Brief: This was a self initiated brief which was to produce branding for a new restaurant based in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. For this you will be asked to produce all materials that will be needed for the running of the restaurant including a suitable name. As the restaurant will serve only Yorkshire cultural dishes and food sourced from the county this needs to be ideally visually represented in your design throughout.

Research: I have looked at various visuals of the Yorkshire dales and from this looked at possible colour schemes to be used, taking the green hills and contrasting tones from them. Other research took the form of existing restaurant branding and design. Looking at the type of related products the brand was applied to and how they used colours and strong use of type to do so. Based around the concept of dialogue I have done research into Yorkshire dialect to find out what exactly are the cultural dishes of the county but also to find a suitable brand name and image to portray across the products.

Concept & ideas: The concept for the brand name is based around Yorkshire dialect and the famous Yorkshireman’s motto which features a line related to food. ‘Eyt all, sup all, pay nowt’ This was perfect as a brand name it allowed the second word to be change to relate to the product which it applied to but still keep the dialect within each saying. One main feature of Yorkshire beside the landscape is its dialect so it made sense to incorporate this somehow. Something which the audience could relate to but also that would engage with tourist finding it quirky like the place itself. Also followed the same layout system throughout as this would add continuity to the visuals. The visual of the map was also included to use as an alternative image of the county but also give a direct link to the restaurants location.

Production: As this was a brief focussing on Yorkshire dialect my approach to visuals was to use a strong application of type throughout. I have used a serif font to suggest the feeling of heritage of the county but have change the ‘y’ from my original base font because it did not visually work with the cut at the baseline. Had no real purpose and at varying scales lost some of the legibility. A range of font weights have also been used to distinguish between the importance of information and to segregate those words which would change throughout application. Colour scheme is a direct reference to those associated with the dales and the hills.
