Brief: Initially this was a competition brief for Hallmark Creative which was to create a pattern or illustration which could be used with cards, wrap, stationary, etc as part of a range called ‘Kool kids’. The target audience was young children and the topic had to be appropriate to this as well as being a unisex design and relevant for birthdays. I later developed this into a screen print project as part of a self initiated print series and gift wrap collection called ‘Sweet celebrations’.

Research: Research looked at popular themes within children’s design and birthdays. One of the common themes was the idea of party food and sweets. Other themes which I looked at included animals and art but settled with the sweets because the visuals which I found were very engaging and colourful, perfect for what the brief asked for. Pattern was also a common theme which worked well with the bright colours in the theme and would work well across gift wrap and stationary, so is an approach I developed.

Concept & ideas: The concept was based around the idea of children’s party food and treats, calling the collection ‘Sweet celebration’. Idea generation looked at sketching suitable sweet characters which could then be traced with the pen tool to create the digital artwork. I have chosen to go with the concept of character design as this is popular within children’s design but also adds personality and interest to the objects. More engaging for a younger audience.

Competiton submission: This took the form of A4 artwork as the original brief suggested. This however wasn’t successful and mainly due to some colour way issues that appeared when the artwork was uploaded to their site. For the online vote none of the colours were represent correctly and began to look garish. As I still enjoyed the project I decided to expand the brief into another opportunity to screen print and use it as a skill building exercise.

Production: This became a screen printed production as I wanted to build up some skills within screen print but also found this the easiest way to sort out the colours on the artwork, by seeing them practically printed from the same design and altered with each new pull. I decided on 2 colour because of time management issue but also because I wanted to achieve impact through two strong stand out opposing colours and knew that a third would be created with overlay.
