80s Channel

Brief: The brief was to propose and design a channel concept that would show only those programs from the 80s. The channel needed to bring 80s shows into the 21st century TV perspective.

Research: This stage of the design looked at digital platforms that are existing within the 21st century as part of channel application. This online presence of the channel is something which I want to focus on as it is something different to tackle within my practice. I found that most used dark colours with good navigational systems to easily direct the audience to where they need to go, allowing them to spend more time focussing on the shows.A strong brand visual is also present among every page. Other research included looking at visuals and shows from the 80s. I wanted to immerse myself fully in the decade to understand it more and what the audience would use to recognise the decade now. I found this was mostly through iconic images from the shows, colours and use of script fonts.

Concept & ideas: The main concept of the logo is to refer to the past but also the decade. I found a great way to do this is to include the rewind icon which works with the idea of returning to past but also 1980s technology used alongside the TV.

Production: This focussed on the brand visual as I realised its importance within the range after researching existing platforms. The rewind icon has been added into the brand name as a replacement to the a’s. This adds a suitable visual which can then be used within the icon visual format suitable for on screen and within the smaller screen sizes and app. I also looked at a variety of different colour schemes focusing on those which were bright and neon as these were popular and recognisable to the decade. Online player and website layout was based around a grid using bright colours based on 80s visuals and design without being too distracting whilst a video would be playing so suitable for the 21st century audience and what they are use to already.
