How To Prepare for Civil Services Aptitude Test , 2011 The difference between success and failure is doing a thing nearly right and doing a thing exactly right. Persistence gives confidence and continued right mental attitude followed by consistent action will bring success. The civil services require a candidate who has the clarity of vision and tenacity in efforts. The modern administrative systems face multiple push and pulls from different directions and challenges are truly diverse in character. As the nature of challenges take new shape, the bureaucratic mechanism has to adapt itself to perform its roles and responsibilities effectively. The UPSC is making continuous efforts to improve the selection process and that is why the syllabus of Civil services Examination has been changed thrice during the last decade. The Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) was initially proposed in the Report of the Civil Services Examination Review Committee, 2001, also known as the Professor Y. K. Alagh Committee Report. The committee, after its study of the officers selected, concluded that a mismatch exists between the “Suitability or Aptitude of Civil Servants and the Needs of Services”. Taking a step in the right direction, the Government has finally decided to introduce the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) to recruit Civil Servants in the forthcoming examination. The new pattern of examination aims to test a candidate from the ethical and moral dimensions of civil services, that is, whether he or she has the aptitude to become a part of the steel frame of India. People looking for easy fame, money and power will be filtered out. It is specifically meant to prevent their entry into civil services. The recent change in the pattern of civil services examination must be seen in the same light. Today the students are facing immense problem because no detailed guidelines have been released and some of the topics are entirely. Everybody wants to know what is CSAT and how to prepare CSAT. We have discussed the issue of CSAT with many of the eminent persons associated with Civil Services Examination, some are associated with UPSC in different capacities and on the basis of these interactions it has come to light that CSAT is neither CAT nor Bank PO. The questions will have similarities with CAT but context and outlook of the problems would be revolving around the civil services arena. For Math‟s that is Quantitative Aptitude get your self a book i.e., K. Kundan and M. Tyra. It‟s on basic mathematics and quantitative. Start with number system...because that‟s for sure in course and wait for the sample paper to release for more detailed topics. For the students good with Math‟s refer to quantitative Math‟s for cat by Arun Sharma but strictly stick to the basic topics. Do not go deep into it.

Note:

All the CSAT aspirants are recommended to

by Norman Lewis. It‟s simply the marvelous book. Book says finish it in 3 months but you can finish it in 15 days. Do exactly the way book says except the time frame. At the end of the book you will be master in around 3000 new words not the meaning but the usage.

Civil service aspirants to be tested for their aptitude rather than their memory. The Union Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions Ministry has announced changes in the pattern of the Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2011. A statement issued on Monday said the examination will consist of two papers. Paper I and II are each worth 100 marks and have been allotted two hours each. In Paper I, candidates will be tested on their knowledge of Current Events of national and international importance, Indian History, the Indian National Movement, Indian and world Geography, including the physical, social and Economic Geography of India and the world. Questions will also be asked on the Indian Polity and governance as well as the Constitution, the political system, panchayati raj, public policy and rights. Candidates will have to be prepared for questions on economic and social development, sustainable development, poverty, inclusion, demographics and social sector initiatives. Questions related to general issues on environmental ecology, bio-diversity, climate change and general science will also be posed. FORTNIGHTLY NEWSLETTER  FEB 15, 2011  PAGE 3

What is Aptitude The pattern of IAS Prelims examination has been restructured to test the aptitude of the aspirants so that problems related to mismatch in administrative mechanism can be avoided. What comes as a surprise is that most of the aspirants are not even aware of the meaning of the aptitude. The word aptitude is derived from the word Aptos which means “fit for”. Aptitude is the sum of capacity and interest of an individual. Aptitude is also the aptness or quickness to succeed in a specific field of activity. It is a present condition that is indicative of individual's potentialities for future. Your aptitude is your inherent capacity, talent or ability to do something. Aptitude is a set of characteristics symptomatic of an individual's ability to acquire with training, some specific field of knowledge, skill or set of responses. In short aptitude is latent potentialities or undeveloped capacities to acquire abilities and skills and to demonstrate achievements. FORTNIGHTLY NEWSLETTER  FEB 15, 2011  PAGE 4
