Dialogue (live)

Brief: This was a brief set by two fellow students and it was a simple brief to create an A3 black & white artwork of something which we felt depicted the meaning or word dialogue somehow. The artwork had to be suitable to screen print with another submission. It was then to be shown within a exhibition in Leeds. The brief was open to interpretation by the individual and was to be a short day brief.

Research: Research mainly focussed on the definition and meaning of dialogue as a basis of the direction which I took with visuals. Main visual inspiration looked at existing screen print visuals but also visual ways in which people create and use dialogue, such as the news, emails, photos, postcards etc.

Concept & ideas: Concept one (left) To display the quote ‘Every headline sparks conversation’ The visuals for this concept would be created from various newspaper letters to make up the quote as this is directly linked to the meaning of what is being said. It is a general quote that could be understood by a large audience and could work with any image which it could be collaborated with. After producing this visual I feel like it has a visual representation of a stereotypical ransom note. Because of this I decided not to go with this concept and moved onto another idea which I also started with. Concept two (right) To display the quote ‘Un-captured dialogue within every memory’ This visual uses an old photographed imagery that provokes the idea of memory in a visual form. The quote is added in a simple font so that it could still be easily read when collaborated with another design. Hopefully this idea would spark conversation about past happy times and be more personal to the individual especially when produces as a collaborative screen print. The photo choice was thought about carefully so that it would provoke the right sort of dialogue- one which is positive and happy but also of nostalgia. The final image is halftoned in black and white to work with the brief requirements. I hoped that this would be produced as a postcard as this would suit the visual message of it being a photograph and cause a similar dialogue as actual postcards do.
