PROPERTY NEWS WRITER ve known Catherine Flanagan Stover for almost 20 years and she just never seems to age. Maybe that is because of her wonderful red hair and playful spirit. By the same token, she never seems frazzled by whatever challenges come her way. Perhaps that is because of the jovial family that raised her, or her experiences, both deeply sad and joyful since she married and started her own family, or maybe it is because she has always remained true to herself. Whatever the reasons, she displays an amazing, energized attitude as she enters her most intense work period as Town Clerk with the recent Annual Town Meeting and the local elections that keep her at the polls from about 7 a.m. till past 9 p.m. Without counting state or national elections, Special Town Meetings or Special Town Elections, this year marks Catherine’s 15th ATM and annual island elections. “I’m glad they are trying it,” she said of the town’s experiment with a Saturday Town Meeting. “People have mentioned it for years and many other towns do it in a day. It’s a social thing and it gets the business of the town done, but we have an inordinate amount of zoning articles other towns don’t have, and unless you understand a lot about zoning it seems like it’s always changing, changing, changing.” Catherine was born on Nantucket to Charles and Ruth Ann (Murphy) Flanagan, who were both natives and had three other children besides her. When the kids were growing up their father was co-owner of the Dreamland movie house and the siblings were allowed to see films and get popcorn for free. Well, sort of free. They each had chores sweeping, selling tickets, ushering and cleaning bathrooms. “Of course, all of us worked there from the time we were little,” she recalled. “We all were part of it.” After high school, Catherine studied elementary educa-

Who has been the biggest influence on your life? What lessons did they teach you? My parents have been very influential for me and taught me the basics: be kind, work hard and help others. I am grateful for their guidance and example. Did you enjoy school? What kind of student were you? I was a good student — enjoyed learning and working with my classmates and instructors. What do you do to unwind? Walk on the beach with my dogs, go for a run, yoga/pilates, read, or just enjoy a glass of wine or dinner with friends and family.

How would you spend your ideal day? My favorite way to spend a summer day is sailing with my family, cooking out at the beach, catching a sunset and swinging in the hammock at home. If you could re-live a day of your life again, which would it be and why? Our wedding was a blast. I love getting together with family & friends, and re-living the three-day celebration would be a trip. What was the first house you bought, and why? The first house we bought was in Centerville, on Cape Cod.We spend a lot of time on Cape Cod visiting family and friends, and it’s been really nice having a place off-island, especially when the boats & planes get cancelled. What is your favorite benefit to living year-round on Nantucket? Getting to enjoy the wonderful shops, restaurants and beautiful natural surroundings in the off-season is such a treat. Stover, continued from page 1 tion at Worcester State College. At the age of 18, while at a hockey game between her school and the University of New Haven, she met John Stover who was attending UNH. Not being too savvy about the rules of sports, when a puck came flying over the boards, Catherine gingerly picked it up and threw it back into the rink. Horrified at this breach, Stover immediately chastised Catherine and prevented her from repeating the travesty when another puck landed by her seat. That was the start of their relationship, and in 1971 the couple married. Catherine transferred to Worcester Junior College, then enrolled at Suffolk University to study business. Many people may be unaware of the next step in her life. In 1984, despite being in her 30s and already having six children, she decided to follow a dream and go to mortuary college. One of the only women in her class, she earned her associate’s degree in the Science of Funeral Service from the New England Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences at Kenmore Square and performed services from 1985 to

1992 in Whitman, Mass. “It was what I was always interested in and what I wanted to do,” she explained, joking that once she told someone she went into the career because she looks good in black. “I was always impressed by the Lewis family (who run the Lewis Funeral Parlor on Nantucket). After John and I lost a son and we had such a bad experience with a funeral director offisland I was inspired to go to mortuary school. It was what I wanted to do and I loved it.” In 1992, the Stovers settled on the island. John, an engineer, was traveling much of the time and it seemed like a good idea for Catherine and the children to live where she had family. In those days, she ran the Flanagan’s guest house on Liberty Street in the summers. During the winter, she worked part-time as a hostess, waitress or housekeeper at various restaurants. Catherine was also a member of the Rotary Club and sat at lunch meetings in the company of established locals such as Flint Ranney. When the town clerk announced she was stepping down, Ranney suggest-

After graduating from Bowling Green State University with a degree in Business, Laura made her way to the East Coast. A chance meeting in Boston turned into her first job — mobile marketing for Nantucket Nectars. For about a year, she traveled up and down the East and West Coasts promoting the “Juice Guys”, then landed on Straight Wharf managing the Allserve General Store in 1998.That summer she fell in love with Nantucket, the ocean and a sailor. For five summers, she worked in a “floating office” on the water with Nantucket Moorings and spent winters with Anderson Publishing working on the Nantucket Guide, the Phone Book and Home & Garden Magazine. In 2003, she headed back to Straight Wharf to manage the operations for Hy-Line Cruises. Her favorite activities include exploring the island’s beautiful natural surroundings with our dogs, Hanley and Dash, and spending time on the water with her husband, Vin, and children, Madeline and Gordon. She truly enjoys meeting people and sharing her knowledge of the island in hopes that others can experience what makes Nantucket so special.

my job. Just being part of something that has got so much history and sense of community that Nantucket does — I feel so connected to it. It’s really cool when somebody comes in and they’re trying to find someone they grew up with or they knew long ago. Knowing the names of people by their maiden name and their history, you feel such a connection to the past, present and the future. It’s a gift. Every bit of experience I’ve had in my entire life I’ve used at the town clerk’s office.”
