Civil Services Examination, 2010 Dear Students, Civil Services Examinations for various Government jobs in the country are being conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Out of the 24 services of Government of India and Union Territories, the most ambitious posts are Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS) etc. UPSC conducts Civil Services Exams every year in two rounds. : Preliminary & Mains. The preliminary examination is conducted in a number of cities throughout the country. Those who qualify in the preliminary round are called for mains examination. Preliminary Exam consists of a written exam while Mains exam consists of a written exams as well as Interview.

PATTERN OF PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION There will be 2 papers consisting of multiple choice questions.: Paper 1: General Studies-150 marks – time limit 2 hrs. Total 450 marks of Objective type Questions Paper 2: Optional Subject-300 marks – time limit 2 hrs. There will be 4 options to each question. Optional Subject is to be chosen from a list given in page 2. Details of the exams & syllabus for both the papers are given in the following website. There will be a penalty (Negative Marking) for wrong answers marked by a candidate in the Objective Type Question Papers.

Website:www.upsc.gov.in & Notification No.04/2010-CSP dated 02-01-2010 HOW TO APPLY Candidates must apply in the Common Application Form devised by the Commission for its examination, which can be purchased from the Designated Head Post Offices/Post Offices throughout the country against cash payment of Rs. 20/- (Rupees Twenty only).

LAST DATE FOR RECEIPT OF APPLICATIONS All applications must reach the "Secretary, Union Public Service Commission, Dholpur House, Shahjahan Road, New Delhi - 110069" either by hand or by Post/Speed Post or by Courier, on or before the 1st February, 2010.

DATE OF EXAMINATION Preliminary Examination of the Civil Services Examination, 2010 will be held on the 23rd May , 2010.

Centres of Examination in Karnataka: BANGALORE (03) , DHARWAD (39).

AGE LIMIT 21-30 years as on 1st August 2010.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION ALONG WITH THEIR CODES Degree of a Recognised University or equivalent (01) and Candidates appearing in the requisite Degree qualification (02) are also eligible for appearing in the examination; however, they are supposed to submit proof of passing the requisite qualification along with detailed Application Form for CS (Main) Exam.

EXAMINATION FEE A fee of Rs. 50.00 (Rupees Fifty only) through a single Central Recruitment Fee Stamp(NOT postage stamps) may be obtained from the post office and affixed on the application form in the space provided therein. The stamp must be got cancelled from the issuing Post Office with the date stamp of the post office.

Even though large no. of candidates appear for this exam thru out the country and no. of posts are limited, till now, many students both from Rural and Urban areas have passed this exam by putting in 100% dedication. INTERVIEWS – ROLE OF COMMUNICATION Round 01. Group Discussion: Group Discussion or GD is not just talking about a given topic or expressing one’s version, but, it’s all about communicating with a group of people. A candidate is tested in terms of group behaviour, communication skills, content collection and leadership attributes. Round 02. Subject/Technical Interview: Candidate’s Technical/subject competence, strategies, professional skills, his/her projects, assignments, earlier experiences, creativity, initiative, drive, interest in the subject and improving knowledge etc., will tested in depth by a team of technical experts or subject matter specialists of the organization. The candidate’s concepts and mindset will also be judged. Round 03. Personal Interview: Personal Interview is conducted by the human resource department of the company. Rehears yourself, two or three days, before attending the interview. Build your self-esteem and confidence. This includes your strengths and weaknesses, your accomplishments, reviewing your strong and weak subjects and recording some of the key decisions you have made in your life. You should also review interests, the disappointments you have encountered in the past, your work environment, likes and dislikes, your business and personal values, human values and ethics, your goals, needs, restrictions and life style preferences. How to write effective e-mails 04. Using EOM Headlines When you have a very short message to convey, you can use the EOM, or End Of Message, technique. This is possible when you can put all the relevant information in the subject line, followed by the letters "EOM".
