Brief: The brief was set by YCN and BEAR and was to create a suitable cereal back that would be both educational and engaging for their target audience. The design must feature some reference to letters and the main topic must directly link somehow as this is the basis of their cereal. The final solution also had to make the box collectable in some way without including the over seen toy inside. The company also suggested that the idea had to be part of a set or could work alongside others but enough to keep a child amused at the breakfast table for a week.

Research: Based on our concept of looking at native countries of bears this was the basis of our initial research. We began by collecting relevant information about the native cultures including China, Arctic, Australia and America. This would form the basis of our facts and educational part of the idea but also as visual reference for the illustrations and colour choices. Our approach was to use illustrations and images to represent the facts as this would be more engaging for the age range of the audience so we individually looked at styles which inspired us. Fortunately our influences are very similar so this made it easier to choose a suitable approach in the development stages. During the process we had to keep coming back and doing more research to generate suitable content that was needed in certain areas. We also had to go back and look at suitable examples of how our individuals designs could be combined. Something which I found worked well from previous Dr ME brief was the use of a patchwork so this is approach we developed after some further researching. We found that this visual was stimulating as lots of detail could be added easily which was fitting to the brief needs.

Concept & ideas: Our concept was to use the cereal packet as a way of children to discover native habitats of bears with the help of letters. Our idea was based around tear, reveal and share in which children could tear and reveal facts which could be kept, collected and shared among each other as a point of discussion at the breakfast table. Children could also tear and craft each letter related to the country explored from the inside of the packet but still allowing the cereal to be held as a practical solution for parents and storing. Initial discussions took the form of multiple web diagrams so that we could iron out what was needed for each category. This then developed into individual initial sketches before bringing our elements together digitally. As our styles and way of thinking is so similar this worked out well but how to display this with the layout and sizes given was something which we struggled with and eventually managed after much deliberation and development.

Production: My contribution to production was initial sketches and layouts which were developed alongside Steph’s illustrations and colour choices. Another element which we thought would be good to include would be a way in which the audience could craft something from the box as the collectable piece as this is both popular and engaging with this audience age range. Our idea was to include a way in which the audience could craft the letter related to the culture of that specific box from a net which would displayed on the inside of the packet. This would then allow the illustrations and facts to be kept in a physical form that would directly link to the idea of letters in the cereal. This would be a good collectable piece as children would want to collect a full alphabet or enough to spell their own name, making it personal. It was my task to create a suitable net that would work appropriately.
