Brief: This was an external set brief in which former graduate Johnny Packman came in to work with us on a wall mural. This was to be a massive collaborative piece which we had to propose an idea of what we wanted to display as part of promotion of the course in one of the studios and briefing rooms. This was then to be altered and combined with other student ideas into one wall mural which we would all take part in painting.

Research: To begin with we realised what our strengths were as a collective and this was typography and icons. So this formed the basis of our research. We began by looking at existing wall murals which used type within them and noticed that they all used a quite simple hand script approach, which we thought would work perfectly with Hannah’s style. We also noticed that within these a mixture of type styles were used so this would work when it came to collaborating our individual styles together into one large piece. Within these existing murals we noticed that quotes are heavily used within them. This worked great with the brief as gave us a strong concept to follow and allowed us to focus on illustrating quotes related to our course. Other elements which we researched was how to illustrate and make the quotes stand out. We found that capitals, underline and block colours were effective but easy ways in which to highlight key words.

Concept & ideas: Our concept was to propose that the wall mural would be a series of quotes related to the course. These would be a mixture of inspirational ones but also key principles of design. Used as a reminder for existing students when sat in the space during briefings but also as a sample of what goes on in the course for those visiting on open days. For idea generation we began by doing are own individual elements so that these could then be brought together in the final proposal. My contribution is shown on this board. I have done a series of key words and quotes in my own hand writing. Looking at ways to illustrate the words and meanings of them, such as with underlining, similar to the research which we found. But I also worked on digitally altering some of Hannah’s script quotes so that they were more cartoon and bold in there appearance to match mine and the other elements which we gathered together. I also began at looking to add colour to the piece to make the words stand out more. This was kept to a minimum so that it could be easily translated with paint on the wall. Orange was chosen as this was contrasting to what was already in the proposed room and matched recent furniture on the corridor.

Production: Once the artwork in the proposal was submitted this was then combined with an overall idea which Jaypee put together. We were in charge of the main type which we then had to pick a suitable quote that would work with the two edges of the room (one depicting graphic design and the other real life). We eventually settled on ‘Embrace the unknown’ which was a saying which Amber had recently said in a briefing and worked well to bridge the void in the middle between the two other elements. This was painted onto the wall by first producing the artwork digitally, then projecting onto the wall and then outlined and painted. The production time of the painting was a few days and a lot of hard work but the final solutions looked great and it was a different and enjoyable experience.
