NASHVILLE WALLS PROJECT by Éva Boros Photography by Colin M Day Since its initial launch in May 2016, the Nashville Walls Project (NWP) has joined forces with the local business and arts community in transforming the streets of Music City into a gallery of its own. The majority of NWP murals were painted within a two-block radius of Nashville’s 5th Avenue of the Arts. The Cornerstone Building, located on the corner of 6th Avenue and Church Street, showcases murals by Curiot from Mexico, Rone from Australia, and artist duo Herakut from Germany. Shoe from Amsterdam and Above from Germany can be seen on the parking garage adjacent to 5th Avenue, and located inside the lobby of the Kress Building is the 7-ft.-tall King Pigeon painted by Dutch artist Adele Renault. local street artists pays tribute to Gibson Custom Division. Going beyond 5th Avenue, San Francisco artists Mike Shine and Mars-1 painted murals in Germantown and on Music Row. British street artist Louis Masai's mural is in East Nashville. Within the first year, NWP has hosted ten international and six local artists, and the roster is set to grow with the addition of murals this spring.

Co-founder of the Nashville Walls Project Brian Greif said, "We were thrilled with the murals last year. The artists loved Nashville and Nashville seems to love the murals. We have much more planned for 2017." For more information on the Nashville Walls Project, visit www.nashvillewallsproject.com.

PUBLIC ART

Light Meander Drawing inspiration from the city’s relationship to the Cumberland River, Light Meander’s curves flow from the base of the sculpture, similar to the way the river wraps around the heart of downtown and continues through Davidson County. Artists Laura Haddad and Tom Drugan have contributed to Nashville’s public art collection with a sculpture that truly captures the spirit of the city. With color-changing LED strips, a ribbon of textured electric lights shines in the night, even coordinating with holidays throughout the year. Look closely and you can see that the sculpture features reflective metal guitar picks. Light Meander is hard to miss on 1st Avenue between Broadway and the Ascend Amphitheater. Bike Racks Just in time for spring, Metro Arts is thrilled to introduce the completed Phase III of its Bike Racks initiative with four new artist-designed bike racks throughout the community. In 2010, in support of Nashville’s commitment to 20

Witness Walls It’s hard to put a label on Witness Walls artist Walter Hood. Currently serving as Professor of Landscape Architecture & Environmental Planning and Urban Design at UC Berkeley, Hood has shown no limits in his work in art, design, and education. The final design for Witness Walls is the result of extensive research and interaction with veterans of the Nashville Civil Rights movement. Hood utilizes two graphic concrete techniques that encourage viewers to move around the walls and experience the artwork from different vantage points. Abstract-stencil compositions depict actions of the movement—marching, protesting, and walking to school—while the shadow graphic [photo] images portray the emotions and expressions of the movement by focusing on people’s hands and facial expressions.

green and healthy living, Metro Arts installed the first of the bike racks and hasn’t looked back since. Now numbering 21 artworks, the collection has continued to grow and display the designs of local and regional artists. The third phase of Bike Racks includes Zach Duensing’s Shelves at the Looby Library, Randy Purcell’s Bee Cycle at Hadley Park, Robert Hendrick’s Intersection Rails at the North Branch Library, and Kristina Colucci’s Groundball at First Tennessee Park.
