Women of Sierra Leone - Lee Karen Stow, “Boxer”

“I think, in general, what I would like to communicate is the awful, unavoidable conditions these women face day in, day out, but that there is hope. The hope comes from the women themselves— from within them, through their resilience and belief. They have much to teach us. I am very committed to the cause of women’s rights. I hope my work speaks for all women around the world, from Afghanistan to China, and even those hidden corners of the UK and USA where women are being oppressed, neglected, abused, or controlled in some way. And I also strongly believe that photography, either by me or by the women themselves telling the stories of their own lives, is a powerful tool to advocate for positive change, as well as to express one’s emotions—and, in some cases, earn an income.” — Lee Karen Stow, interviewed by Nancy Middleton
