MARKUS SEER Born and raised in Munich, and currently there. Loving the city, but is always driven to nature, the mountains and the woods. For him analogue photography has something magical. Like vinyl or old cassette tapes. Liking texture and grain more than sharpness and perfection. If you would ask him for the best way to take a great photo he would simply say‌ watch and wait.

The perfect way to end the week is by grabbing some friends for a small adventure. Our girls went for their own little camping trip for ACUTE's fall issue. They picked the right spot near the sea, built a tent and had fun on the beach.

SMOOTH BUSINESS Morphing from an idea into a internet famous company, meet Frank. A group of entrepreneurs from Melbourne have turned Frank - their coffee scrub - into a skincare sensation through out the aesthetic world of beauty products. We chatted with Bree, one of Frank’s cofounders and got down and dirty.

63

We’re all about embracing and loving your skin. It’s as simple as that.

64

So Bree, lets start off with what was the initial step that got you scrub left over coffee on your skin? Frank’s story (quite aptly) begins at a café in Melbourne; my partner Steve’s café. Two ladies came in and asked for the old coffee grinds. They told Steve that it’s a great treatment for cellulite and stretch marks. We did some research and it turns out the ladies were right but you must use fresh coffee. Old used coffee has had the caffeine extracted and is therefore no longer effective. I tried it and yes I felt ridiculous but my skin instantly felt incredibly smooth. Research and product development followed, so did the brand and communications strategy. In your opinion does Frank and coffee specifically rejuvenate the skin better than other products? I can’t speak for other products but I personally love the way frank makes my skin feel. He’s definitely a unique product. We put a lot of thought into the ingredients we use and the texture of the scrubs. Many a night was and is spent product testing to make sure every product does exactly what it should. He’s a coarser scrub than most on the market and as such is great for rejuvenation. You currently offer around three products. One of them has been more successful and what do you think the reason for that is? The original scrub is our hero scrub. It’s the first product we released and as such people will naturally remain loyal to it. I personally prefer coconut, but that’s just me. We’re about to diversify our product range and I’m excited to see how people respond to the new products. Your initial marketing campaign went viral with naked customer advertising Frank. What about nudity speaks to the Frank brand? I think people get very fixated on nudity as a sexual thing when it’s really not. Our product is a body scrub that’s best used in the shower. As such people are generally naked when they use it. We’re all about embracing and loving your skin. It’s as simple as that. Feminists online have claimed Frank as a brand that brings down the female image due to the blunt advertising methods you use. What’s your opinion on the matter? As one of the three female directors that control all frank’s marketing I would have to disagree. We celebrate women for their brains, their banter and their beauty but we never objectify or bring down the female image. Our aim is to empower women to love their body and their skin but never to be defined by it.

67

from most opinion leaders. But we do always encourage honesty and to be frank our product does make a mess of the shower. We like that bloggers are upfront about the pros and cons. We always listen to feedback and respond accordingly where we can.

You manage your brand as if Frank is a human (i’m assuming a man). Why the name Frank? Why brand your product as an entity? We wanted a name that would be memorable and stand out. A simple name to counter balance all the feminine, soft words that are so commonly associated with women’s skin care. We came up with Frank. Which we liked because it also means honesty. And lets be frank being honest and upfront is exactly what we are about. From here our loveable dirty character was born. We decided to personify the brand as another point of difference. It also allows us to have a lot of fun with the brand and connect with our customers on a more personal level.

What is next for the Frank brand? We have big plans. The first year of business was quite hectic for us. We had to spend most of our time just trying to keep up with the ever-growing demand and the pressures of rapid expansion. Now we’re finally in a position to take a step back and focus on planning and expanding the brand. We’re starting with two new products that are set to be released in the next month. From here we’re looking to increase our reach in the international markets and continue to create more products: always affordable, caffeinated and for the body.

Prominent fashion bloggers have embraced Frank and responded with a so-so reaction to your product. What do you take from these opinion leaders? We’ve actually had an overwhelmingly positive reaction

MUN There's nothing like the state of travelling. This trip has been a long overdue. Munich is a great mix of charming places and laid-back atmosphere. Rent a bike. It's a really pleasant way of sightseeing.

100

NICH 101

THE MUNICH STADTMUSEUM is one of Munich's cultural center pieces. The museum features art and instruments from all over the globe and also German specific pieces.

102

MARIENPLATZ is one of the most unique aspects of Munich's culture. Churches have semi-gothic architecture and billboards are nowhere to be found. We travelled its space on a gloomy day and watched the ornaments being hung.

103

SODA is a stunning store with a huge variety of magazines and books. It's a friendly space with independent erotic publications, travel almanacs, graphic design issues and even culinary art. As a visitor be prepared to flip through all the issues on the shelves found in the store. Not purchasing something inside of SODA is highly difficult.

105

HAY STORE German culture has always had a sharp eye for design and usability. Hay is furniture store that combines these two essential concepts. Their store features uniquely designed products that enable well-living in your own home.

106

107

OLYMPIAPARK is one of Munich’s finest architectural landmarks. It served as a sports ground for the Olympic games in 1972 and currently many cultural events are held there. Our very own editor Nastya took a tour of its grounds on a grey -yet typical- day in Munich. 110

It’s precise architecture is a common element in the German culture and also appealing to the spectator. One could equate the stadium itself to a circus with the replicated steel huts that hover over the attendees. Documenting the day on film Nastya Gerak wields her 35mm film camera and captured the stark visuals a vacant stadium radiates. The surroundings and architecture resemble a very Richard Serra like way of combining art and landscapes. 114
