SAHAYOG - A unique initiative Students understandably pursue undergraduate courses with an aim of landing good jobs. But once the coveted degree certificate is in hand, they realise soon enough that jobs are not so easy to come by. It is common knowledge that unemployment is not so much because there are no jobs, but it has something to do with the graduates lacking certain crucial skills rendering them unemployable. For the first time in the history of collegiate education, Honorable minister for Higher Education, Sri Aravind Limbavalli has initiated Sahayog, a novel scheme to impart skills to enhance employability among government college students. Corporate training companies have been roped in to train final year students. The 100-120 hour training includes development of soft skills, spoken English, computer literacy and job skills. Training fee is paid by Karnataka Vocational Training and Skill Development Corporation (KVTSDC) and computers to colleges for the purpose is being provided by Karnataka Knowledge Commission (KKC). The students need to pay only Rs. 100 for enrolment. Under the able leadership of the Commissioner of Collegiate Education, Dr. N. Nagambika Devi the department has left no stones unturned to kickstart this programme. As a pilot project almost 10,000 students from 120 colleges in 22 districts are being trained this year. This will be followed by job fairs that will be organized at different places. Already a job fair at R.C. College Bangalore, in January yielded 1,500 job offers. It is hoped that most students will be placed in the coming such events. The success of this programme can be seen in the new found confidence and zeal in these government college students. These bright young faces only inspires the department to take this programme to its next logical step – to extend this training to all the government colleges in the coming years. Dr. Manika Ghosh., Special Officer, Department of Collegiate Education, Bengaluru.
