Autumn at the museum Cooler days herald a change of season and some changes at MTG Hawke’s Bay too. Our Taonga Māori Gallery has new artefacts on display as well as several new videos, and two brand new exhibitions have recently opened. Discover a snapshot of the region’s maritime history in Steadfast Steamers: Models of Hawke’s Bay Shipping, showcasing four scale models of ships that date from the nineteenth century. Proving very popular is an exhibition dedicated to a local success story. Nyree Dawn Porter: From Local Stage to Global Stardom profiles Napier ballet teacher and television star who found fame abroad. Remember, admission is now free for all so you can visit us as often as you like, perhaps for a flying visit when you’ve got a few spare moments or for an extended period of time when you’re in no hurry. The museum is yours to enjoy – make the most of the region’s cultural treasure trove!

Crombie Gallery Until June 2018
Alluring photographs and video works from internationally renowned artist Yuki Kihara place the symbolic figure of Salome in the landscape of Ngāti Kahungunu ki Heretaunga: Hawke’s Bay. Kihara was inspired to set her works in this region after reading an account of the great migratory waka Takitimu, describing how it was built in the artist’s homeland of Sāmoa many generations before, carrying ancestors of Ngāti Kahungunu to Aotearoa. Salome is seen visiting various sites of layered historical and contemporary significance, exploring connections between local tangata whenua and the people of Sāmoa while critiquing colonial systems.

NYRE E DAWN PORTE R: FROM
Malden Gallery Until September 2018
As a teenager in the 1950’s, Nyree Dawn Porter inspired her ballet students by painting graceful dancers directly onto the living room walls of her family’s Napier home, where she held lessons. Nyree Dawn Porter: From Local Stage to Global Stardom is your chance to follow Nyree’s journey to international success in theatre, film and television. Nyree’s talents in performance won her the Miss Cinema competition, which led to a trip to London for a screen test. After making her mark in the UK theatre scene, she became a television star in the BBC production of The Forsyte Saga, watched by millions around the world.
Later in her career, Nyree received an OBE for services to film and television, and was the subject of a This is Your Life episode in the United Kingdom. She continued performing right up until her unexpected death in 2001, at the age of 61. The exhibition showcases Nyree’s preserved paintings, photos and newspaper clippings of her success along with excerpts from The Forsyte Saga on screen. A ballet barre and costumes inspired by Nyree’s paintings are also available for people of all ages to dress up and strike a pose. Nyree Dawn Porter was an inspiring woman who went from local stage to global stardom – come and share her story of success…

Arnott Gallery Until July 2018
Traversing 100 years of Ngāti Kahungunu’s He Manu Tīoriori features church and brass band influences through to parlour music, ragtime, jazz, rock and roll as well as country and western. The exhibition explores how Ngāti Kahungunu has been at the forefront of it all, from the Māori Jazz Orchestras of the 1920’s and 1930’s through to the emergence of the Māori Showband era of the 1960’s and 1970’s. He Manu Tīoriori portrays a diversion from, and return to, traditional styles culminating with Te Matatini, hosted by Ngāti Kahungunu in February 2017.

Taonga Māori Gallery Ongoing
This stunning exhibition features a broad range of historic and contemporary taonga from the collection of the Hawke’s Bay Museums Trust, Ruawharo Tā-ū-rangi. Translated as ‘always here’, Tēnei Tonu shares diverse stories of local Iwi Ngāti Kahungunu and their enduring connection to the land. Ten taonga riri (weapons) have recently come out of storage and are now on display – some have not been exhibited for over 100 years! They are representative of the nearly 200 taiaha and tewhatewha held in the collection. Ranging from pre-contact through to the 1940s, they show a variety of styles and materials. One of the items on display is a beautiful whale-bone taiaha, and if you look closely you will see one eye has been rimmed with red wax and the other with paua – making for a unique finished look. Another has a noticeable bulge in the binding. We know from other museums (which have X-rayed similar taonga) that items such as teeth or pounamu can be held within this wrapping – one day the mystery of this taiaha may be revealed!
