landscape design_open urban spaces

This project concerns a site at the upper edge of Thessaloniki center that exists as a crack in the urban tissue and indicates the degraded and unplanned character of the area. The site is a gulch with steep banks, standing as a border of the forest, the neighborhood and the city center. Our main goal was to transform this abandoned, isolated site to a vital system that would play a defining and unifying role to the city, preserving the characteristics of the topography. The proposal was a mild character intervention using soft surface materials, that would serve as a park for the locals and a way to access the forest and the open theatre just above. The design consisted of a route, a “ribbonâ€?, that was also a retaining wall for the ground. At the center of the site where the urban surroundings are at the same level, the ribbon becomes a local square with an underground cafĂŠ.

xyz.groningen proposal faces with the thorniness of suburbia and expansion of cities.the analysis focuses on the utility of networks and local i d e n t i t i e s . //:city vs suburb//: centrality vs decentralization//: typology vs anarchy //: accesibility is the key factor for a sustainable versatile net-working society. city center is revived with the surge coming from the suburbs. suburbs multiply when cities are overspaced and close enough. networks can trim or extend distanse. networks breed settlements.

//:connection//:city and satellite city//:junction//:bridge//:transitional place//:road with allure//: healthy working networks concentrate services, trade and establishments that should be in the skirts of the city. //:car trade is a pole of attraction//:facilities and services shape the physiognomy of this junction//: local identities form the anarchy of cities. a wide range of colors is revealed and should be inhanced in every aspect. the site of Groningen is marked with the identity of seven piers with boat-houses attached to them. this form of undesigned architecture, local and nomadic gives a different value, a color, that makes the site attractive and diversive. the boat houses are the landmark of this site.

//:pier:: a pier is a raised walkway over water, supported by widely spread piles or pillars. //: in architecture a pier is an upright support for a superstructure, such as an arch or a bridge.in buildings that are designed as a sequence of bays, each window or door opening between piers is concidered a single bay

textile structures_ form finding workshop

Inspired by fashion design, clothes and their fabrication techniques the workshop was about adopting a transformable second skin. Individual form defining design strategies were developed in order to generate spatial concepts with the parallel search of materials and geometry development. The generator idea was the “seam of a cloth and its different types. Its magnification to three dimensions produced gaps and fills that were appropriate for the exploration of a transformable skin and the interactive space between it and the body.

diploma project_reburial:on ruins

Situated in the city centre of Thessaloniki, the public square in front of the former Ministry of Macedonia and Thrace, remains until today an unexploited site of archaeological findings. During 1993 this square was planned to become an underground parking facility and since then, the ruins of earlier times have been exposing the inhibition of the Greek government to plan urban spaces and to deal with its own past. The first approach was to visit the archaeologist who was in charge of the excavation and conduct thorough architectural measure drawings in an attempt to comprehend the ruins. After research it was decided that the reburial of the ruins was the most appropriate treatment to combine preservation, site exploitation and planning innovation. Taking geomorphology as a vocabulary for the intervention several experiments were conducted on the volume that was to be added above the ruins. Primal forms that served as discoveries themselves were added and correlated with the urban fabric. This way there was a direct conversation between the ruins and the volume added above them, introducing the elements of the site in a new form. The idea of a hill was developed, rising as a power lift from beneath, standing in front of the Ministry, making the public surface twice as much, open from every side.

dissertation_maps and mapping in contemporary art This research project is a collection of a range of artists whose work relates to maps and mapping. Since the beginning of the 21st century, there are many examples and thematic exhibitions concerning the map, cartography, new geographical information technologies, mapping and views on the perception of space. With the research starting from the surrealists, and moving on to situationism, pop art, conceptual art and land art, there was an attempt to trace this movement. The map is a symbol, a language, a code, a recipe. Artists are using maps to adopt power, to create new worlds, to situate themselves in reality. Through maps, art can introduce difference, multiplicity and chaos as an entity, and simultaneously art can be an entity. According to Deleuze the map is an abstract machine, blind and silent that induces sight and speech. Louisa Bufardeci is using map symbols to present world according to statistic surveys of the CIA. In a way she is imitating a scientist trying to alter common perspective and establish new views. In the same way Simon Patterson takes the London Underground map and transforms it to his private story by changing the names of the stations to historical, famous people that occasionally connect to each other. The map as a code can unfold someone’s personal world in an understandable and universal way. This project was partly inspired by this realization and more specifically by Mona Hatoum, who in “Hot Spot” turned the world in a political message about global warming, and her work also gave rise to other interpretations. Maya Lin in “Above and below” constructs wire forms inspired by the topography of the underground river system under the state of Indiana, mapping the unseen but existing sources of life that stir the aesthetics. In Hugh Davies’ “Analogue Art Map” there is a communal way of mapping inherently digital things such as social networking, city spots and other relations and on the other side Laura Kurgan in association with Diller Scofidio+ Renfro and Mark Hansen utilize geographical information technologies, statistics and database information to compose “Exit” for Native Land exhibition, focusing upon subjects such as Rising Seas, Population Shifts and statistics on the <disappearance of geographic space>. This dissertation activated a search on the aesthetics of form, landscape and representation methods that are a prime element in architectural design.
