Ilioupoli is situated 6 km southeast of Athens city centre. It lies at the western foot of the forested Hymettus mountain, which covers the eastern half of the municipality. The main avenue is Vouliagmenis Avenue which connects Ilioupoli with central Athens. Ilioupoli is subdivided into 11 quarters/neighborhoods. Its name is the modern form of the ancient name of Heliopolis in Egypt. It means City of the Sun. Ilioupoli has the same uncommon street plan as Helioupolis in Egypt. Ilioupoli is the seat of the clubs Charavgiakos, club founded in 1949 and Ilioupoli F.C., club founded in 1953.
