Quake '31 We have four programmes available for different age groups. All include a visit to our 1931 Earthquake exhibition.
Māui and Te Ao Māori
Quake ’31: The day that rocked Thomas’s world
Years 1 - 4
Thomas’s birthday started well until the solid ground beneath his school began to rock and roll. It was the day of the 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake and Thomas’s hometown would never be the same again. Thomas's story is told using a unique Kamishiabai story theatre box. A visit to the earthquake exhibition follows the story session, where students will see real items from the earthquake, some featured in the story.
Quake ’31: Resilience / Citizenship / Our Place
Years 4 - 8
Let us know your focus for a programme based on the events, causes and consequences of the 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake. Alternatively, book our standard programme: After a short participatory drama, students hear stories of the heroism and determination of ordinary people caught up in a catastrophic situation. A visit to the exhibition and an interactive game highlight the need for preparedness and resourcefulness in difficult times.
When Māui, legendary demigod and mischiefmaker, fished up the North Island from under the sea, his enchanted hook became our coastline – from Napier to Mahia Peninsula. Drawing on the stories and taonga of Ngāti Kahungunu, we explore the beliefs, culture and everyday lives of local people in earlier times. We look at ocean voyaging and explore the connections between the ancient Polynesian world of the movie Moana and the Māori world, te ao Māori. Years: Dates: Duration: Venue: Learning Areas:

NEW! Quake ’31: Breaking News! Years 5 – 8 Travel back in time to arrive in Hawke’s Bay moments before the 1931 earthquake. Team up to report live from the scene as the disaster unfolds. Drawing on images and stories in the museum’s earthquake exhibition and archives, students research details of what happened on the day and collaborate creatively to record ‘eye witness’ accounts that can be edited into a full TV news report back at school.
Quake ’31: Senior curriculum support
Years 9 - 13
Use our 1931 Earthquake exhibition and presentation… • As part of research for the Level 1 NZQA Geography external paper AS 91007 • As inspiration for creative writing, dance, art, music or drama • To support the History and Art History curriculum. Depending on your focus and the time available, we offer a choice of activities after the main programme and exhibition visit, e.g. a class survival game on the interactive board, a short walk around the block to see sites discussed in the programme, or exploration of art deco design.
Out and About on Marine Parade Marine Parade was once a dirt track. How did it get to be the way it is today? Where was Hukarere Pa? Who were the Clive flood heroes? Starting at MTG, collect a class set of maps, hi-vis vests and activity booklets containing historic images from MTG's archives. George Nuku – Bottled Ocean
Napier Port: Pilots and Wharfies
Based in France, artist George Nuku is coming home to Heretaunga for a month, and will be bringing his internationally successful ‘Bottled Ocean’ project with him. George uses his skills as a carver to sculpt aquatic artworks out of recycled plastic bottles, creating a captivating underwater world with a powerful message about the impact of plastic in the moana. Workshops and exhibition visits are available in two stages: 1. Participatory workshops led by George for local school classes (Year 4+) at MTG: Monday, 6 August - Friday, 17 August. Free of charge, expressions of interest to education@mtghawkesbay.com. 2. Exhibition visits as MTG education programme: Monday, 27 August onwards. Students enjoy the finished exhibition, learn about the art-making process, and finish by recording their responses to what they have seen. Usual costs apply.

House of Webb: A Victorian family’s voyage to Ormondville Junior programme: Meet the Webb family, who journeyed from Stockingford Vicarage, England in 1884 to Ormondville, New Zealand. Hear stories of their life in England, leaving home, life on board ship, arrival to Napier and the beginning of their life in a new country. Dress up in the clothes the children may have worn, role-play some of the everyday chores the children would have done like butter churning, ironing, and washing. Find out what life was like without electricity and visit the exhibition about the Webbs.
Senior programme: The Webb family, like all migrants, faced enormous challenges when they came from England to start a new life in Hawke’s Bay in the 1880s. Exploring their letters, diaries, sketches and other primary source materials will offer students vivid insights into the family’s personal experiences as 19th century migrants, detailing their departure, the sea voyage, arrival in Napier and the impact of European settlement on the Seventy Mile Bush surrounding their new home in Ormondville.
