Familiar names on the Songwriter of the Year announcements from ASCAP, BMI and SESAC, the main Performing Rights Organizations in the USA, with all three PROs awarding their top spot to previous winners. Ashley Gorley should be shopping for a new display cabinet as he won ASCAP’s Songwriter of the Year Award for the 8th time (including 7 in a row). Ross Copperman was named BMI’s Songwriter of the Year – his fourth win – while SESAC announced Matt McGinn as their Songwriter of the Year for the third time. Song of the Year Awards were also announced. The BMI Song of the Year Award was presented to Ben Burgess for “Whiskey Glasses” (co-written with Kevin Kadish), recorded by Morgan Wallen. The song was certified 3x Platinum, topping both the Billboard Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay charts. ASCAP’s Song of the Year is Old Dominion’s “One Man Band”, written by group members Matt Ramsey, Trevor Rosen, and Brad Tursi with Josh Osborne. The Luke Combs hit “Even Though I’m Leavin’” won the SESAC Song of the Year for Wyatt Durette who co-wrote the song with Combs and Ray Fulcher.
Legacy Recordings has released the first-ever official music video for Elvis Presley’s “(You’re The) Devil in Disguise” and it is animated! TEEN MUSIC NEWS: After releasing her last sassy doo wop single, “Mama Says”, soulful teen sensation Bailey James switches the mood to a heavier topic with her new mature and relevant song, “World You’re Livin’ In”. This contemporary blues single portrays what’s going on in the world and what is going through Bailey’s mind in 2020. “World You’re Livin’ In” is available at digital retailers now. The song was inspired by Bailey’s perception on the current state of the world and the additional fuel for those battling mental health issues. “I wrote the song in like 20 minutes,” Bailey said in sharing her writing process. “As a teenager, I had a lot of emotions while going through everything that has happened thus far in 2020 and observing and feeling a certain way about everything. “(You’re The) Devil in Disguise” was written by Bill Giant, Bernie Baum and Florence Kaye. Grady Martin, Scotty Moore and Harold Bradley all played guitar on this session. Other musicians on the song include DJ Fontana and Buddy Harman on drums, Bob Moore on bass, Floyd Cramer on piano and Boots Randolph on sax and shakers. The background vocalists are The Jordanaires and Millie Kirkham. “(You’re The) Devil in Disguise” hit #1 on The Official U.K. Singles Chart and spent 11 weeks on the Billboard’s Hot 100 chart where it peaked at #3.
VINYL NEWS: John Prine’s last recorded song, “I Remember Everything,” will be available on limited-edition, 7-inch blue vinyl pressed by Third Man Records early next year. The release includes two versions of the song—the original recording and a new exclusive rendition featuring a special strings arrangement. Proceeds from the 7-inch will benefit The Recording Academy’s MusiCares COVID-19 Relief Fund. “I Remember Everything” debuted earlier this year at #1 on Billboard’s Rock Digital Song Sales chart making it the highestcharting single of Prine’s career as a performer. Written by Prine and his longtime collaborator Pat McLaughlin, the song was recorded last year in Prine’s living room with Grammy Awardwinning producer Dave Cobb and engineer Gena Johnson.
