tour Apps after being disappointed with many tours he had taken around the world with live guides and using other apps. He also wanted to utilize his wealth of experience in the entertainment industry. During Miziker’s 20 years as a Disney Creative Director and Producer and years with his own entertainment company he was fortunate to travel the world extensively. His shows ranged from network television primetime music specials with headliner performers to worldclass events including four Super Bowl Halftime spectaculars, two Olympics, a World Cup and other sport event Opening Ceremonies, Presidential Inaugurations, long-running show attractions at Disneyland, Disney World, Tokyo Disneyland, Universal Studios and major casinos plus 26

celebrations for leading corporations, Queen Elizabeth and the Sultan of Oman. It’s estimated that over 2 billion people have seen Miziker’s shows.

“ I wanted to bring my skills as a storyteller and showman to creating not just tours, but experiences.” “The Napa and Sonoma valleys are a challenge for tourists, particularly first-timers, because of the size of the area and private tours can be very expensive. The Napa and Sonoma Driving App uses uniquely innovative technology to solve both challenges.”

It not only uses GPS and turnby-turn spoken directions to lead the user along the route, but the App also automatically activates the tour’s narration, while music and audio effects play at each appropriate location. The driver doesn’t have to do anything except drive. And the cost of the tour App is about the same as one glass of wine. Users can start the tour at any of its locations, stop anytime to explore and continue at one’s own pace. Dramatic music and sounds accompany the voiceactors’ narrations enhancing the listening experience. For example, as you drive along the historic plaza in Sonoma, sounds of battle help the narrators recreate the tense atmosphere of the Bear Flag Revolt. A sommelier blends Jazz music with talks about appellations, varietals, and the uniqueness of wine grape growing. Tales of the area’s colorful earliest

winemakers are dramatically told. Delightful back roads are beautifully explored. Miziker added, “Everyone in the car listens and enjoys for the same single price. The area’s fascinating history, famous wineries, legendary characters and scenic spots are all experienced on this one-of-a-kind tour.” FOR MORE INFORMATION

One of the many pleasures the Napa Valley has to offer is the experience of settling into the area for a few days in an intimate hotel or romantic Bed & Breakfast. These smaller boutique accommodations offer some distinct advantages for those who want to enjoy a more personalized stay. To have a warm, welcoming base of operations from which to range and explore, a comfy B&B tucked away on a backstreet or hidden along a country lane can be a real luxury, a respite from one’s daily routines or the well-travelled wine trails. Luckily, the Napa Valley has a number of these places, each one unique and with a level of refined hospitality that would qualify them for any list of the best boutique hotels or B&Bs in the country.

W

hen you show up at the Arbor Guest House Bed and Breakfast in central Napa, you’re also stepping into a little piece of local history. In 1887, the William Rumble family, with wife Sarah and daughter Jessie, who were originally from Michigan, bought the land the Arbor Guest House now occupies and finished building their home there in 1905. As early members of the Salvation Army, the Rumbles did a lot of charitable work with the less fortunate in the community and offered food to those who showed up at their door. Today the Arbor Guest House continues in that spirit of welcoming hospitality. It’s an example of an impeccably maintained historical home that also offers all the luxuries and modern amenities that sophisticated travelers have come to expect. Owners/proprietors Dan and Candy Cocilova purchased

Arbor Guest House

Arbor Guest House in November of 2008 and after a three-month refurbishment opened on February 24th, 2009. “We have truly enjoyed the last ten years meeting and becoming good friends with people from all over the United States and the world,” Dan says. “We have been blessed with a wonderful staff who are also responsible for our success.” The five available rooms at Arbor Guest House are furnished with plush beds and tasteful antiques and also offer flat screen TVs, iPod-docking stations, free Wi-Fi access and warming

fireplaces. Guests can also relax in the comfortable living room or enjoy the garden area with its gazebo, bocce court and sun decks. Breakfast is provided in a sunlit dining room that overlooks the garden and private vineyard, with dishes that include specialties like their Panettone French Toast, Chili-Cheese Puffs, and Potato-Leek Frittatas. Couples will also want to take advantage of the complimentary spa treatment package here, where two free 30-minute massages are included with a three-night stay.

A brunch-style breakfast is served daily from 8:30am to 10:00am, when guests can eat and interact with other guests in the dining room or have a seat at a private table on the porch with a companion. At the end of the day, from

5:00pm to 6:30pm, Brent and Chris welcome their guests on the porch for a tasting of local wines, cheese and charcuterie, and maybe even regale them with a story or two. Embrace Calistoga is conveniently located within walking distance of more than twenty restaurants and local hot springs and spas, and is just a block away from Vermeil Wines (owned by former pro football coach Dick Vermeil) with its wine bar and sports memorabilia. “We’ve been having fun and as long as the guests continue to enjoy it we’re going to keep doing it,”

says Brent Riedberger. “I love this valley.” Yountville has become one of the most sophisticated small towns in the country. shining example of commitment to a sustainable future. The green philosophy is integral to this elegant property but there's nothing austere about the accommodations here. Arranged around four landscaped courtyards, rooms each have private courtyards or balconies, high-thread-count organic bedding, gas fireplaces and sleeper sofas. All rooms come equipped with the hightech touches you'd expect of an upscale contemporary hotel, including a smart phone app to open the front door and motion sensors that adjust external blinds for energy efficiency. The property is also notable for its onsite spa, and bathrooms in all guest rooms have concealed massage tables so guests can receive treatments from the hotel’s B Spa in private. The culinary arts are also highly refined at Bardessono, and some of the ingredients for their farm-to-table restaurant, Lucy, come straight from their kitchen garden. Lucy serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with Happy Hour bar plates, and the chefs have even been known to whip up canine treats for guests traveling with their pets.

F

rench born vintner Jean-Charles Boisset has always had an affinity for history. His grandparents were history teachers. So, when he started building his Boisset Collection wine portfolio in California he looked for historically significant properties, which included the multi-generational Raymond Vineyards; California’s oldest winery, Buena Vista Winery, built in 1857; and DeLoach Vineyards, known for growing the first pinot noir on the Russian River in 1969. His latest acquisition is the nearly 140-year old Oakville Grocery, which is the oldest continuous operating grocery store in California. “I had the pleasure of coming here from France with my parents when I was 11 yearsold,” said Boisset. “While in Napa, we shopped at Oakville Grocery. My mother and my sister loved the store. We had a place just around the corner. I thought it was the most charming store among the vineyards and through the years I’ve continued to admire this amazing little vision that was created in 1881.”

The old school general store has been a landmark and iconic destination and gathering place for both locals and visitors for more than a century. When first opened, it had everything everyone needed at the time. It had a post office and sold items from hardware to fresh produce, cheeses and charcuterie; it was a mercantile as well as a farm stand. Boisset said it was a quick decision to buy the property when he was approached by the Rudd Family who had owned the property for 11 years and made significant restoration to the Oakville property, grocery store and the adjacent circa 1877 Victorian house. The purchase included the Oakville store and property as well as the sister location in Healdsburg in Sonoma County.

a purveyor of sustainable, organic, and biodynamic food. We will be phenomenally focused on the quality of ingredients whether it be the flour with which we make our pizza, the quality of the breads, the quality of the water, to the quality of all the vegetables we will be using in our salads. The veggies will come from our DeLoach gardens and soon to be two-acre garden at Raymond Vineyards.” Boisset, long a champion of certified sustainable, organic, and biodynamic practices, intends to anchor Oakville Grocery with offerings that echo this commitment. He and his team have invited local purveyors to introduce their products to them for consideration. A key focus will be on local California in-

“ We bought the store and the property because the name is phenomenal, the vision is extraordinary, and it’s located in the heart of Napa Valley’s history,” said Boisset. “Oakville is really where the Napa Valley started. I always had this vision that wine country can’t be just wineries and tasting.” Boisset embarked on his first epicurean venture in 2016 when he opened Boisset’s Atelier Fine Foods in Yountville. He continues to embrace all aspects of the lifestyle realm with a foot in the worlds of spirits, beer, cider, and luxury retail. Though his JCB Village in Yountville includes over-the-top décor and is a showplace for his personally designed jewelry, Oakville Grocery will remain approachable and down to earth. “JCB is JCB. Oakville Grocery is old 19th century,” said Boisset. “No bling. Very authentic. What we will change is the essence of what the grocery ought to be, which is

38

gredients, though he will also offer some imported items. “We often say that we do not own the land, we borrow it from the future generations,” said Boisset. “Oakville Grocery both in Sonoma and Napa Valley will become our call-to-action, to compel our communities to take a stand for the future of food, sustainability, and quality. Our mission is to be all California with sprinkles of international products. There will be a significant restoration of the content and quality of the products, vision of the products, and most importantly, the meaning of the products. We want everything to be very good for you, healthy, and sustainable.” Additional changes will include bringing back the robust wine shop that the store was known for.

The entire right side of the store will house a collection of wines categorized by Napa Valley’s 16 sub-appellations. “We want to be very inclusive,” he added. “It’s important that we are not over the top for just the few. This is a place for people of all walks of life to enjoy. We will offer serious high-quality goods, but that doesn’t mean more expensive. “Oakville Grocery has always been a gathering place whether it’s for coffee in the morning or a glass of beer or wine in the afternoon,” said Boisset. “We will continue to be that as well as offer a gourmet deli, fresh made pizza from our outdoor pizza oven and picnic supplies. Visitors can also take home a slice of Napa artisan products.” Keeping with Boisset’s love of history comes the new 1881 Napa wine museum and tasting salon at the Victorian house adjacent to the grocery store, where an outdoor patio feature panoramic views of the Mayacamas Mountains to the west, the Vaca Mountains to the east, and Mount St. Helena to the north. 1881 Napa will offer guests an opportunity to learn everything about the Napa Valley via a museum filled with maps, soil samples, information about the key personalities who shaped the Valley, more than 350 exclusive winery tools, decanters, wine glasses, and other historical wine-related items that Boisset has collected over the years from France, Italy, United States and Spain. Boisset helped catalog and create a description of each item in the museum. His team worked with Napa Valley historian Lynn Weber and wine educator and author Karen MacNeil to create a 30-page pamphlet on the Napa Valley wine history and description of the subAVAs. Museum tours will be free, and for a fee, guests can enjoy a variety of wine tasting flights from many of the 16 sub-AVAs.

“We love telling the story of history because we want Americans to be proud of their past. I know the history of a lot of countries, but I am most fascinated by the history of this place,” said Boisset. “So much of the history in California has happened in a short period of time. In France, there are voids in history, but not here. It took us a long time in France to get to where we are, but in America it took no time to become number one in everything. It’s the American way, the sense of democracy, sense of freedom.”

“ Here, we are providing a place where all our guests and friends can come and learn all about Napa. At all the wineries, they give out their story. Here we want to give out THE story. I always wanted a place where people could learn. Life is about learning. A day does not pass me by that I don’t strive to learn something new.”

40

NAPAVALLEYLIFE.COM

“We encourage people to dive into the history of the Napa Valley and to taste every AVA and get a sense of what Napa Valley is all about,” he said. “Then they can gallivant to individual wineries having a better understanding of the terroir, soil samples, micro climates and the people who came here and why. Wine is culture, wine is history, wine is agriculture, wine is creation, wine is making, wine is a labor of love. Discover that dialog and the beautiful conversation that makes wine so unique.” Boisset hopes to eventually share the Boisset Collection’s vision throughout the world by opening Oakville Grocery locations in other countries. “Europeans love the healthiness of California,” he said. “Ask ten French people their image of California… and their answer is that it’s a very healthy place.”

Commitment to Excellence

MATERRA/CUNAT FAMILY VINEYARDS  BY FRAN MILLER

Photos by Neena Cunat Heitz

I

t’s a family affair at Materra/Cunat Family Vineyards, located in Napa’s Oak Knoll AVA. Proprietors Brian and Miki Cunat’s youngest daughter Amie designs the wine labels and curates the winery’s art and décor. Older daughter Neena was instrumental in Materra’s initial operations and sustainability efforts, and her husband Harry handles marketing. Brian’s brother John is a lead investor, and the duo’s dad Dean gets a nod via the playfully dubbed ‘Dean’s List’ wine club – a title that not only honors their father’s life and influence, but also conveys the Cunat family’s commitment to excellence. The Oak Knoll location has been Materra’s home since 2007 when Brian Cunat purchased the lush property where he cultivates 52 prime acres of Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Viognier vines that are transformed into award-winning wines. The farm-raised, mid-west native had built a successful Chicago-based international real estate business and was ready for a new challenge when a love of travel and wine led him to Napa. Through hard work and a commitment to land stewardship, he and Miki quickly earned the trust of their neighbors and the wine making community. “We are here because of great wine,” said Cunat. “We’ve long loved beautiful wines, and we decided to pool our family resources to produce the absolute best wines we could, while also providing the best customer experience possible. Each family member contributes to the excellent customer service and hospitality that Materra provides each and every visitor.” By-appointment-only tastings are intimate and personalized. Guest are asked their favored flavor profiles. Are they wine novices, 42

NAPAVALLEYLIFE.COM

or experts? Are they seeking to gain knowledge, or simply relax and enjoy the winery’s beautiful atmosphere? “Either way, our team provides a very satisfying tasting experience that caters to each and every preference,” said Cunat. “From the minute we greet you at your car with a glass of chilled sauvignon blanc, to the last nibble of the artisan cheeses that accompany each tasting.” The name Materra is derived from the Latin words ‘mother’ and ‘earth,’ and is illustrative of the Cunat’s commitment to nurturing their land. The consistent quality of the French varietals derived from the rich soils are a perfect expression of this sun-soaked Oak Knoll AVA. Michael Trujillo, whose mentors include the great Andre Tchelistcheff, provides consultation, while winemaker Bruce Regalia (formerly of Duckhorn Wines, Calistoga’s Madrigal Wines, and Anderson Valley’s Goldeneye) oversees the dry-farmed vines using sustainable methods. Production and storage facilities also demonstrate an environmental commitment, as does the minimalist tasting room with it’s reclaimed wood tables, polished concrete floors, and iron fixtures. Materra wines can now be found in sixteen states as well as high-end hotels in Japan, China, and Canada. But the best place to experience Materra wines is within the winery’s welcoming lavender and flower-filled garden. “I want people to leave our winery with an experience they will remember,” said Cunat. A New Home for

HYDE VINEYARD ESTATE WINES  BY FRAN MILLER

H

aving long supplied some of California’s most revered wineries with grapes from his Carneros vineyard, it was only fitting that Larry Hyde eventually establish his own brand. It took him nearly thirty years to do so, but it was well worth the wait. Lucky was the consumer who might find Hyde’s estate varietals on the shelf of select wine merchants or on lists at some of Napa’s most lauded restaurants. And now, 40 years into his reign as one of Napa Valley’s original wine pioneers, Hyde has provided the public a fitting venue in which to enjoy his family’s small production varietals. Paul Hobbs, Patz & Hall, Kistler, DuMol and Shramsberg are just a few of the more than 30 premium producer winery clients who source their grapes from Hyde Vineyards, having benefitted through the years from Hyde’s personal experimentation with new clones, farming technique, and row direction. It is due to Hyde’s passion and expertise that half of these 30 proudly 44

place the ‘Hyde Vineyard’ designation on their labels. It had always been Hyde’s vision to create his own wines, and finally in 2006, he and his son Chris (now Hyde’s General Manager) planted the first vines that would produce the grapes for their own label. They started making a bit of Pinot Noir in 2009, and not surprisingly, received great response. These days, they are up to about 2000 cases of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Merlot, Viognier, and Syrah. Impressively, the duo’s success has not impinged on their relationship with their winery clients who continue to purchase nearly 85-percent of the Hyde bounty. “Making our own wines with these grapes makes us better growers,” said Chris. “We are able to witness first-hand the expression of each vintage while putting our personal touch on each varietal.” The Hyde family’s newly opened production facility and tasting room now allow the public to fully experience the breadth and brilliance of Larry Hyde’s decades

of viticultural mastery. Though located near the bustling Carneros Highway corridor, the Estate provides a serene escape overlooking their acclaimed vineyards. Featuring oak floors, cherry cabinets, cherry wood balusters, and mahogany windows and doors, the elegant tasting room is designed in the style of a Polish manor house, a nod to Larry’s Polish-born wife, Beta. By-appointment-only visits are intimate and personal, typically with no more than two groups in-house at a time. Guests can enjoy their Estate Tasting in the comfort of a private room or at the casual tasting bar. In summer months, an al fresco option is offered. As a true family operation, it’s not uncommon for Chris to lead a tour or tasting, and often, Larry himself will pop-in. “We take time with our guests,” said Chris. “We love to share our history, our story, and of course our wines.” HYDE ESTATE WINERY

He has no tasting room; he doesn’t advertise, and his wines are not found in local restaurants. Yet he consistently sells-out of his 10,000 annual cases of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Merlot, Malbec, and Sauvignon Blanc. How does he do it? He credits his label’s popularity to word of mouth and says his best advertising platform are his club members, many of whom have invited the Pennsylvania native to their out-of-state homes or social clubs in order for him to share his wines with their friends and family, and many of whom have travelled with him 46

internationally. As the vintner host of a 2018 Total Travel Wine/ AmaWaterways river cruise down the Danube, Maroon took center stage aboard ship, sharing his old and new world wine knowledge and expertise. "Paul is a wonderful wine host,” said Connie Saunders, CEO and Founder of Total Travel and Events, Inc. “He is so friendly and easy to get to know. His wine club members were thrilled to be able to spend a week in Europe traveling with him. And everyone on board got to enjoy his wine.” Maroon’s participation was so well received that he was invited again for an April 18, 2019 Bordeaux itinerary with AMAWaterways, where most cabins are already sold out. And in July 2020, he’ll take the cruise

to the Rhine River and sail from Amsterdam to Basel. Maroon’s first introduction to wine was during his teen years in Philadelphia when he helped his uncle make wine. “It was terrible,” laughs Maroon. But that didn’t deter his dream of one-day living amongst the vines in the Napa Valley, a dream realized in 2000, after 30 years in Silicon Valley as a cardiovascular device distributor. Maroon initially sold the grapes grown on his Coombsville AVA property that borders the Napa Country Club. But in 2008, he started making his own single vineyard, low manipulation wines. His Cabernet Sauvignon is made from his estate grapes, and a moderately oaked Chardonnay comes from Oak Knoll district

grapes. And he handcrafts an extremely small production of Malbec and Petite Verdot from a variety of vineyard sources that might change year to year. Maroon is also a distributor for an Australian label that promotes its high resveratrol wines. Most red wines contain a mere 5 mg per liter of this antiinflammatory agent, while The Wine Doctor Shiraz features 100 mg per liter – the health benefits of which are increasingly proven. Maroon is proud to sell on his website this first resveratrolenhanced wine. MAROON WINES

ZO WINES Farmstay Vineyards and Winery Estate  BY EVE BUSHMAN

O

ne could visit ZO Wines in the Dry Creek Valley area of Sonoma County just to taste their acclaimed wines – the 2019 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition awarded their 2017 Carignane Best of Class and awarded Gold Medals to their 2017 Zinfandel and 2017 Chardonnay; and the 2018 Sonoma Harvest Fair Competition awarded their 2017 Chardonnay Best of Class – but don’t stop there as this winery has even more to boast about. The name ZO comes from owner, grower and winemaker David Eckert’s experience living in Japan. “ZO” in Japanese means “elephant” and David and his wife Sachiko have an affinity for elephants and their giant and gentle nature. ZO Wines is a family run boutique Farmstay winery, and is “focused on four key pillars: stay, taste, learn and explore.” Eckert invites you to visit so that you can “take advantage of one or more of these experiences.” When a guest makes a Farmstay appointment, the stay includes a complimentary “Farmstay wine sensory and tasting experience.” Guests test their senses in an aromatic sensory workshop that includes sampling ZO small lot and handcrafted wines.

48

NAPAVALLEYLIFE.COM

You may choose to picnic during your tasting to linger over the wines, or stay overnight at one or more of their many guest rooms in the century old craftsman winery estate. The winery and The Farmstay Inn are surrounded by vineyards near Lake Sonoma in Sonoma County. Guests can soak up more of the winery experience as they enjoy the vineyard landscape, sweeping views and dining in exceptional local restaurants. Bring your friends, families (children are welcome) or just take a couple’s retreat at ZO Wines. The winery offers bicycles for rent, personalized tours and transportation – all in an effort to make your stay relaxing and carefree. The wines, available for purchase at the winery, are also available for shipping

to members of the Farmstay club – at greater member discounts, that also apply to everything they offer – including overnight accommodations. Their ownership of an estate vineyard, farm to glass focus and limited wine production allows ZO to focus completely on producing only the very best wine. Want more? Eckert’s team invests in both the local community and the world. The winery donates one percent of their time to assist local community charities and another one percent of their net sales is awarded to global elephant preservation. With a 5.0 rating on Yelp, Google, Trip Advisor and Facebook, and several nods from the prestigious and respected San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition what’s not to like?

SERIES

GET REACQUAINTED with CARNEROS  BY EVE BUSHMAN

NAPAVALLEYLIFE.COM

With its cool climate and historical location that crosses both Napa and Sonoma, Carneros continues to be recognized for producing award winning Pinot Noir and Chardonnay

W

indswept, cool, with gently rolling hills, the Los Carneros American Viticultural Area (AVA) is a distinctive region with a long winemaking history dating back to the early 1800s. Stretching from the San Pablo Bay to the foothills of the Mayacamas, the area is unique both for its cool climate and for straddling both Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley. Every AVA has to establish itself by proving that it has a unique terrain, weather, terroir, etc. The cool climate that distinguishes Carneros from its neighbors is what makes the perfect growing conditions for both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Carneros’ close proximity to the San Pablo Bay puts a distinct quality stamp on its grapes. Warm days are tempered by fog and brisk breezes, leading to a longer growing season. Carneros is the first appellation that gained its status for specific climate designation, as well as for the fact that it spans two counties. The cool climate of Carneros is ideal for producing fine Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and many of the region’s vintners specialize in these two varietals, as well as Sparkling wines which are typically produced from these two varietals (as well as Pinot Meunier). Wineries in other parts of Napa and Sonoma often own vineyards in Carneros as well – as it is a sought-after grape growing region for the varieties that are best suited to the climate. Visitors to the area can explore a wide variety of wineries, including Cuvaison Estate, Domaine Chandon, Saintsbury, The Donum Estate, ZD Wines, Artesa Vineyards & Winery, Bouchaine Vineyards, Domaine Carneros, Etude, Calmere Estate Winery, Poseidon Vineyard, Schug Carneros Estate Winery, Starmont Winery, Viansa Sonoma, Ca’Momi and Truchard Vineyards. Closely linked to the nearby town of Sonoma, the area has a rich agricultural and winegrowing history. Beginning as far back as the 1830s vineyards were planted in Carneros. By the 1870s the first winery was established and by 1983 Carneros received their official AVA status. There were few Europeans in the area before the Mission San Francisco Solano in Sonoma was built in 1832 and missionaries established outposts. The Carneros area was historically populated by native Patwin, Coast Miwok and Wintun tribes. A historical ecology report commissioned with the planting of Stanly Ranch and Soscol Vineyard estimates 8,000 native people in the Napa Valley in 1832 and a sizeable settlement of around 700-1,000 members where the Butler bridge crosses the Napa river by Stanly Ranch. Early pioneers had to contend with Indian tribes, bears and the possibility of fighting off Russian soldiers. The Carneros area was under Mexican jurisdiction until the Americans took control in the Bear Flag revolt in 1846. By that point, agriculture was well established, with farmers growing pears, plums apples and apricots as well as grapes. Though the combination of phylloxera and Prohibition put a pause on the wine industry, the region experienced a rebirth in the mid1900s and the passion to make award winning wine from the region continues today. Voices of Carneros SNIPPETS FROM THE CARNEROS WINE ALLIANCE

“ When we founded the Carneros Wine Alliance 30 years ago we saw the potential for The Carneros AVA to be considered a leading appellation for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Now, Carneros is known around the world as a producer of world - class wines and a wine capital in its own right. I’m so very proud and honored to have been part of this history and I’m looking forward to the next three decades of promoting our beautiful appellation and the wines that are created here.” Anne Moller-Racke, Winegrower & President at The Donum Estate

“ Los Carneros is such a special place within California, with a unique ability to grow wines that are delicate and restrained and complex. Most of the vineyards in the region are in at least their second or third generation, growers and winemakers have a deeper understanding of their sites than ten or twenty years ago, and the wines coming from this AVA have never been more interesting and exciting. There’s no place on earth I’d rather be making wines right now.” usan Sueiro, President S at Artesa Vineyards & Winery “ I’m lucky enough to live just next door to the Carneros region in Napa and I get to spend hours of each week walking our vineyards. One of my favorite things about the Carneros region is its utter peacefulness. There can be a lot of hustle and bustle in wine country and if I ever need a breath of fresh air, I head to our Carneros vineyards for a welcome break. The combination of rural and sophisticated charm is part of what makes Carneros so attractive to visitors and locals alike.” Alison Crowe, Director of Winemaking at Garnet Vineyards

52

NAPAVALLEYLIFE.COM

“ Our founding vintage was a Pinot Noir made by my grandfather in 1969, and this was the first wine to include the official ‘Carneros’ designate on the label. 50 years later, we continue to proudly produce Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines from our highly acclaimed certified organic estate vineyards in the Carneros region.” Brandon deLeuze, Winemaker at ZD Wines

“ My first full-time job out of UC Davis was in Carneros, at Saintsbury, where my job interview consisted of one question: Baseball or Football? SF Giants, baby and I’ve been working in Carneros ever since. I joined Cuvaison in 2002 and oversee our Estate Vineyard and the Cuvaison wines which are all derived from this single vineyard.” Steve Rogstad, Winemaker at Cuvaison Estate Wines “ I have been crafting Carneros wines for nearly 15 years, and I am continuously impressed by this extraordinary region. Just on our ranch alone we have 13 different soil types resulting in expressive and singular wines.” Jon Priest, Winemaker at Etude

Current board members are comprised of wine grape growers as well as winery representatives. The 2019 board includes Hilary Berkey of Vintage Estates (Co-Chair), Emily Byrne of Etude Wines (Co-Chair), Nichole Peterson of Artesa Vineyards & Winery (Vice-Chair), Carla Bosco (Treasurer), Crista Johnson (Secretary), Michael Cox of Schug Carneros Estate, Scott Billeci of ZD Wines, Anne Moller-Racke of The Donum Estate, and Alison Crowe of Garnet Vineyards. DOMAINE CARNEROS L'élégance Française in Los Carneros  BY LAURA LARSON | PHOTO BY DAVID COLLIER

P

erched on top of one of Los Carneros’ undulating hillsides, Domaine Carneros serves as a grand beacon for Southern Napa Valley’s Carneros region. Built-in 1989 by the Champagne Taittinger family, the striking eighteenth– century château was architecturally inspired by the historic Château de la Marquetterie owned by Champagne Taittinger near Epernay, France. The Taittingers acquired the sprawling 138-acre property in 1986 after a ten-year quest to plant a stake in the up and coming wine growing region of Los Carneros. The cool climate, gentle breezes and proximity to the San Pablo Bay were the perfect muses to grow exceptional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and produce elegant and balanced sparkling wines, which Domaine Carneros is best known for today. 54

NAPAVALLEYLIFE.COM

Once the Taittingers acquired the property, they searched to find a winemaker who could help them build Domaine Carneros to be a worthy counterpart to the Taittinger House in France. In 1987 they selected a passionate winemaker named Eileen Crane who was making wine and managing operations at Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards. Eileen had already started making a name for herself as a formidable sparkling winemaker at a time when the playing field was squarely dominated by men. Her appointment at Domaine Carneros resulted in a whirlwind adventure which began with producing Domaine Carneros’ inaugural vintage, and soon after, the considerable task of overseeing the construction and management of the winery. Today, thirty years later,

Crane still serves as Domaine Carneros’ sparkling winemaker and chief executive officer. Eileen Crane is not only one of the wine industry’s early pioneers, her fortyyear pedigree as an experienced sparkling winemaker earned her the reputation as the doyenne of Sparkling wine in America. Her commitment to excellence in winemaking and hospitality has made Domaine Carneros the iconic winery it is today. Domaine Carneros is comprised of 400 acres of six estate vineyards, mostly planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Cranes’ commitment to ultra-premium quality wines is based on the gentle handling and detail that goes into each bottle. The grapes are harvested by hand and grown on the Estate, where she leverages her intimate knowledge of the vineyards to refine each stage of the process from vine to glass. Best known as a small grower-producer of méthode traditionelle sparkling wine, under Eileen Crane’s charge, Domaine Carneros wines are elegant in range and style from classic vintage-dated Brut to their sumptuous Le Rêve Blanc de Blancs, which just celebrated its 20th Anniversary vintage in 2018. An experience at the Château is intended to be equally elegant and memorable. Guests are offered a sampling of curated wines which they may relax and enjoy on the expansive terrace overlooking the vineyards or in the stunning new Garden Conservatory, which was recently added in 2018. The glass-enclosed “Jardin d’Hiver” architecture is designed reminiscent of the Art- Nouveau style of French architect Gustave Eiffel with floor to ceiling glass walls that allure guests to take in the vineyard views. In addition to a relaxing afternoon sampling wine, visitors may also choose to enjoy their newly added “Bubbles and Bites” program; an educational five-course curated pairing menu designed to complement their sparkling wines or take an “art of sparkling wine” tour with a behind the scenes glimpse into sparkling wine production Domaine Carneros has become the benchmark for Sparkling wine, showcasing the unique attributes of the Carneros terroir, and the elegant savoir-faire of its French heritage. From its French-inspired wines to its landmark Château which prominently graces the gateway between Napa and Sonoma in Los Carneros, your visit will be one to remember. FOR MORE INFORMATION

DONUM

Deep in the Heart of Carneros

D

onum has roots that run deep in Carneros. The Estate was acquired back in 1984 by the Racke Family of Germany, and the original vineyards were planted and farmed for the Buena Vista Winery. After the sale of Buena Vista in 2001, the Moller-Racke family kept 200 acres of the now Donum ranch and started this new project Donum. Founder and Winegrower Anne Moller-Racke set out to produce exceptional Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays based on the Burgundian grand cru model using only estate-farmed fruit. Tended with gentle care to each block, row, and vine over the years, the perfectly situated vineyards have continuously provided the foundation for Moller-Racke and Winemaker Dan Fishman to create wines that are elegant, well-balanced, and full of body. After 18 vintages, Donum is respected as one of the best California Pinot Noir producers. In 2011, a group of Danish investors, led by Allen and Mei Warburg, purchased Donum. The Warburgs developed a personal affinity for the Carneros Estate’s rolling hills, gentle breezes, and the exquisite wines produced from the land. As avid wine and art collectors, their inspirational vision was to create a sanctuary where one could absorb the

powerful juxtaposition of wine, nature, and art in one magical place. With the vineyards and natural beauty already in place, they began to acquire what is now a 40 piece, larger than life collection of sculptures created by artists from 20 different countries. The pieces are handselected based on their medium, origin and history, and meticulously placed on the Estate with the intention to create a unique sensory experience depending on the view, topography and lighting throughout each day. On the Estate’s highest elevation, Richard Hudson’s 24’ tall stainless-steel heart entitled “Love Me” is one of Donum’s most lauded works, appropriately so, with its landmark placement revealing its intention to represent the Universe and eternity. Over the years, Donum’s Carneros Estate has developed to become selfsustaining, and in spring 2019, the property’s latest project, a 10,000-case capacity state of the art winery will be open for production. Designed by architect Matt Hollis, the footprint of the property’s original dairy barn has been transformed using the same traditional-modern aesthetic elegantly showcased by Hollis’ original design of the hospitality center, which opened in fall, 2017.

Anne Moller-Racke takes great pride in the history of the property, which has been under her stewardship since the mid-1980s. Early on she recognized the incredible possibilities the Carneros Region had to offer. Her passion led her to play a key role in establishing the Carneros Wine Alliance and the ultimate acclaim and recognition of Carneros as one of California’s most impressive AVAs. She credits the cultivation of small, boutique producers to the allure of the region, and maintains that conviction with her vision for the future of Donum. Donum’s portfolio expands beyond the Carneros Ranch to include estate vineyards in the Russian River, Anderson Valley and now also the true Sonoma Coast. Donum’s 5,000 case project focuses on the composition of small lots, capturing the unique nuances and expressions of a single clone planted in a designated block within each vineyard. Donum is a Latin word meaning “gift,” and its origin depicts what Anne MollerRacke and the Warburgs set out to give to all of us – an inspirational experience that connects one’s love for wine, art, and nature in one unique place. MYRIAD CELLARS

and the Myriad of Reasons to Love 100 Point Winemaker

mike smith

 BY EVE BUSHMAN | PHOTOS BY JASON LEE

Winemaker Mike Smith is on a qualitative roll, garnering 100 point scores everywhere he turns. This past season alone, he added up five more perfect 100 points scores to his very impressive resume.

O

n Smith’s 20th vintage, 15 wine brands under his watch, a passion for crafting Napa Valley wine and being known as one of the nicest guys in Napa Valley, he has worked his way up to being one of Napa Valley’s top winemakers. Smith’s wines are silky, sexy, new world and have a level of flavor and freshness that customers clamor for. His brand Myriad Cellars is one of the top wine labels in California selling swiftly through mailing list allocation – likely due to his Cabernets being ranked among some of the top in the world. 58

NAPAVALLEYLIFE.COM

Choosing the right vineyards is key to Smith. Focusing on single vineyard designates allows him to create wines with a beautiful collection of story and soul. He challenges himself to show a sense of place by letting the vineyard speak first in his wines. Smith believes that having a great relationship with vineyard managers and owners is one of the important aspects of great winemaking. He relies heavily on their expertise to cultivate the fruit he wants to work with in the winery, and then works with his own winery team to develop his premium handcrafted wines. He loves to make wine, and just likes to get his hands dirty.

Smith is humble, hardworking and prefers to keep his head down and just make great wines that speak for themselves.

Born and raised in Sonoma Valley, Smith’s roots are set in the soils of wine country. Smith remembers his young years of visiting wineries with his parents, and riding dirt bikes through the vineyards with his dog. Smith feels that it was “such a beautiful and simple place to grow up.” Attending Oregon State for a bachelor's degree in International Business, he was surrounded once again by vineyards and wine in Oregon’s Willamette Valley where he began to explore Oregon Pinot Noir. “I was always drawn to wine….it has interested me my whole life,” Smith said. “My college roommate had a job at a local wine shop, he would bring home the leftovers after a day of tasting, and you know, at that age ‘free booze’ was very appealing. We eventually started to research the wines we were drinking in the Wine Spectator…and from there I was hooked.” Smith met his wife Leah in college. Leah recalls, “Mike has always been into wine, he stored wine under his bunk bed in his fraternity when I met him. Our first dates were to the Oregon wine country discovering Pinot Noir and then driving our beat up old mini van from there to Napa Valley to taste California wines. Wine runs through his veins.”

The Smiths continued their passion for wine and winemaking, traveling to Napa Valley from Oregon several times a year, and in 1999 Smith placed an ad in the Wine Spectator online for trading wine. Many people answered, but one person in general stood out: Thomas Rivers Brown, one of Napa’s most accomplished winemakers according to Wine Spectator (November, 2018). The two met over trading Turley wines for Smith’s Oregon Pinot collection. Then Brown extended an offer for Smith to come work a harvest. Smith indeed came down and slept on Brown’s couch working free of charge to learn the craft of commercial winemaking from 1999 to 2003. In 2004 he accepted a fulltime harvest position from Brown. Leah recalls jokingly, “It was for $12 an hour and we never thought twice as I’ve never met someone more meant to make wine than Mike Smith!” The Smiths sold their house, quit their jobs and moved with their two young daughters to St. Helena to follow this dream. After working for Thomas for four years, Smith branched out on his own. He started his own label, Myriad Cellars, in 2005. He began making the wines for Tamber Bey and Constant Winery in 2007, and was offered the Carter Cellars winemaking position in 2008.

Smith said, “I was given a great piece of advice from vintner Les Behrens when I first moved here, ‘Never take your hands off your own wines.’ As he said this to me I looked down at his shoes and they were covered in lees. I’ll never forget that moment.” Smith’s wines have been on the cover of the Wine Spectator twice and he has received the most 100 points scores per vintage – twice – from Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate. He took what he calls a rare ‘Double Hundy’ just this year, with two separate top wine critics giving one of his Cabernet Sauvignons a perfect 100 point score.

A Passion to Be Shared:

KENEFICK RANCH  BY FRAN MILLER

T

o join the Kenefick Ranch wine club is to become part of the Kenefick family. Members of this intimate group share not only the top-quality spoils of the winery’s small production of Bordeaux and Rhone varietals, they also share camaraderie with proprietor Dr. Tom Kenefick, son Chris who serves as VP of sales, daughter Caitlin who assists in Marketing, and the entire Kenefick Ranch team, each of whom maintains a passion for their Calistoga land and for great wine. Personable, humble, and modest, Dr. Kenefick might prefer to fly slightly under the viticultural radar, but with a forty-year history in the Napa Valley, his name precedes him. The former San Francisco neurosurgeon now lives full time on the property he purchased in the late 1970’s and at age 83, he continues to oversee all vineyard operations, ensuring sustainability of this Calistoga’s palisades property. And his grapes? Simply legendary. For 25 years, premium labels such as Caymus, Shafer, Eisele, Nickel & Nickel, Cade, B Cellars, and Venge have used Kenefick grapes, and several choose to showcase the fact with a vineyard designation on their labels. 60

NAPAVALLEYLIFE.COM

These days, one need not explore other labels to experience the results of Dr. Kenefick’s meticulous supervision of his 125 Calistoga AVA vineyards. Since 2002, the winery has produced its own Kenefick Ranch label; varietals now include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache Blanc, and Petite Sirah.

“ Kenefick Ranch is unique because, while some people immediately get involved in producing their own wine, we focused on the grape growing side for almost 25 years before producing our first vintage,” said Chris. “We think that great wines start in the vineyard so we wanted to master this side before producing our own wine and we think it shows in every bottle.”

Kenefick Ranch wines are found at select wine merchants across the country, and at Napa restaurants such as Sam’s Social Club, Solbar, and Norman Rose Tavern. Only 4,000 cases are produced annually, and the best way to experience the most limited quantity varietals, such as the winery’s first Malbec vintage and a Grenache Blanc, is via club membership. Kenefick wines can also be taste-tested at nearby Fairwinds Estate Winery along the Silverado Trail. The vibe of the welcoming co-op environment is relaxed and low-key, and tastings often include a few locally-sourced nibbles. “When you visit the tasting room, you get a sense of what Napa used to be - where it’s all about the wine and a friendly conversation,” said Chris. “We let our wine speak for itself and make sure that people have a great time while tasting.” FOR MORE INFORMATION: visit the Kenefick

The Hess Collection ELEVATES WINE TASTING  BY FRAN MILLER

There is more to Hess than meets the eye. Most wine drinkers are likely familiar with the ultra popular label, whose Chardonnay has long held prime shelf space at wine retailers across the United States. But Hess has a little secret. The winery, located high atop Napa’s Mt. Veeder AVA, in the shadow of the majestic Mayacamas mountains, also crafts small quantity, single vineyard varietals not easily found, and treasured by those-in-the-know. The best way to sample and purchase these coveted premium wines? Via a visit to their historic property where a number of exceptional wine tasting experiences showcase the Hess bounty.

62

T

he Hess venue, setting, and ambiance alone make a visit worthwhile. A world-class assemblage of art pieces deepens the layer of interest. Add a respected chef who pushes culinary boundaries with creative cuisine that showcases Hess’ 15 different varietals, and a bit of wine country magic is achieved. “Wine tasting within the Napa Valley has changed over the past several years,” said Cesar Ramirez, Hess Collection’s guest relations specialist, whose passion for creative engagement with Hess fans has led to a variety of unique wine tasting experiences. “At Hess, our amazing consumer experiences provide an exceptional platform for enjoying some of our most highly prized wines.” Take for instance the ‘Hess Excursions:’ a choice of three different tastings, each preceded by an ATV vineyard ride through the winery’s historic Mont La Salle vineyard, and each followed by a wine tasting, wine and food pairing, or wine and cheese pairing prepared by Executive Chef Chad

Hendrickson, or for the purists, simply a current release tasting of Mount Veeder wines. Chef Hendrickson finds inspiration in the components of both the Hess Napa Valley wines and the Mount Veeder estate vineyard wines and his culinary creations complement each perfectly. Wine pairing options include perfectly paired bites, a cheese pairing tasting, and for the sweet-toothed crowd, a decadent wine and chocolate pairing satiates with artisan truffles handcrafted by Hess chocolatier Linda Rodriguez. For those seeking a bit of culture as they sip, there is no better place within Napa to indulge. With The Hess Collection’s ‘Estate Experiences,’ the on-site contemporary art museum takes center stage during the Museum Walk Guided Art Tour, featuring works from Donald Hess’ private collection, followed by a tasting of current release wines. A blending experience, and tastings of special wines not found on the public tasting menu roundout these unique adventures.

“ It’s amazing what we have curated for our guests,” said Ramirez. “Only here will Napa Valley visitors find such diversity of experiences. Whether enjoying beautifully crafted wine and food pairings, strolling the awe-inspiring art collection, or taking-in the stunning mountain vineyard views aboard our high performance ATV– we have an experience for everyone.”

POGGI WINES Unapologetically Small  BY LAURA LARSON

W

hen you meet Tom and Laurie Poggi, they sparkle with excitement when they talk about their unexpected foray into the world of winemaking and the inaugural release of their label, Poggi Wines. Both originally from the Mid-West, Tom & Laurie ended up in the Bay Area working successful careers in Commercial Real Estate and Finance industries. It was Tom who introduced Laurie to Wine Country, an area he fell in love with visiting friends on weekends. Tom and Laurie first started exploring acquiring a second home as a reason to “get out of the office” to relax and decompress on weekends. In 2004 they discovered a quaint parcel in Calistoga with a small house and a quarter-acre vineyard with 427 vines planted to Syrah. They fell in love with the location and made an offer to purchase the property, and soon they were commuting to Napa every weekend, immersing themselves in the local community and tasting some of the area’s most exquisite wines. Surprisingly the vineyard, while intriguing, was not the reason for the purchase, but it was in good company, located a stone’s 64

NAPAVALLEYLIFE.COM

throw away from some of Napa Valley’s most iconic vineyards and wineries, such as Eisele, Kenefick Ranch, Frediani Vineyards and Kelly Fleming Wines. The prior homeowner harvested the small vineyard and produced home wines, and after the Poggis took ownership, Placido Garcia (45 year veteran of Chateau Montelena) agreed to stay on to help them manage the vineyard. The vineyard is flanked by two symmetrically planted Palm trees at the entrance, so they decided to name it “Twin Palms.” Coincidentally the name also tied into the fact Laurie is an identical twin. Working with Placido, they harvested the grapes and “gave them” to a local winemaker in exchange for half the wine production. After two years, Tom’s motivations and Laurie’s curiosity led Tom to team up with a local neighbor to try his hand at making wine in his garage. Placido suggested the Poggis consider hiring a consulting winemaker and introduced them to Ignacio Blancas (longtime winemaker at Summers)

Soon after, they grafted the 427 Syrah vines with Cabernet Sauvignon and a few rows of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot and in 2011 they produced their first vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon. Their efforts gained notoriety several years running by winning best in class awards in home winemaking competitions. After realizing the quality of the wines created from this terroir, and encouragement from Ignacio, they set about to make their wines commercially. The Poggi’s released their first commercial vintage, a Cabernet Sauvignon blend, from Twin Palms vineyard in 2014. Unfortunately, based on their small size, they experienced challenges finding a crush partner, so they decided to expand their label to include a single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from a prestigious vineyard on Diamond Mountain. Between the two vineyards, they currently produce approximately 75 -100 cases of each wine. While the heritage of the fruit carries formidable lineage, Laurie and Tom’s intentions as wine producers are built around pride over profit. Tom says “If you enjoy something, you want to tell everyone about it and share it. It’s not about the money. It’s about the fact we work hard, and we are fortunate to have this opportunity.” What’s important to them is being able to drink great wine with good friends as often as possible. They want to create high-quality, high-value Napa Valley Cabernet that doesn’t need to be stashed away for a special occasion. In a market rife with luxury labels that for many are way out of reach, their price point at $75 SRP appeals to wine lovers who want to drink a gorgeous, well rounded Napa Valley Cabernet any day of the week. Tom and Laurie’s unassuming and convivial approach to the business is based on their commitment to remain small. They are “unapologetically small,” and they intend to stay that way. Keeping production at a manageable level distinguishes them in an expanding field of winery mergers and large corporate acquisitions where ownership can seem anonymous. For the Poggi’s it’s all about meeting and getting to know their customers on a more personal level and sharing their wines with “friends they haven’t met yet.” They believe reallife attachments are the most rewarding connections and a true connection in the world of Napa Valley wine is something worth pursuing.

SODARO

ESTATE WINERY A Sense of Place  BY LAURA LARSON

S

ome of Coombsville’s bestkept secrets are intrinsic to the rolling vineyards that produce rich, dark fruit for some of Napa Valley’s most memorable wines. Sodaro Estate Winery represents one of these inconspicuous treasures, strategically located just minutes from downtown Napa, yet seemingly many miles away from the urban bustle. The Sodaro Estate winery was founded in 1998 by Don and Deedee Sodaro. While Don spent several decades as a successful entrepreneur launching a hotel chain, his passion was rooted in his love for agriculture and his family’s heritage in farming. As a kid growing up in Illinois, he worked closely with his father on the family farm. Over the years, he developed a true appreciation for the art of growing fruit and was humbled by the reward of the bounties produced from the land. In the late nineties, Don was presented with an opportunity to invest in a winery project on the Central Coast, but his plans were thwarted by Deedee’s desire to live in an area which offered more versatility for a cooler climate. The opportunity

66

NAPAVALLEYLIFE.COM

sparked his passion for farming and the subsequent purchase of the twenty one-acre property in Coombsville. The acreage is perfectly situated for growing the five Bordeaux varietals of grapes, and its rolling hills offer breathtaking views that resemble the hillside vineyards of Tuscany. At the time Don purchased it in 1998, there was a dilapidated Chardonnay vineyard which had to be ripped out. He hired Industry veterans Mike Wolf and Paul Skinner to evaluate and test the soils before replanting vines. It turned into a project lasting several years, but the outcome resulted in a meticulous scientific assessment and the retrenching of soil to provide the perfect juxtaposition of the terroir. The Sodaros hired Dawnine Dyer as their founding winemaker, and they released their first commercial vintage in 2003. In 2002 they took on the massive undertaking of relocating the residence to another perch on the property so they could prepare the hillside to carve out a state of the art 3500gallon capacity cave for wine production. Once completed in 2005, they incorporated a handsomely appointed, Old

World style underground tasting room, which opened in 2007. Dyer made wines for the Sodaros until 2012 when they had a changing of the guard. They hired Denis Malbec as their winemaker, and Ernie Ilsley took over the reins as Vineyard Manager. Denis brought a bright, young cellar manager over with him named Leo Tellez, and after Malbec’s unexpected passing in 2016, Leo has led the charge of the 500-700 case winemaking operation. Sodaro wines are harvested from the Estate, small in production but big in flavor and presentation. They are best known for their five Bordeaux varietal blend, Felicity, which is supple, well balanced and approachable for any palate or pocketbook. Priced at $75, it gives most single vineyard Napa grown Cabernet wines a run for the money. In recent years, Sodaro Estate has taken great pride and accolades for their single vineyard Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, and Estate Reserve Cabernet, which represents the best vineyard fruit hand selected from each vintage. A tasting experience at Sodaro is an experience for the senses. After entering the winding gravel

driveway up to the winery, visitors take in stunning views of the surrounding vineyards from a high crest at the top of the Estate. Depending on the weather or preference, a curated selection of current and library vintage wines are poured from the overlook or hosted in the tasting room, at a long, Tuscan style wooden table inside the cave. The staff seems like family, all working together as a team, and often Don and Deedee are around to join in the conversation.

With all the exciting growth, underway in Napa city due west, a visit to Sodaro Estate is truly a genuine, small family winery Napa Valley experience where one can catch their bearings with a sense of place. FOR MORE INFORMATION

RED THREAD WINES

CONNECTING WINE, LOVE AND LIFE  BY LAURA LARSON

A

ccording to Chinese legend, the gods would tie an invisible red thread around the ankles of people that fate would one day bring together. The invisible string would be their way of finding one another. The thread may stretch or tangle, but will never break. Gretchen and Brian Brakesman discovered their red thread in 2001 when they met on a chance encounter at a bar in the Mission District of San Francisco. The meeting was serendipitous since Brian was far from his home in Angwin, CA, approximately 75 miles from the city. At the time, Gretchen, a city girl living in San Francisco, never imagined she would meet and fall in love with a farmer. The chance meeting proved timing is everything. Brian lived and worked in Napa Valley, overseeing his family’s farm, Summit Lake Vineyards, twenty-acres of premier vineyard property at the top of Howell Mountain. At the time, Gretchen was a sales executive and her territory spanned Northern California. Inseparable since they met, Gretchen ended up moving to Napa Valley so they could be closer together. The two eventually married in 2003. Brian learned the family wine business from the ground up. He did everything from driving a tractor, supporting harvest and wine production every year and learning how to make wine with mentor winemakers Bob Lamborn (Lamborn Family Vineyards) and John Gibson (Stags Leap, Vine Cliff, JGW Consulting) who taught him the fine nuances of blending. Gretchen embraced Napa Valley and immersed herself in the wine business. She took on various leadership roles within the Industry both at wineries and within the local community, and always had multiple projects and business endeavors underway. Soon Gretchen and Brian realized they could leverage her dynamic skills in sales and marketing and his hands-on knowledge of the wine business to open their own wine consulting business, Red Thread Wine 68

NAPAVALLEYLIFE.COM

Company. The full-service consulting firm offers partner wineries support from dirt to glass, including vineyard sourcing, production services, winemaking, and custom sales and marketing. Eventually, the Brakeman's decided they wanted to harness their passion and the premium services they were offering other brands into the creation of their own label, and soon after, Red Thread Wines was born. In 2014, they produced their first two barrels of wine from the grapes they harvest from Summit Lake Vineyards, the Brakesman family property. The flagship vintage set the stage for the uniqueness of their brand with the introduction of their Zinfandel Rose’. The process they undertook was atypical for Howell Mountain fruit, picking the grapes at twenty-two brix, resulting in lower alcohol. The wine is bright in color and lively on the palate, with notes of summer fruit and based on its’ popularity, they Photo by Stacy Gleason plan to use the same wine to produce a Howell Mountain Sparking Brut Rose made in the traditional Methode Champenoise. When they release it in January 2020, it will be the first of its kind. They also produce a voluptuous Estate red blend produced from Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Petite Syrah. The Estate Blend is a true representation of the terroir with its balance of dark fruit and full body. While wines from Howell Mountain are renowned for their luxury, Gretchen and Brian have priced their wines to be approachable and accessible as possible, hoping to connect the fate of other wine lovers who share their same passion. Using their unexpected destiny as their muse, they believe they have “created a wine that will connect people with the many joys, laughter, and love that life brings.” Just like the Chinese legend, connection is everything. The Red Thread connection creates a bond through the brilliance of wine creation, food pairing, personal enjoyment and sharing with family and friends. PERFECT PROVENANCE: T H E T W O M O S T I M P O R TA N T WORDS IN WINE

70

NAPAVALLEYLIFE.COM

Stepping inside a winery tasting room or brightly-lit shop, grape variety, flavor, and price tend to dominate the conversation, but a wine’s provenance is equally or more important. You spend your hard earned money on great wine, but it doesn't matter how remarkable a wine is if it doesn't make it to your door in pristine condition.

I

n a world that seems to value cost-cutting and quickness above all else, we have always put perfect provenance above all. Sometimes, this means delivery might take a little longer. Wine Access works with multiple wineries and delivery experts to get wines to your table or cellar as quickly as possible, without exposing them to heat, light, or subpar storage conditions at any time. Because this is wine they’re talking about. Whether opening a bottle now or in twenty years down the road, you’ll be glad you ordered it from Wine Access. Read on to learn about what can threaten wine in transit, and how Wine Access maintains the integrity of every bottle we sell.

Heat Wine is incredibly sensitive to temperature. And although everyone knows (we hope!) that wine should be stored at a cool temperature, many don’t realize that rapid temperature fluctuations—hot and cold—can damage a wine’s aroma, flavor, and color in hours. The delivery chain is fraught with danger points, and although wine sellers should be expected to guard against them at all costs, recent studies show that nearly one in three bottles is exposed to potentially damaging temperature fluctuations during shipping. For wine lovers, this can mean a major bummer, and an especially embarrassing one if it happens in front of guests: Nothing kills a dinner party quicker than a red with overcooked dried fruit and vinegar aromas, or a white whose

energy and fresh fruit have been zapped, and replaced by dull, sour, off-putting flavors. Wine Access ships every offer in temperature-controlled vehicles (with digital thermometers located inside the shipping containers) and check weather patterns for heat waves, storms, and cold snaps to ensure no case is ever left in an environment where extreme temperatures are present. If that means holding wines for months, that’s what they will do for you.

Light A hot journey is enough to ruin a wine, but the damage doesn’t end with temperature. Light is another enemy of wine, and many bottles lose their unique personality because of exposure to harsh light in a fault called Lightstrike. This is why early winemakers (very wisely) bottled their wares in dark green glass—to combat light damage. Today, research suggests they were wise to do so. Excessive and harmful types of light can transform the amino acids naturally found in wine, which can create off-putting sulfur-type aromas. When bottles are left to languish for weeks and months on sunny store shelves and in window displays, light can severely damage a wine’s color, making vibrant reds look tired and brown, and reducing once-golden whites to a dingy sandpaper hue. At Wine Access, bottles never see the sun or ultraviolet light on their route from the winery’s cellar to your front door.

Fraud It sounds so simple that they shouldn’t have to say it: The name on any label should match what’s in the bottle. At Wine Access their direct connection to each winery guarantees no mischief is made between the chateaux and your home. Their suppliers are the producers of the wine, and they hold the bottles until they are purchased, avoiding dangerous, complex transfers and opportunities for fraud. At Wine Access, they know that nobody cherishes wine like the men and women who make it, so they bring wines direct from the source to you. Online and at retail, wines sometimes appear at prices that are unbelievable—in the good way. Often, these are “grey market” wines that have changed hands many times, between private cellars, different retailers, shadowy flim-flam artists, you name it.

All too often, the low prices attached to these wines turn out to be too good to be true— in the bad way. Often, they’ve been moved between cellars and warehouses repeatedly, with exposure to light, heat, and cold along the way. By working directly with each winery, they guarantee the provenance of each bottle.

A wine’s story isn’t complete until the bottle is empty. The next time you pop a cork, taste the Napa Valley; feel the Southern Rhône’s sunshine; or smell Australia’s coastal, salty breezes. A bottle with perfect provenance has the power to transport you. How you experience it — that’s your story.

In celebration of its 25th Anniversary of chamber music festivals, Music in the Vineyards is introducing Gardens in the Vineyards; an exclusive, guided presentation of four stunning gardens in the Napa Valley. The event will take place at 4:00 PM on Friday, May 17 when roses are in full bloom and the summer is just beginning.

T

he experience begins at Robert Mondavi Winery where patrons will board luxury mini-coaches with sparkling wine and enjoy a private tour of four incredible gardens in the Napa Valley. Each garden will be presented by the homeowner and/ or landscape architect, allowing visitors an insider’s view of some of our region’s most exquisite gardens. Tour a traditional Englishstyle and edible garden, a green and white garden, a garden with bountiful roses at their peak, and a succulent oasis inspired by The Ruth Bancroft Garden. Gather inspiration for your very own plot, or simply marvel at the beauty of these spaces, all featured at one time in a private tour of the nationally renowned Garden Conservancy. Following the garden tours, return to Mondavi for a twilight reception and a silent auction featuring luxury botanical items inspired by Gardens in the Vineyards. The evening concludes with a gourmet,

wine-paired dinner by Mondavi's in-house chef Jeff Mosher, who prepares fresh cuisine utilizing local ingredients, many from the winery's own edible gardens. “This is a celebratory year for our festival, and we’ve evolved to a point where we can be creative with our programs, much like this premier garden tour,” said Executive Director Evie Ayers, who attributes the longevity of the organization to a variety of factors, including its winery (venue) partners who now view the festival as a permanent part of their support of the arts community in the Napa Valley. “We continue to develop creatively without losing sight of our unique intimacy and genuine connection with our patrons. Because of this, I look forward to seeing how we will evolve in another 25 years.” This year's celebratory Gardens in the Vineyards will take place in lieu of a 2019 Kitchens in the Vineyards, and much like the organization’s popular Preview Party, is expected to sell out quickly. Tickets cost $275 and can be purchased online, by phone, or by mail. The Music in the Vineyards 25th annual chamber music festival will run this summer from July 31 through August 25, featuring world-renowned artists performing new and classic chamber music repertoire in winery settings, with complimentary wine tasting at intermission. Proceeds from Gardens in the Vineyards will benefit the festival’s performance costs and community outreach programs. FOR MORE INFORMATION

A retired animal doctor returns to his homeland to create a luxurious frontier getaway for modern-day pioneers  BY ROBERT KAUFMAN

T

he Retreat & Links at Silvies Valley Ranch is located in such a remote corner of eastern Oregon, that even when your GPS indicates arrival, you will stare out both sides of the car to view endless acres of open land and ask, ‘Where is this place?’ Trust me, it exists. You just need to have your eyes open for the property’s lonesome wooden signboard to avoid speeding past the turnoff. Upon first glimpse of your final destination, you’ll immediately understand why Bruce, one of the ranch’s most revered employees, is living a dream life. I picked up on that right from the get-go when we became instant friends after showing up to play the 7-hole McVeigh’s Gauntlet Golf Course. Bruce LeGoat, heads a foursome of goat caddies including Mike LeChevon, Peanut LeGoat and Roundabout LaDoe, all equipped with specially-designed golf bags and as proud ambassadors for Silvies Valley Ranch they represent more than 2,500 American Range goats calling this 140,000-acre working cattle and hay ranch their home sweet home. But were it not for the vision of retired veterinarian, Scott Campbell, and his wife, Sandy, they’d all be searching for new grazing pastures.

NVL travel With family genealogy dating back to 19th century pioneer days in the Beaver State, the Campbells returned from Portland, Oregon to their native roots after amassing a fortune operating pet hospitals and began investing their resources toward developing and promoting this undiscovered region onto the tourism radar. Their ambitious efforts led to creating this destination eco-resort equidistant between Bend, Oregon and Boise, Idaho, which has already been firmly established as a unique getaway for guests in search of a frontier experience on an authentic Western cattle ranch. “We bought the land as a real estate investment since there wasn’t anyone exposing the beauty of this part of the state and I wanted to be an economic driver here,” said (Scott) Campbell, who, in 2007, purchased the expansive acreage in this high-desert meadow landscape where beaver were once the dominant inhabitant.

I realized my initial taste of the Campbell’s objectives immediately upon being welcomed to drive past the stonecolumn entry gate onto an unpaved road toward the main lodge where I traded in my bygone Honda for a battery-powered

Polaris RZR as my personal on-site transport, plus a 2-way radio to communicate throughout my visit bunking on the ranch. Within less than 24 hours, any sense of isolation from the outside world I feared experiencing completely vanished at first dawn sitting on my log cabin deck observing the coffee steam rise in sync with the ascending moisture off the adjacent pond and antelope wandering throughout an unobstructed playground. While there was no shortage of experiences to fill all my waking hours, I did manage to take advantage of a few such as golf (four courses to choose from, including the Hankins and Craddock

reversible 18-hole courses, the 9-hole Chief Egan par 3 layout and the 7-hole McVeigh’s Gauntlet), miles of trail biking, pistol and rifle shooting range, where I scored a rookie bulls-eye, and my tenderfoot attempt at axe throwing that turned out to be a far cry from what I witnessed Daniel Boone perform on TV when I was a kid. But whenever it was time to take cover, my sojourn at Silvies Valley Ranch was exceedingly enhanced by one of the luxurious 1,100-square-foot log cabins that can be divided into two units, one with a living room and hot tub on the patio. Plush with elaborate décor including fireplace, bedroom skylights, copper bathroom sinks, rain showers, and wall mounted flat screens, these quarters would be the envy of any time-traveling pioneer. “This area has always been used for logging and ranching, so we tried to match that architecture as much as possible,” said Tom Holgate, a longtime friend of the Campbells and Portland-based architect enlisted to renovate the pre-existing eight cabins, 24 ranch house guest rooms, design the new 17,000-square-foot Rocking Heart spa and have a hand with the 50 to 70 vacation homes expected to be built over the next five years. The original frontier foundation will be around ‘til the cows come home but for now, the Campbell’s “build it and they will come” approach with the Retreat & Links at Silvies Valley Ranch is luring modern-day explorers to lasso the Western mystique on a five-star scale. CHARITY BEGINS at HOME  BY RICH JACOBSON

I

f there’s one distinct characteristic to life in Napa Valley, other than superb wine, it would be the extraordinary generosity of its residents. In fact, having lived in four world renown cities prior to making my way to Napa in 2002, I would say the communities of the valley are THE most generous collection of individuals I have ever encountered. Just ask any retiree and they’ll tell you they are far busier with volunteering and helping various organizations than they ever were during their work careers! Financially speaking, many Napa Valley residents also like to give philanthropically, in addition to volunteering. Charitable giving is done for a variety of reasons. Some give because they feel attached to a cause (example: providing for the working poor or indigent among us). Others give because they or a loved one have been touched by a disease, like cancer. Still others give because they feel a fondness for an organization and its work, like the Kiwanis Club of Napa Foundation, that gives scholarship grants to Napa’s high school students. Regardless of the motivation, charitable giving has an immensely satisfying effect on one’s psyche and also can have significant financial benefits for the giver, as well. Under the new tax law, you are now permitted to deduct up to 60percent of your Adjusted Gross Income with cash donations, up from 50-percent previously. If you have appreciated stock you can gift the fair market value to charity, get a tax deduction for it and avoid having to claim the capital gains on your tax return. For those who are 70 and over, there is also the Qualified Charitable Distribution that can be done directly from one’s IRA to a charity that helps meet your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) requirement and avoids having that distribution impact your tax return.

Since tax reform resulted in a married couple’s standard deduction rising from $12,700 to $24,000 and State and Local tax deductions are now capped at $10,000, many people who formerly itemized their deductions will probably simply claim the standard deduction. However, charitable deductions are deductible only if one itemizes so it is more important than ever to think strategically about how you are giving, and when. For example, instead of continuing to give to charities a little at a time on an annual basis it may make sense to bunch several years of intended charitable giving into a single large donation- one that is large enough to provide a larger tax deduction through itemizing than by taking the standard deduction. Another strategy might be to consider using a Donor Advised Fund to make a single large tax-deductible contribution to a fund that the Donor still retains some control over. This allows the Donor to continue to make annual donations to charities of their choice, but to also reap the tax benefit of the single large Donor Advised Fund contribution. Remember, too, that by gifting directly from your IRA to a charity (age 70 ½ and over) or by gifting highly appreciated stock instead of cash, you may avoid increasing your taxable income, as reported on your tax return, and therefore keep other related taxes, like Medicare Part B and D premiums, lower than they might otherwise be. However you choose to give, it’s important to know that your gift will make a difference and actually better the lives of people around you. For this reason, it’s always a good idea to check your charitable organization out on charitynavigator.org.

REACH for the STARS RAISING MONEY FOR CANCER OUTREACH

C

ancer touches all of our lives. For those who are diagnosed, it is life-altering. Recognizing this, St. Joseph Health, Queen of the Valley Medical Center established Reach for the Stars, The Queen's Celebration in 1994. Held every year on the Saturday before Easter at Silverado Resort and Spa, it is slated this year for Saturday, April 20, and will once again celebrate the beauty and strength of cancer patients. This beloved event includes a fashion show featuring cancer survivors of all ages and in all stages of recovery. Children, women and men strut up and down the runway, dressed by Napa’s boutique retailers and fashionistas, showing off the moves they’ve perfected from weeks of practice. The energy in the sold-to-capacity room is palpable as the crowd cheers them on.

This year’s event will honor Gayle and Jack Daniels, Napa vintners and philanthropists. The day includes a reception, silent auction, and threecourse lunch. All the proceeds from the event, from its ticket sales to sales of its BuyA-Star tributes which honor cancer patients, provide support services for cancer patients, including fully funding participation in Queen of the Valley’s Cancer Wellness Program. The Cancer Wellness Program offers a personalized plan for exercise, nutritional counseling, and psychosocial and spiritual support in the journey to becoming a proactive cancer survivor. With a physician referral, the 12-week wellness program is available at no charge to all cancer patients who reside in the Napa Valley, regardless

of where they are being treated, and to all patients treated at the Queen, regardless of where they live. In 2018, the 1,000th cancer patient enrolled in the program and there have been more than 100 patients since, bringing the number of cancer patients who have benefited from this program to more than 1,100. What makes this event even more special are the volunteers who make it all happen. From the co-chairs, Myrna Andrews, Cindi Dwyer, Paige Smith and Toni Stergion, to the event committees, model coaches and dressers, Reach for the Stars is a Napa Valley communityfueled event. UP CLOSE & PE RSONAL WITH NAPA VALLE Y CHE FS

CHEF TOD KAWACHI Brings a Wealth of Experience “to the table” at St. Supéry  BY EVE BUSHMAN | PHOTOS BY MEG SMITH

With the St. Supéry garden at his fingertips, in addition to the best locally sourced fare, Chef Tod takes his years of culinary proficiency to a new level.

W

hat’s the key to culinary success? St. Supéry estate chef Tod Kawachi feels its organization and attention to detail both in life, and, in the kitchen. This idea is called ‘mise en plas’ meaning ‘everything in its place,’ and a way of life for this talented chef. Chef Tod, a Washington state native, has found his place at this respected Rutherford based winery, a producer of prized Bordeaux varietals and the perfect accompaniment to chef’s varied pairings. St. Supéry’s commitment to hospitality, its French Chateâux tradition and estate-grown wines pair well with Chef Tod’s culinary creativity. This begins when he “digs into” the winery’s private estate garden for fruits, herbs and vegetables. “I have the experience and confidence to create pairings that best showcase the wines and seasonality of the garden, and appreciate this creative freedom entrusted to me,” said Chef Tod respectfully. “The St. Supéry Estate culinary garden provides me with amazing produce, beyond which I source the best meats, poultry, cheese, and seafood from local artisan producers. You can taste the difference in dishes that utilizes vegetables, fruits, and herbs straight from our garden.” 88

NAPAVALLEYLIFE.COM

Imagine: It’s like cooking with Farmer’s Market fare every day. After graduating from culinary school in Seattle, Chef Tod began his career at Napa’s Domaine Chandon, moving on to Hotel Bel-Air, The Peninsula Beverly Hills Hotel and as executive chef at Roy’s Kahana Bar and Grill in Maui. He then returned to the Napa Valley, where he played an instrumental role in opening the acclaimed Brix Restaurant. Most recently, he served as associate professor/chef instructor at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone. “All of the roles I have held, and the places I have lived, contribute to who I am today,” said the charismatic chef. “And, I’m fortunate to have grown-up eating my family’s cultural foods - dishes prepared by my Japanese grandmother and by my Chinese uncles and aunts. This really influenced my cooking.” Chef Tod has been mentored by wellknown names in the restaurant scene such as Philippe Jeanty and Roy’s Roy Yamaguchi. He also appreciates the artistry of Single Thread’s Kyle Connaughton who expertly expresses within his cuisine his many years of training and travels.

Want more? Always at work developing new wine and food tasting experiences at St. Supéry, Chef Tod’s inspiration comes from his

mentors, but also from creating pairings that display how food, seasonings, and cooking methods can change how a wine may taste. The ‘Interactive Sensory Tasting Experience’ offered the first weekend of each month, provides a fun educational experience for both wine novices and experts. Following the winery tour, guests sit down to a tasting of four estate wines and learn how simple changes in spices, seasonings and sauces can alter and perfect the pairing. “When guests say they’ll soon be back to try another experience, I know we’ve made a lasting impression.” Maybe it’s time to get your own experience.

THE WINES OF ST. SUPÉRY While the focus of this article has been to spotlight our new chef, at St. Supéry the wine has always come first and foremost. Chef Tod enhances the 100 percent estate grown wines only from their Rutherford and Dollarhide Estates: Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and many red Bordeaux varietals such as Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Many of their certified Napa Green wines and California Green Medal winners have also garnered 90 points and above from Wine Spectator, James Suckling, Jeb Dunnuck, The Wine Advocate and Wine Enthusiast. Their current online library wines are available dating back to 2004. At St. Supéry there has, and always will be, pride in creating the very best wines possible, “with extensive investments in the vineyard, winery and technology over the last decade; the quality of the wines has never been better…”

SHACKFORD'S KITCHEN STORE A Lesson in Inventory Management and Retail Best Practices

Napa’s Shackford’s Kitchen Store’ new owners continue the tradition and commitment to providing cooks and chefs high value, reasonably priced products while offering a variety of kitchen tools to choose from. 90

NAPAVALLEYLIFE.COM

M

r. Shackford told the story of a University Professor coming to the store. This gentleman wondered out loud about how successful the store was. This professor taught retail marketing at a prestigious University and told Mr. Shackford that the store contradicted what he taught. The Professor said, “you have too many items, the aisles are too high, did you know the shelves are Pink, where did you buy these shelves.” Mr. Shackford thinks for a minute, and simply said “We give our

customers what they want at a fair price and have been doing it for a long time.” Regarding the shelves, Mr. Shackford built most of the shelves. Not much was thrown away. Return items were often cannibalized for parts. Need a stem for an old percolator? (that is the original pour over coffee maker,) let me check… They happen to have one. Starting a new job as a chef and need knives? Shackford’s can outfit a new chef with a working set of quality forged knives for under $100.

Shackford’s carries an amazing and broad array of products. The new owners, Patrick and Alix Merkley, plan to expand the variety of products offered while continuing to provide all the essential products that Napa residents have depended on. Picking the products depends on the Shackford’s team as well as customers telling them what they need. Shackford’s carries an enormous inventory, but will still order unique items at no additional charge if the customer wants something

not in the store. This dedication to customer service is so critical that the owners personally manage all special orders. The Shackford’s staff makes the store unique. Customer Service is a focal point of the staff’s activity. Front line staff work with customers to determine the best item and steer customers to the right part of the store. If we don’t have the item or the item is out of stock, they are vocal about advocating for the Shackford’s customers.

Shackford’s has two full-time Executive Chefs. These chef’s work with the products. In fact, all the products in the store will be used in the planned Demonstration Kitchen. New products will be tested to Mr. Shackford’s high standards before being put out for sale. Executive Chef and Owner Patrick Merkley comes to Shackfords with a broad business background, global exposure to food and years of catering and fine dining experience in the Valley. Executive Chef Alex comes to Shackford’s with service in top Michelin Starred restaurants such as Meadowood and Tra Vigne. Most recently, Chef Alex was

the Executive Chef at Peju Winery. Long time staff members are experienced and expert bakers and cooks. Members of the Shackford family still work at the store. Other staff come with experience in Retail Management, Food Service, Hospitality and wine sales. Mrs. Alix, as opposed to Chef Alex, has a background in home goods and residential/commercial interior design. All these people work to make sure Shackford’s has the tools the consumer wants, cooks work with and chef’s use. What is the coolest knife, what are the best gadgets, Food Processors, pots and pans? Why does one work better than the other? Is the higher priced item better? Why one non-stick pan over another? Shackford’s staff will answer your questions. Wandering around the store seems to be a favorite activity. Shackford’s is a culinary treasure hunt. Nobody buys just one thing. Shackford’s top selling items… Cake Boxes at $1.49 and Sodastream carbonation

cylinder at $15.99. Shackford’s most expensive product… Aura One Hand Forged Chef Knifes at $750. Why does Shackford’s continue to prove the Professor wrong… because Shackford’s has the right products for the right jobs and has the fun tools for the fun jobs. With the introduction of chefs into the store, the planned Demonstration Kitchen and other improvements, Shackford’s will continue to be the best cooking store in Napa. As the Demonstration Area is finished, Shackford’s will launch classes for adults and juniors focused on product and cooking demonstrations and possibly, the occasional Chef’s Knife fight. Shackford’s is a kitchen store run by cooks and chefs for cooks and chefs. Stop by, ask a question, try out a knife, find the perfect gift. Shackford’s, in one form or another, has been located at 1350 Main Street in Napa since the 1950’s.
