EMPHATIC COMMUNICATION In our day-to-day life we employ 4 basic types of communication. They are: 01. 02. 03. 04.

Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.

We know, we have spent hours/years to learn the first three types of communication ie., Reading, Writing and Speaking. But, how many hours/years we have spent to learn the Art of Listening? And how important is listening? Do we really listen to others? Generally, we never listen. We never understand what’s going on inside another human being. We always want to project our own autobiography. Hence, we usually ‘listen’ at one of the following 4 levels: 01. We may be ignoring another person, not really listening at all. 02. We may practice pretending “yeah, uh..uh, Right” etc.,

03. We may practice selective listening, hearing only certain parts of the conversation. 04. We may practice attentive listening, paying attention and focusing energy on the words that are being said. Instead, of all the above 4 levels, we need the highest form of listening also known as 5th level of listening ie., ‘Emphatic Listening’. In Emphatic Listening – you see the world the way the person to whom you are listening, see the world, you can understand how he/she feels. While doing so, as is being rightly said by Stephen R Covey, one should know that Empathy is not Sympathy. Sympathy is a form of agreement, a form of judgment. The people who feed on Sympathy become dependent. While in Emphatic Listening, it is not that you agree with some-one, it is that you fully, deeply, understand that person – emotionally as well as intellectually. This gives accurate data. Instead of projecting your own autobiography and assuming thoughts, feelings, motives & interpretation, you are dealing with the reality inside another person’s head & heart- you are listening to understand. Emphatic listening takes time, but definitely it doesn’t take as much time required to correct the mistakes or mis-understandings happened due to non-emphatic listening. “Seeking to understand requires consideration Seeking to be understood takes courage” -Prof.A.Narayana Prasad.,
