he past few years have seen their share of challenges — first, the economic downturn in 2008, followed by the flood less than two years later — but through it all the Nashville Symphony has continued to make great music, thanks to the generous and enthusiastic support of our community, the committed leadership of our Board of Directors and the determination of our musicians and staff. In the face of every challenge, we have responded by remaining focused on our mission while making sure that we are responsible stewards of the public’s support. Under the leadership of our phenomenal Music Director Giancarlo Guerrero, our orchestra continues to build on its already strong reputation for passionate musicianship and distinctive programming. Over the past several years, our recordings have earned a total of seven GRAMMY® Awards, and our orchestra has been heard on the national airwaves numerous times on American Public Media’s Performance Today. Much of this attention is the result of our commitment to expanding the American repertoire with a growing list of commissions, world premieres and recordings. Our recording of Pulitzer Prize winner Joseph Schwantner’s Chasing Light… is the latest piece in the Ford Made in America commissioning program, which is dedicated to bringing music by living composers to audiences nationwide. But the Nashville Symphony’s music is reaching even farther than that: Our premiere of Béla Fleck’s Concerto for Banjo in September 2011 circled all the way around the world, thanks to a webcast that reached thousands of listeners in 49 different countries. This past year, we had yet another opportunity to showcase our innovative spirit in a big way at Carnegie Hall’s Spring For Music Festival. The concert, which was broadcast live on New York City’s WQXR-FM and locally on Classical 91One,

featured a new work by legendary composer Terry Riley written especially for Nashvillebased electric violinist Tracy Silverman. Our orchestra opened the evening with Charles Ives’ Universe Symphony, a work so ambitious that it has rarely been performed since its conception a century ago. These bold programming choices earned our orchestra favorable coverage in The New York Times and The New Yorker, among other publications. All of these high-profile projects wouldn’t mean a thing, however, if we didn’t share a deep and abiding connection with our community. Our music education and community engagement programs, which reached more than 250,000 people over the past year, have been tailored to meet the needs of students, teachers and members of the Middle Tennessee community. Our musicians devoted a cumulative total of more than 9,000 hours to performing and teaching across the entire region, and we welcomed thousands of schoolchildren to the Schermerhorn to experience and learn about music through our Young People’s Concerts. We reached an even greater number of people of all ages and backgrounds through free programs such as our Community Concerts in local parks. At the Nashville Symphony, we believe that music has the power to change people’s lives for the better. So when we foster innovation and creativity within our own institution, we’re driven by the conviction that we can spread that adventurous, forward-thinking spirit into homes and classrooms across the region, creating a stronger, more dynamic community in the process.

— Alan D. Valentine, President & CEO

he Nashville Symphony’s Board of Directors is dedicated to ensuring the long-term sustainability of Tennessee’s largest performing arts organization. Our orchestra has been enriching, educating and entertaining our community for more than 65 years, and even in the midst of uncertain times we look optimistically to the future, knowing that prudent management and an unwavering focus on our mission will lay the foundation for the Nashville Symphony’s continued success in decades to come. Already, the Symphony’s musicians, staff and management have shown just how nimble they are in the face of formidable challenges. Following the May 2010 flood, which forced Schermerhorn Symphony Center to close for seven months, the organization never once slowed down, continuing to present its concerts and educational programs at alternate locations throughout the entire rebuilding process. Since the orchestra’s return to the Schermerhorn in 2011, management has been developing and fine-tuning a long-term strategic plan to ensure that the Symphony is able to grow and maintain its dual mission of artistic excellence and community service. An essential part of this strategy includes ensuring that the Schermerhorn remains busy every day of the year, whether through renting the building for events such as weddings and corporate meetings, or through expanding its concert presentations. As a result, management added more than two dozen concerts to the Schermerhorn’s calendar this season, and it continues to find more ways of maximizing ticket revenue while providing the people of Middle Tennessee with quality arts programming. This increased revenue will allow the Symphony to continue its ambitious commissioning and recording projects while also making sure that even more people in our community have access to great music and lifechanging music education programs.

The strategic planning process has also provided a valuable opportunity to assess the Symphony’s goals and dreams for the future. That means making sure that our artistic ambitions not only help the orchestra become an even more accomplished ensemble, but also excite ticket buyers and donors. Equally important, we must remain adaptable and responsive to the needs of our community, to ensure that we continue to provide our fellow citizens with services that have genuine value and meaning to them. Finally, as we observe the tremendous changes taking place within our industry, we must ensure that we are able to stay ahead of these changes by retaining committed staff, keeping pace with trends in technology and fostering innovation. As we look ahead with determination, we remember that we have much to celebrate today: our beautiful concert hall, our visionary Music Director, a growing list of GRAMMY® Awards and nominations, and our recent, high-profile appearance at Carnegie Hall. The Board of Directors is proud of our musicians and administrative staff who have responded thoughtfully and proactively to each of the challenges they have faced thus far. We have great confidence that, working together, we can keep the Nashville Symphony thriving.

ith a growing list of critically acclaimed recordings and GRAMMY® Awards, the Nashville Symphony’s profile has risen considerably over the past decade. This year, Music

inspired, in part, by Nashville’s own Schermerhorn Symphony Center. The final stop on the tour was Carnegie Hall, where the Nashville Symphony performed on the closing night of the Spring For Music Festival. Now in its second year, this national festival showcases orchestras with adventurous, innovative programming, and the Nashville Symphony’s performance was risk-taking indeed: The concert opened with Charles Ives’ rarely heard Universe Symphony, a piece so monumental that it requires an expanded orchestra broken up into five different ensembles, each led by a different conductor. The Carnegie Hall performance was enthusiastically received, with a thunderous standing ovation and The New York Times’ James Oestreich noting the orchestra’s “fine skill and artistry.” Also on the program was The Palmian Chord Ryddle, a brand-new work by pioneering composer Terry Riley, featuring Nashville-based electric violinist Tracy Silverman. Ives and Riley are both maverick American composers, and they fit right in with the Nashville Symphony’s focus on the music of this country’s greatest and most inventive

composers. In keeping with that focus, the orchestra kicked off its SunTrust Classical Series this season with the world premiere of Béla Fleck’s Concerto for Banjo. It’s hard to think of a better match-up of orchestra and composer: Fleck is one of the Nashville community’s best-known musicians, and he’s earned a worldwide reputation for taking the banjo in fresh new directions. He dedicated his concerto — which featured the composer as soloist — to banjo master Earl Scruggs, who was in the audience for the premiere. Other American music highlights this season included Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring; the world premiere of Richard Danielpour’s Darkness in the Ancient Valley; and the Nashville premiere of Dancers, Dreamers and Presidents, by Vanderbilt graduate Daniel Ber-

nard Roumain, who’s making a name for himself by incorporating influences from hip-hop and popular culture into classical music. (For a complete list of premieres and commissions, see facing page.) Guerrero and the orchestra made plenty of room for the great orchestral repertoire as well, with performances of landmark works by Beethoven, Brahms, Mahler, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff, Shostakovich and many others. Guest performers this season included the return of favorites Emanuel Ax, Tianwa Yang and Garrick Ohlsson, along with stunning newcomers Natasha Paremski and Augustin Hadelich. The Nashville Symphony Chorus made several notable appearances, performing Boro-

din’s Polovtsian Dances, Ravel’s Daphis et Chloé, Handel’s Messiah and Orff ’s Carmina Burana, which closed the Classical Series on a note of high excitement. This season also marked the retirement of longtime Chorus Director George Mabry, who played a key role in the growth and development of the Chorus over the past 14 years. Wynonna, Christopher Cross and Chris Botti all made appearances in the Bank of America Pops Series, while the Nashville Symphony’s Jazz Series spotlighted guitarist Larry Carlton (another Nashville resident), Branford Marsalis and vocalist Cassandra Wilson. which are attended by thousands of schoolchildren each year. To ensure that all students have the opportunity to experience the Nashville Symphony, we subsidize transportation to these free concerts at the Schermerhorn, and we provide in-class lesson plans that allow teachers to integrate the concert-going experience into classroom curriculum. Materials are designed to meet grade-specific standards established by the state of Tennessee for both music and core subjects such as math and literacy. For schools that may not be able to schedule visits to the Schermerhorn, AT&T Ensembles in the Schools sends groups of Nashville Symphony musicians to area classrooms, where they present a fun and educational presentation tailored to students’ grade level. Volunteers

Nashville Symphony Orchestra League

The Nashville Symphony couldn’t serve the community at the level we do without the involvement of our dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers, who assist the organization every day by taking on a number of responsibilities, including: • Providing volunteer support for Education & Community Engagement programs • Providing office support for administrative staff • Leading public tours of Schermerhorn Symphony Center • Greeting and assisting patrons at concerts. This year, 203 active volunteers donated more than 8,000 service hours to the Nashville Symphony, providing a virtual savings of more than $136,000 to the organization. Special recognition goes to our Volunteer of the Year, Mike Benson, who has donated more than 500 hours of his time to the Nashville Symphony this season. For more information about volunteering for the Nashville Symphony, visit NashvilleSymphony.org/volunteer.

In addition to the invaluable work of our volunteers, the Nashville Symphony is also supported by the Nashville Symphony Orchestra League (NSOL), a membership-driven organization responsible for several key events and programs. These include: • The Thor Johnson Scholarship Fund, which annually awards a total of $7,500 in scholarships to local students in grades 5-12. • Classical Conversations, pre-concert lectures hosted by Music Director Giancarlo Guerrero and special guests prior to each SunTrust Classical Series concert. • Providing administrative support for the Nordstrom Symphony Fashion Show. • Providing volunteer support for Education & Community Engagement programs. For more information about the Nashville Symphony Orchestra League, visit NashvilleSymphony.org/NSOL.

LEGACY SOCIETY LEAVING A LEGACY, BUILDING A FUTURE When Schermerhorn Symphony Center opened to the public in 2006, we envisioned our concert hall serving many generations for decades to come. If you have that same vision for the Nashville Symphony, then a planned gift can become your ultimate demonstration of commitment and support. You can help us plan for our future — and your own — through this creative approach to philanthropy and estate planning, which allows you to make a significant contribution to the Nashville Symphony while also enjoying income and tax benefits for you and your family. Great orchestras, like all great cultural institutions throughout history, are gifts to posterity; they are built and bestowed to succeeding generations by visionary philanthropists. To find out more about planned giving opportunities, please visit NashvilleSymphony.org/plannedgiving, or contact Hayden Pruett, Major Gifts Officer, at 615.687.6615
