S
ome mark an anniversary or birthday by raising funds for a nonprofit, and that was how I celebrated a milestone last year—at a dinner in support of the Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry in Aurora. When attending fundraisers in Naperville, I tend to run into the same active members of the community. But this dinner offered me the opportunity to meet a wider network of suburban philanthropists, one of whom was Theodia Gillespie (above). Although familiar with the Urban League, I had little knowledge of the breadth and scope of the work the Quad County arm of the civil rights group does here. This month writer Lisa Arnett enlightens us all (p. 70).

’ve known Moran Cerf less than 24 hours when I start to worry he’s controlling my mind. To be fair, he’s been messing with my thoughts for a while before we finally sit down at Soho House in early December for drinks. Over the previous weeks, I’ve listened to him on podcasts and interviews as I’ve gone about my life. As I walk, headphoned, across the Northwestern campus where we both teach, I hear him talk about the possibility of directly connecting brains to machines. Cruising down the Edens, I hear him talk about influencing dreams through smells. Riding the moving walkway to Concourse C at O’Hare, I hear him wonder why April Fools’ Day is the one time when we treat the world with the skepticism it’s due. The 42-year-old neuroscientist has a 100-mile-an-hour French-Israeli accent, a gift for storytelling, and the ability to make me stop in the middle of the sidewalk and wonder if anything is real. One of the first things Cerf tells me, just minutes after we’ve greeted each other, is that when straight men and women shake hands upon meeting, they have a subconscious instinct to sniff their own hand afterward. (Keep in mind this was back in December, another human epoch.) This is regardless of whether the people are interested in each other, or whether one is 19 and the other 85. A gay man would sniff his hand after meeting another man, and so on. I’m smiling and nodding, asking follow-up questions, but I’m also racking my brain, trying to remember what I did after we shook hands.

o listen to political chatter is to hear one message: The November 3 presidential election is the “election of our lifetime.” Here are seven things to know about voting in 2020— especially knowing the coronavirus will impact how, when, and where we choose to vote.

In Will County, referendum questions will be posed to voters in Orland Park and Homer Township.
1. What’s on the ballot? Beyond the marquee Trump/Biden matchup, voters will choose whether to return Democrat Richard Durbin to the U.S. Senate for a fifth term or replace him with former Lake County sheriff Mark Curran, a Republican. Voters also will select U.S. representatives, state legislators, and county-level officials, as well as deciding whether to retain judges.
3. Are you registered? Confirm your voter status by checking with the DuPage Election Commission (dupageco .org/election) or the Will County clerk (thewillcountyclerk.com/elections). Registration can be completed online up to 15 days before the election; in-person or mail-in registrations must be completed 27 days in advance. Voters also may register at their polling place on Election Day.

USPS controversy Under newly appointed Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, the U.S. Postal Service this summer removed some mail-processing equipment and collection boxes, fueling concerns mailed ballots might be delayed and not counted. Facing public pressure, DeJoy in August froze operational changes—though he did not reverse previous actions. Voters can avoid delays by requesting and returning ballots as soon as possible. DuPage residents may hand-deliver ballots to drop boxes at the county complex or any early voting location. Will voters may drop their ballots in boxes at the clerk’s office, Naperville 95th Street Library, or libraries in six other towns.

FROM FIREWORKS TO FOREVER An Aurora couple celebrates their nuptials with a beautiful backyard bash By Lisa Arnett
S
ummer flings fizzle out for most, but not for Aurora residents Cathy Diaz and Xavier Garcia, both 27. They had briefly crossed paths as sophomores at Waubonsie Valley High School before Garcia transferred to Naperville North. Years later, they met at a mutual friend’s Fourth of July barbecue, and it wasn’t long before their summer romance blossomed into a serious relationship. Garcia, a writer, and Diaz, a service coordinator at Lisle nonprofit DayOne PACT, bonded over their shared love of gaming and spent their early dates playing Mario Kart and other Nintendo 64 faves from their childhood. “Instead of being forced to stare at each other across a table, [our conversation]

flowed naturally, and that’s how we’ve been ever since,” Garcia says. “We can do nothing together, we can do anything together, and it’ll lead into a conversation or complete silence and we will both be comfortable throughout.” After they discussed marriage as their next step, Diaz predicted a summertime proposal on their anniversary in 2019. So when Garcia proposed months earlier in January, she was caught completely off-guard. Garcia brought Diaz to her family’s church, Our Lady of Mercy in Aurora, under the guise of picking up her mother, and then popped the question right in the center aisle. “I let her walk in front of me and told her to stop and turn around and I was on one knee,” Garcia says.

And so, they planned to return to the church to marry on July 3, 2020. “We had a family friend offer their beautiful house and backyard in Oswego [for the reception],” Diaz says. “We thought about it, but eventually said no because we didn’t want to impose.” Instead, they fell in love with Elements at Water Street in Naperville and booked a 100-person reception. But when forced to cancel due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they had to make some tough decisions. “We had a conversation about what is important to us. It’s getting married in our church. As long as it’s on July 3, we are getting married, even if it’s just the two of us and our parents,” Garcia says. “The party part was just extra. We had set our hearts on not doing anything [for a reception] because it just wasn’t worth the headache.” When the state’s reopening plan began to allow small gatherings, they decided to plan an intimate reception for 30 with about a month to spare. Luckily, their friends’ offer to host in their backyard was still on the table. Their DJ was still available, and their florist reworked her designs to suit a
casual outdoor soiree. Diaz booked a taco bar, ordered cupcakes, and mined her forgotten “Backyard Wedding” Pinterest board for decor ideas. “It was everything I’ve ever wanted and ever imagined for my wedding, even though we had other plans,” she says.

This workout will increase your heart rate and improve muscle endurance, with no equipment needed—it’s all body-weight driven. Be sure to rest for 15 to 30 seconds between the exercises. WARM UP
Do 30 seconds of jumping jacks, then 30 seconds of high knees (sprint/run in place with knees raised to chest height). Then do 5 reps of walkouts, starting with feet hip-width apart. Bend from hips and place palms on the floor. Shift weight onto hands and walk them forward until body is in plank position. Walk hands back to start and repeat.
Keeping abs tight, step back with right foot and lower into a reverse lunge. Squeeze glutes as you push down through left heel and kick right leg in front of you as you straighten left leg. Do 10 reps, then repeat on other side, kicking left leg.

From a standing position, do 45 seconds of side stretches: Reach one arm up and over body, holding stretch, then switch sides. Then do 45 seconds of dynamic quad stretches: Reach behind one leg to grab hold of foot; push hip forward while lengthening quad. Finish with 45 seconds of toe touching, bending forward at the torso while letting fingers hang down toward toes.

HOPE IN A CRITICAL TIME A local nonprofit braces for a tough season ahead By Julie Duffin
H
ope’s Front Door in Downers Grove provides emergency assistance to some of the most vulnerable members of our community. This year, as the nonprofit celebrates its 20th anniversary, the need for its services is greater than ever. Hope’s Front Door often acts as a first responder to area residents facing a financial or medical crisis. When clients first arrive at Hope’s Front Door, many are either underemployed, unemployed, homeless, disabled, or senior citizens in need of support. Depending on their needs, clients receive food and transportation vouchers, help with acquiring prescription medication, and access to vision care and oral health providers. Once their immediate needs are met, clients are able to take advantage of the nonprofit’s education and self-sufficiency programs. “We help people move out of a crisis-to-crisis existence by providing tools and resources that empower them to make positive, long-lasting 22 OCTOBER 2020 / NAPERVILLEMAGAZINE.COM
changes for themselves and their families,” explains executive director Janell Robinson. Clients can take advantage of financial literacy programs, work with a career counselor, and learn about making healthy lifestyle choices. COVID’S IMPACT Like many nonprofits, COVID-19 has severely impacted the organization. “We’ve had to make some real changes in the way we provide services to maintain social distancing. Now, instead of meeting face-to-face, we talk with clients over the phone and offer onsite distribution for goods and vouchers,” Robinson explains. They also had to adjust to working with fewer volunteers. Once the $600 unemployment benefit ended, visits to Hope’s Front Door increased dramatically. “Generally we help 5,600 individuals and children throughout DuPage County a year. Based on what we saw during the 2008 recession, we conservatively expect to

see a 30 to 35 percent increase within the next 12 to 18 months,” Robinson points out. Once the moratorium on evictions ends and people lose their unemployment benefits, she expects the numbers to rise even higher. “It’s almost a perfect storm. We’re concerned it will be a really challenging fall and winter.” The increasing number of new clients also concerns Robinson. “We are seeing more and more folks who are new to us becoming financially insecure,” she states. Based on the 2008 recession, Robinson projects they could see up to 40 new households each month. She points out that for some people, it could be 24 months before they truly get back to where they were before COVID. Regardless, Robinson remains hopeful the government will offer more financial assistance to those in need. “People often feel disconnected and invisible during a financial crisis. It’s disheartening that we can’t meet faceto-face with people, but were able to talk with them on the phone and just listen,” she explains. “Our mission is to help people weather these types of storms, whether it’s due to a person crisis, a recession, or a pandemic. Having a listening ear is just as important as financial and educational assistance.” Robinson has worked at the Downers Grove nonprofit for the past 18 years. “I love what I do and I am tremendously proud and honored that folks really trust us to share their story. We must be doing something right if folks feel comfortable telling us what’s going on in their lives. And at the same time they also call and tell us when they’ve been successful because they want us to know they’re doing well. This crisis has impacted everyone, regardless of income or education. If we keep the mindset that we’re in this together as a community, I don’t think it’s beyond us to be able to help those who are struggling as a result of the pandemic.”

he Edward Foundation raised $403,000 at its 27th annual Charity Golf Tournament on August 31 at Cog Hill Golf and Country Club in Palos Park—a historic public club with four challenging courses, including the storied shot-maker Dubsdread. More than 300 golfers donated funds through sponsorships, donations, raffles, and games, including a Million Dollar Shoot Out where three golfers were randomly selected to attempt a hole in one for $1 million. ABC-7’s sports anchor and reporter Dionne Miller was the event’s celebrity guest. After enjoying unlimited food and drinks on the courses, the winning team on Cog Hill’s Dubsdread course included Andrew Baasen, Justin Kochen, Teresa McDaniel, and Charles Glaser. The winning team on Cog Hill’s Course No. 1 included Steve Campanella, Kevin Kethcart, Mike Minetti, and Steve Moudry. All proceeds from the golf outing and gala this year will be directed to Edward Foundation’s COVID-19 Relief Fund, which supports financial needs due to the pandemic—including personal protective equipment and screening stations to keep patients, physicians, and staff safe.

SHAKE IT UP Nutrition Hub’s sixth location offers protein shakes, teas, and wellness coaching By Emma Jackson
W
hen Sam Suleiman took the first step into changing his lifestyle and health habits, he never thought it would lead him to becoming part owner of a nutrition bar. He had spent the last decade working in the seafood industry—and was drinking and smoking and had some weight to lose. He began researching different methods of weight loss and came across a protein shake store that one of his friends owns in Indiana. “I lost 46 pounds and never felt like I lost the weight too quickly or lost vitamins and muscle,” Suleiman says. He was hooked. He then spent a lot of time studying how protein shakes can help with weight loss and gain, and frequently visited Nutrition Hub, a bar serving shakes, smoothie bowls, 34 OCTOBER 2020 / NAPERVILLEMAGAZINE.COM
and teas in Frankfort. He was inspired to open up a Nutrition Hub of his own in his hometown of New Lenox in November 2019, and just opened up the doors to the downtown Naperville location in September. I called the landlord and asked to see the space and I signed the lease right there. I couldn’t resist.”

SAVORY SIPS AND SONGS Revel in delightful outdoor dining and music at Preservation in Geneva By Lisa Arnett
A
t Third Street’s north end in downtown Geneva you’ll find what might be one of the coziest alfresco hideaways in the suburbs. Just walk down the ivy-covered alley between wine bar Preservation and sandwich shop Atlas Chicken Shack. When you see the pergola-covered bar and trees strung with cafe lights, you’ve arrived. Though you won’t see the name in prominent signage, it’s called Social Bar, says Lawrence Colburn, who owns both Preservation (513 S. 3rd St., 630.208.1588, preservationgeneva .com) and Atlas Chicken Shack (511 S. 3rd St., 331.248.0592, atlaschickenshack.com). Here, diners can order off Preservation’s menu or from the walk-up window at Atlas. Both restaurants have had their own outdoor seating (a sunken stone patio and umbrel40 OCTOBER 2020 / NAPERVILLEMAGAZINE.COM
la-topped picnic tables, respectively) for years, but Social Bar made its warmweather debut last summer. Squeezing in shoulder to shoulder at the bar or dropping in on a whim, though, are vestiges of the past, at least for now. To reduce crowding, reservations are required and tables are safely spaced the requisite six feet apart. GOOD TO GRAZE Preservation’s food menu is eclectic and conducive to grazing. Cheese and charcuterie boards are a specialty here—made infinitely clear not just by Colburn saying so, but also by the frequency they passed by my table in the hands of servers, making their way to awaiting diners. Colburn and chef Scott Nickell’s skills for sourcing impeccable imported meats and cheeses shines in
other dishes, too. The sheep’s milk blue cheese from Wisconsin-based Belgioioso that accompanied the tender steak skewers was so buttery and mild that it made converts out of me and my date, both longtime blue cheese haters. Delicate slices of ham from Indianapolis maker Smoking Goose topped off layers of smoked pork, melty Swiss cheese, and crunchy pickle slices on a crunchy baguette in the Cubano. The Korean pork belly tacos, a recent addition to the menu, tingle all the right taste buds with chili aïoli, tangy kimchi, and crunchy carrot spears, all wrapped up in griddled tortillas. I also tried the cheddar biscuit topped with pulled chicken and tomatillo sauce, but wasn’t a fan; next time I’ll save room for a fried chicken sandwich from Atlas instead.

VINE TIMES Before opening these two restaurants, Colburn worked as a sommelier, so it’s pretty much impossible to go wrong with wine here. “We have a very European and Old World approach to wine, where we really prefer wines that are more highly acidic, not as heavy, more of what I would call drinkable wines,” Colburn says. White fans should consider the citrusy 2018 pinot gris from the Eyrie Vineyards in Oregon or Domaine de Montorge’s 2016 Montagny 1er Cru, a mineral-forward Chardonnay that feels just right for fall nights. If you’re craving a red, try the 2016 Syrah blend from Mas de Gourgonnier, a winery in Provence that’s been making organic wines since the ’70s. There’s live music seven nights a week (including singer-songwriter night on Mondays) and enough heaters to extend patio season well into the winter. In the mask-free moments when you’re savoring a sip to the strum of acoustic guitar under the glowing string lights, it almost feels—dare I say it—like a slice of prepandemic normalcy.

Despite 2020’s challenges, the QCUL forges on Social programs, public policy, education, job training, housing and community development, entrepreneurship, quality of life—the work of the Aurora nonprofit is as varied as the people it serves. Naperville magazine sat down with president and CEO Theodia Gillespie to discuss her mission, her vision, and the injustices brought to light in recent months, all in the midst of a global pandemic. he growing momentum behind the Black Lives Matter movement this summer has served as a powerful reminder of the injustice plaguing our communities. “George Floyd was the match that ignited the flame,” says Theodia Gillespie, president and CEO of Aurora’s Quad County Urban League. “These conditions [of inequality] have existed for a long time. What Urban Leagues … are working on is to … have policy and things in place so our children and our grandchildren do not have to experience what has happened in the last five months.” That work has been long-standing, both locally and nationally. The Quad County Urban League was founded in 1975 to support civil rights, racial justice, and economic empowerment for African Americans and other people of color in DuPage, Kane, Will, and Kendall Counties. The QCUL is one of 90 organizations under the umbrella of the National Urban League, a historic civil rights organization dedicated to equality and social justice since its founding in 1910. Gillespie started working for the QCUL in 1984 after studying social work and psychology at Southeast Missouri State University. She started in the education department, working on a program called Tomorrow’s Scientists, Technicians and Managers, which exposes minority middle and high school students to careers in math, science, technology, and business through field trips, projects, and study sessions. TSTM is just one program in the league’s varied lineup of services, which range from employment assistance and financial literacy education for adults to tutoring and college-prep programs for students. “[TSTM] was exciting for me because it allowed me to really expose young people to careers they were not as comfortable with

“We are not just for low-income individuals. Yes, we are here to help those who are down and out, but we are also here to provide that support for those individuals who may just need a little more push and support to get to the next level of their lives and their careers.”
and probably didn’t think they could pursue,” Gillespie says. She moved to St. Louis for two years before returning to Aurora and the QCUL in 1987—and she’s been there ever since. “I feel that I’m doing good and that’s what I need to be doing,” Gillespie says. “I worked my way up from education coordinator to program director, and from there I became president and CEO.” The league has remained committed to its original mission. “Everything we do at the Urban League is: How can we make a difference for individual lives and for their family and what they can contribute back to their community?” Gillespie says. “It’s about giving them the tools and resources to take care of their family and invest in the community in which they live. That’s my life.” Gillespie also serves on the boards of a number of local organizations, including the Marie Wilkinson Food Pantry, the Waubonsee Foundation, the Fox Valley Park Foundation, Amita Health Mercy Medical Center Aurora, and the Dunham Fund. “It’s been my focus to partner with organizations that have similar goals and objectives as the Urban League to help individuals by providing the resources and the tools they need to be successful,” Gillespie says. Together with local corporate partners, the league offers a number of job-training programs. Every spring, ComEd and Nicor sponsor Construct, a nine-week training program to prep participants for entry-level jobs in utilities, technology, Construction, and related fields. Every fall the six-week Nicor Gas Career Academy prepares participants for careers in the utility industry, and Propel by Prologis does the same for the logistics industry. The latest Construct program was just a few weeks underway when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Starting in February, participants were meeting Monday through Thursday for coursework in math, mechanical concepts, and other industry-specific skills. On Fridays, NAPERVILLEMAGAZINE.COM / OCTOBER 2020 73
they attended events with partnered companies to learn about job requirements, interviewing, and résumé writing. “Once the pandemic happened, our events and stuff, they came to a halt,” says Construct participant Chaz Smith, 37. The league had to quickly pivot to virtual instruction for the program. “They provided us all laptops and we attended online classes every day,” Smith says. “We kept the ball rolling, we met every day, we studied online. We didn’t miss a beat.” Smith enrolled in the program to transition to a career with more long-term stability. “I spent a lot of time working in steel mills, which was a nonunion job. I was living week to week, check to check,” he says. Shortly after Smith started the Construct program, he lost his job as a warehouse worker due to pandemic-related layoffs. “[The QCUL] offered a lot of relief. They offered grocery cards; they paid my phone bill,” Smith says. “I was waiting for unemployment for almost a month because everything was so backed up. The program was really there for me.” Shortly after Construct ended this summer, Smith was hired as a civil Construction laborer for a ComEd subsidiary. “I have never been in a union before; I have great benefits and I pay into the union retirement plan,” he says. “I have a level of comfort now and I know that I’m not going to fall down to minimum wage again. This is definitely a career.” In a year that has already brought so much hardship, Smith feels encouraged to be starting a new chapter. “We are in a pandemic; 2020 has been terrible so far,” Smith says. “But honestly, I feel like I’m having a great year. I put in hard work in every day. I never missed a class, and it really paid off.” Despite the pandemic, fall is always a busy season for the QCUL. As of presstime, Gillespie was looking forward to its sixth annual Women’s 74 OCTOBER 2020 / NAPERVILLEMAGAZINE.COM

“When the pandemic really hit, I was laid off from [my job.] I was really in a bind. You get kind of low, thinking, ‘What am I going to do?’ Money is not coming in anymore. I can’t go get a job; everyone is laid off and it’s quarantine. I was really depending on the program.”
Empowerment Summit, which this year featured keynote speakers and fireside chats in a virtual format on September 17. The event also spotlighted more than a dozen local residents as Women of Power Honorees, including state comptroller Susana Mendoza, Wheaton College chief intercultural engagement officer Sheila Caldwell, and Cook County Young Democrats chairwoman Chakena Sims. Like many nonprofit organizations, the QCUL relies on an annual gala fundraiser to fuel its operating budget. Instead of hosting the Annual Equity Gala—a black-tie event that typically brings in about $200,000 in donations—in late October at a local hotel, the QCUL is planning a virtual fundraiser on October 24 to celebrate its 45 years of service with the help of sponsors. Individual tickets start at $75 and are available online at qcul.org. The organization is always seeking new volunteers to assist with everything from career coaching to mentoring. This fall, volunteers are especially needed to support two crucial initiatives, Gillespie says. The first is voter registration and voter education in preparation for the November 3 general election. “This is a heavy part of our civil rights arm,” Gillespie says. “We want people to understand their [voting] rights and what they need to do to exercise that right.” The second need is tutors for school-aged children and young adults. “The biggest concern we have right now is the impact on our children of color in terms of the education gap,” she says. “We would like to get more individuals to volunteer to tutor and help parents with education instruction that children will need during this time. Remote learning is going to have a huge impact on communities of color. I’m really concerned about the African American community the most, because the gap is wider for us than any other ethnic group.” Prospective volunteers can fill out a form online at visit qcul.org/get-involved.

DON GINGOLD Your “Ghost Host” again takes the outdoor stage as emcee for a Summer Place Theatre autumn tradition Interview by Mark Loehrke CONJURING SCARES IN AN ALREADY SCARY WORLD We like to focus on things that are very escapist—ghosts and monsters and things like that—as opposed to some kind of apocalyptic or viral story. We don’t need to use reality to scare people right now— it’s scary enough. READING THE ROOM Even though some of our shows are G-rated while others are PG-13 for older kids, we still get some smaller kids at the later shows. But the nice thing about even some of the more intense stories is that at the end, our storyteller always gives a sly little smile so the audience knows that the tale has concluded, the twist has been sprung, and everything is fine. A THEATRICAL LIFELINE The rest of the Summer Place world has been upended and canceled entirely for the time being. But storytelling really lends itself well to spacing people out and being outside and keeping everything really safe. So we’re looking forward to providing people with a little bit of relief and a creative outlet for getting away from their day-to-day pandemic concerns.
