Brief: This was a self initiated brief which was formed after working on my self promotion and branding. The brief was to create a full typeface based from the two initial letterforms created from my self brand logo using only the semi circle and triangle shapes from the other letters. This was then to be presented in a type specimen booklet.

Research: Research was easy to gather as I had already looked at some of these examples on PPP as part of my self branding but I also took inspiration from some random pieces which I had stored over the summer months from various blogs. As this was a self initiated project and closely linked to my branding I felt that it should reflect some of my personal design interests within its concept and production. So again during this research I looked at print finishes, binding and use of colour to add interest and details to illustrate the letters further on the page.

Concept & ideas: The concept for the typeface developed from my self branding logo which I had already created in which I formed the initials of my names with the use of two simple shapes and some rearrangements of this. I felt that I could easily develop this into a full typeface and would become a good piece to show of skills and interest but with some purpose behind it for my portfolio. Main concept for this was focussed around a suitable name for it. I eventually settled with ‘Edge’ as this was used to refer to the edges created with the use of geometric shapes and vector images but also to suggest cutting-edge and modern as geometric forms have been on trend this year. Something which I picked up and personally like after scanning my random inspirational images gathered over summer.

Production: Production focussed on the formation of the letters to create the whole alphabet using only the shapes suggested. This was difficult with some letters because of the proportions of the shapes so some legibility is lost but still is readable. Because of this though the typeface would be display type only and to be used at larger point sizes to improve legibility/readability. I created a block and outline version which would then be displayed within the type specimen booklet. This was easy to produce as I did similar print techniques and foil finishes as notepads which I completed just before this and also binding techniques looked at in the Coeliac typeface specimen. Throughout the production of this brief I began to realise that my design interests are within typography, print and hand craft.
