t’s not easy for Mark White to turn down an opportunity to engage in some aspect of theater, especially when it involves a challenge like directing the Theatre Workshop’s upcoming and complex farce “Noises Off,” which opens on May 11 in Bennett Hall. A play within a play written in 1982 by Michael Frayn, the hilarious story revolves around an ambitious director and his troupe of mediocre actors putting together a sexy performance called “Nothing On.” There is plenty of door slamming, clothes being tossed

about and embarrassing antics as the play turns into a disaster. White describes it as “an airplane trip.” “It’s two plays in one,” he said, admiring the talent of set designer and builder Eric Schultz, who has created a clever, revolving stage. “The first act is the take off — the final dress rehearsal for “Nothing On.” They open that night and are quite frustrated. Act Two is the
flight, when they watch the running of the play from backstage. In the third act they try to avoid a crash. All they want is to be safely on the ground and be done with this. “It’s a tribute to theater. In many, many ways it is the most complicated and maybe the funniest play ever written. It’s like the Goliath of shows.” Besides being on the Theatre Workshop board, White also directs plays for the Nantucket High School

CONVERSATIONS MARK WHITE White, continued from page 1 Drama Club, something he shares with his wife Barbara, a former teacher and now a historian and author. “Noises Off” is the second play he has directed for TWN and his third play this year. Explaining that he, the cast and vital crew put in an average of four hours a day during rehearsals, he said eventually he would like to pare this part of his life down to a play every two years. As rewarding as it is, whether directing students or stage veterans, the role is exhausting and requires dedicated personal investment. “When I do the Drama Club at the high school, Barbara and I sort of run that together and we do everything: the lighting, the sound, the set design and construction, the posters and the programs,” White said. “I have to say Theatre Workshop 10 years ago was more like that, but now Theatre Workshop is so professional. As director, I’m just one small piece of the machine. Theatre Workshop has come a long way in its ability to put on a professional production.” White moved to the island in 1973 after college. Nantucket represented his first teaching application, his first teaching job interview and his first and only such position. For 31 years, he taught middle and high school English, social studies and drama. He took a sabbatical to earn his master’s

degree in Contemporary Theater Practice and Criticism, and when he returned he started working with the school’s musicals and comedies. “My interest in theater began very slowly,” he said. “I was an English teacher with an English degree. Theater is really hands-on English. I found students like reading plays bet-
ter than a novel and then discussing it. That’s how I came to drama — it’s hands-on English.” White retired from teaching seven years ago. He and Barbara love to travel as often as possible, read and go bird watching. Though he admits that it can be tiring and taxing working on the student plays, he finds it
