Welcome Come our

201 1/12 Season

2 0 1 1/12 S ea so n Nashville Symphony 1

I am so pleased to welcome you back

to Schermerhorn Symphony Center! I think of every concert season as a collection of stories, and that story begins with you. Your presence in the concert hall brings our orchestra to life, and your support makes our dreams possible. Our next season promises to be one incredible journey, and I invite you to join us. We’ll explore the simple joys of Copland’s Appalachian Spring, the valiant struggle of Shostakovich’s Leningrad Symphony and the soulful lyricism of Mahler’s Fourth Symphony. New American music is a big part of our story as well. Next season we’ll continue to give a voice to visionary American composers such as Béla Fleck, Terry Riley and Richard Daniel pour, each of whom will debut ambitious new works with our orchestra. As always, we will be joined by world-renowned guest artists, including Yo-Yo Ma, Emanuel Ax, Chris Botti, Marvin Hamlisch and Nashville’s own Tracy Silverman and Larry Carlton. And of course, there’s the story of our return to Schermerhorn Symphony Center after the historic flood of 2010. Although we greatly missed the acoustic excellence and intimacy of our beautiful hall last season, our symphony continued to play at a worldclass level regardless of where they were performing. That’s a testament to the virtuosity of our orchestra, who have earned an invitation to play at Carnegie Hall in May 2012. I know that you’re just as excited to be back at the Schermerhorn as we are. There’s no better place to experience wonderful stories told through great music, and I look forward to seeing you here.

Giancarlo Guerrero, Music Director

BRAHMS’S FIRST

December 1, 2 & 3, 2011 JOHN ESTACIO - Frenergy v DVORÁK - Concerto for Piano in G minor, Op. 33 BRAHMS - Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68 Peter Oundjian, conductor Natasha Paremski, piano There’ll be a blaze of sparks when the evening opens with Canadian composer John Estacio’s Frenergy, which combines the words “frenetic” and “energy.” Guest pianist Natasha Paremski possesses an artistic maturity well beyond her v years, which she’ll apply to Dvorák’s colorful, melodic Piano Concerto.

OHLSSON PLAYS CHOPIN

Guest pianist Garrick Ohlsson will showcase his own specialty: the work of Frédéric Chopin.

RUSSIAN MASTERS

March 8, 9 & 10, 2012 MUSSORGSKY - Introduction to “Khovantchina” (Dawn on the Moscow River) PROKOFIEV - Concerto for Violin No. 2 in G minor, Op. 63 SHOSTAKOVICH - Symphony No. 7 in C major, Op. 60 “Leningrad” Giancarlo Guerrero, conductor Cho-Liang Lin, violin Shostakovich’s powerful Seventh Symphony was written as a response to the Nazi siege of Leningrad. The perfect piano concerto — that’s how soloist Jon Kimura Parker describes Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. It’s also the perfect vehicle for this charismatic pianist. Franck’s D minor Symphony is possibly the greatest symphonic work by a French composer, with a rich sonority that evokes the sound of an organ.

Classical

Genius! World-class pianist Emanuel Ax’s brilliance will bring out all of the bold invention at the heart of Beethoven’s Second Concerto. It will be a stunning lead-in to Elgar’s lively In the South, which was influenced by the British composer’s time on the Italian Riviera and by the music of Richard Strauss.

Igor Stravinsky originally composed Petrushka as the score for a ballet about a puppet who comes magically to life.

DR. ATOMIC & MR. HAYDN

BRAHMS & SIERRA’S SINFONÍA

Haydn’s 100th Symphony earned its nickname thanks to the martial beat created by the combination of bass drum, triangle and cymbals. Written more than two centuries later, Doctor Atomic Symphony offers a different take on military might: Adapted from John Adams’s opera of the same name, this powerful piece tells the story of Dr. Robert Oppenheimer and the dawning of the nuclear era. Pianist Jonathan Biss will join the orchestra for Brahms’s First Piano Concerto, an expansive work rich with lovely details.

Roberto Sierra’s Sinfonía No. 4 caused such a sensation when it was performed here two years ago that we’re bringing it back — and this time we’re recording it! The composer has created a vibrant signature style by infusing classical music with Latin American sounds, and Chabrier’s Habanera will add an extra dash of Spanish flair. Augustin Hadelich is a phenomenal violinist, completely up to the incredible technical demands of Brahms’s Violin Concerto.

February 9, 10 & 11, 2012 HAYDN - Symphony No. 100 in G major, “Military” JOHN ADAMS - Doctor Atomic Symphony BRAHMS - Concerto for Piano No. 1 in D minor, Op. 15 Giancarlo Guerrero, conductor Jonathan Biss, piano
