ART TERMS
by Sara Lee Burd
Going to the galleries offers a range of opportunities to encounter a variety of art. Knowing these terms will help give words to your experience. SITE-SPECIFIC INSTALLATION
An artwork that encompasses a physical space such as a room or gallery for viewers to enter and experience as a complete work of art.
URBAN CONTEMPORARY
NEO SURREALISM
This representational style of art started in the 1970s and 80s as a revival of the Surrealist movement begun in 1920s Paris by artists such as Man Ray and Salvador Dali. Much like their predecessors, contemporary artists working in this mode present absurd juxtapositions and styles that evoke dreamlike, fluid reality.
PERFORMANCE ART
A style of art inspired by urban lifestyle and culture. Many artists draw from graffiti and street art imagery and often present political and social issues. While it is relatively new to the fine art market, it is now highly exhibited and collected. 18
An event or action that is offered to an audience as art usually performed live by an artist. This type of art rejects the idea that art must exist as a physical object and places the significance of art on the concept, execution, and potential outcomes from the experience. The performance may be scripted or free form and can take place in any location.
Nashville Arts Magazine 2016 Gallery Guide
ART TERMS
FIBER ART
VIDEO ART
Usually in the form of sculpture, wall hangings, and installations, this work highlights the artist’s use of materials such as textiles, yarn, felt, and natural and synthetic fibers. The name of this global art form came from curators in Europe after WWII and became a vehicle for discussing larger issues surrounding gender, feminism, and domesticity beginning in the 1960s. Today, the medium is diverse and encompasses a wide range of topics.
A type of art made using digital and analog recordings with or without sound. Artists display video art in a variety of ways including projections, television screens, sculptural installations, etc. The medium incorporates a variety of formats and styles such as highly edited narrative sequences to abstractions that explore the medium’s formal and technological capabilities.
WOODTURNING
MONOTYPE
A technique used in woodworking in which artists move wood along a lathe, a stationary electrical tool, to shape and create designs on ornamental objects and to make sculpture.
A printmaking method in which an artist presses pigment that was applied to a solid material such as wood, glass, or metal onto a piece of paper. The resulting impressions are sometimes reworked after the first press to create variations on a theme or unique works of art.
REPOUSSÉ A metalworking technique that involves hammering or applying other means of force to the back of a sheet of metal to create low relief forms onto the other side. The term comes from the French meaning “pushed up” because the image literally rises from the metal surface. This method dates back thousands of years and remains a sophisticated means of expression by contemporary artists. Nashville Arts Magazine 2016 Gallery Guide
19
ART TERMS SIMULTANEOUS CONTRAST
The perceptual phenomenon that makes complementary colors (such as red/green, yellow/purple, blue/orange) appear brighter when placed side by side. This color theory has been used by artists for centuries but became the subject of art by Modernists such as the Color Field artists of the 1950s. Contemporary artists incorporate these combinations into a number of art forms from performance to portraiture.
ASSEMBLAGE A type of artwork that contains threedimensional objects, images, paints, and resins all combined into a single composition. The significance of these works often depends on considering the relationship of the items included. The medium dates back to the early twentieth century and continues to address issues of poverty, consumerism, and feminism in contemporary culture.
REPRESENTATIONAL ART
FOLK ART Also referred to as outsider/ Southern folk art, it originated in the Southeastern United States. Its relatively recent acceptance by art institutions has brought attention to the variety of artists, styles, and subjects that fall under this overarching term. Described most simply as art made in a primitive manner at times employing non-traditional art materials, these works have been lauded for their authentic artistic expression. Related contemporary movements include Neo-primitivism and Urban Folk art. 20
A style of art that depicts objects and people in a recognizable manner. The term is only used for a work that has reference to an item from the real world and flexibly includes a number of art forms including photography, sculpture, painting, digital art, among others. Easily remembered as the opposite of abstract art.
