It has been 100 miles an hour here at Spot North headquarters pulling together our very first issue. It's been a labour of love not only by our team, but also by all the people who have provided their stunning photography for use in the magazine. Thank you, oh generous ones. I fall in love with the North pretty much every day. We live in paradise and I wouldn't be anywhere else in the world. What amazes me though, is that this is one of the worlds most beautiful places yet the number of visitors to the region isn't very high at all. It appears to be a well kept secret. Well, no more! Spot North intends to spread the word. Inside the pages of this magazine you will find inspirational features on top spots in the North of NZ - everywhere North of Auckland Airport. We will showcase these stunning spots in a manner they deserve to be presented in with big format pictures on pages of a quality magazine. We encourage you to get out and explore the north and all the incredible experiences on offer here... and we invite you to come back and share those experiences with other readers of Spot North. First up, we bring you the story of Ben and Caroline's crazy trip from Melbourne to the top of NZ and back. Their journey gives good insight to what the North is all about. We will bring you a true story every issue.

Te Rerenga Wairua is the legendary Cape Reinga - 'Reinga' being the name for 'Underworld' in Maori. 'Te Rerenga Wairua' meaning the leaping-off place of spirits. Both refer to the Maori belief that the cape is the point where the spirits of the dead enter the underworld and it's not uncommon to hear tourists report they sensed it to be a very spriitual place while there. To experience the restless dissension of the colliding seas where the Pacific Ocean and the Tasman Sea meet is one of the many attractions of the top of the north. Kaitaia is the northernmost town of New Zealand and has a rich history dating back to days when it was an old gum digging town.

Far North
Cape Reinga lies at the very tip of the Aupouri Peninsula on the northland, approximately 450kms from Auckland. The road to Cape Reinga turns into a dirt track for the last 18kms of the journey and the lighthouse that stands there is not open to the public, though is still one of the most visited places in New Zealand. It is the place where the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean meet. You can actually see their waves crashing together as you take in the breathtaking views across the vast bodies of water. The lighthouse was built in 1941 and was New Zealand's last manned lighthouse with keepers watching over its operation until 1987. It was a two-keeper station - one of the least accessible lighthouse stations in New Zealand when it was built. So much so that a school was also built there in 1951 for the keepers' children to attend. Over time access was improved and by the mid 1960s the school had closed and the lighthouse was attracting more than 200 visitors a day. Nowadays its operation is automated and monitored remotely.

Below and to the east of the lighthouse is Spirits Bay which, according to Maori legend, is where spirits depart. The spirit is said to climb a pohutukawa tree at the edge of a cliff before travelling across the bay and into the after life, back to the Maori homeland of Hawaiki. The whole area feels very spiritual and as a mark of respect, visitors are requested not to eat or drink while walking on the site. There are other points of interest along the way such as the great Kauri forests with trees upwards of 800 years of age and Ninety-Mile Beach where you can try your hand at sandboarding down the giant dunes. You can hike the Cape Reinga walkway, a 53km circular trail taking in a whole range of landforms as well as giving you the opportunity to witness a huge variety of birdlife. There are campsites but you will need to come prepared with everything you need as this is a very remote area. Cape Reinga is one place in the world you should not miss out on visiting. It is truly breathtaking - one of nature's wonders and somewhere you will remember for a very long time.

A taste of
Kerikeri One trip to Kerikeri uncovered a wealth of talent that will have us return, again and again. by Natalie Davis While browsing the internet for interesting places in Kerikeri, I stumbled across an oasis. There, amongst numerous photos of the well-known Stone Store and Kerikeri Farmers Market was an image that to me, looked more like it was of a resort in Fiji. That was the start of a journey that would put Kerikeri in a new light for me. Our time at Wharepuke was enough to give me the feeling I had been on an overseas vacation. It could be that I was in heaven the second I tasted the food made by Colin at Food at Wharepuke, the restaurant on the grounds. It could have been the serene walk we took through the 5 acres of award winning subtropical gardens. Or perhaps it was the feeling of waking up in
paradise the next morning in our eco-cottage. Without a doubt, I felt a serenity that had been missing from life for a while and I was instantly at peace and rejuvenated. There is more to Wharepuke than meets the eye. The land has been in the same family since 1938 when it was planted with citrus and kiwifruit. Reputably the first land in Kerikeri to be ploughed, it was turned into the beginnings of these grand sub-tropical gardens in 1993 by Robin Booth, a nurseryman and landscape designer. The dream grew and took hold of younger family members and their partners, which eventuated in 1 bedroom, self-contained eco-cottages being built on the grounds to be offered out as accommodation. The entire
set up is a collaboration of talents of the various family members who worked together to build it into what it is today. The cottages are simple, yet comfortably modern and individually decorated by their owners. Special touches are apparent, such as a kitchen bench in one cottage being made from a Kauri log found on the beach some 25 years ago. Handmade prints hang in the bedrooms, made by Mark Graver, husband of Robin’s daughter Tania who both also live on the property and operate an art gallery and a non-toxic printmaking studio at Wharepuke. In the hub of the gardens is an old army barrack, once the Lynfield Hall, which was relocated from Auckland by the army many years

It acted as a recreation room for the gardens but 3 years ago, a collaboration of another sort took place and the old hall is now home to the award winning restaurant Food at Wharepuke, and Chef Colin Ashton. Colin and his wife Rachel have worked and travelled together extensively with an exciting story to tell – Colin has even cooked on tour with Shania Twain and The Red Hot Chilli Peppers. They moved to Kerikeri from Waiheke Island, where Colin worked as head chef at Passage Rock winery. They were on the hunt for their next new venture and had booked into Wharepuke as a place to stay while they looked around the town at other opportunities. So in 2008, they made the move north to create this garden engulfed dining delight. The food Colin creates is nothing short of superb. The menu offers a wide assortment of flavours with many interesting twists and I have to say, the flavours exceeded all my expectations. I can personally recommend the Red Duck Curry. The menu includes many herbs and vegetables grown on the grounds and the produce is always fresh and mostly local. His signature dish is his award winning Kaffir Lime & Lemongrass Panna Cotta. I don’t have a sweet tooth. Well, I didn’t until I tasted that dessert. Pure heaven, yes, I will have one more thanks! Great service and the native surrounds made it all sublime and we will be back, possibly each time we visit Kerikeri.

Tucked away at the top of the gardens is Art at Wharepuke, a gallery which displays works by NZ and international artists. As an art lover, I was very happy with this discovery and even more ecstatic to find that resident artist and printmaker Mark Graver has his non-toxic print studio on site as well. We had a tour of the studio and a brief introduction to the new methods of printing using many natural solutions and inks which are not harmful to the artist or enviroment. It was something more reminicent of a cooking class than a printmaking studio as Mark explained how solutions made of ingredients like lemon and soy sauce take the place of toxic fumes and burning acids in his studio. This is something available to any visitor to Wharepuke and those with a keen interest in art can even book into a workshop either as part of a group or one-on-one. In June of 2010, Mark was the recipient of the first prize at the Lessedra World Art Print exhibition in Bulgaria. He lectures and teaches extensively, so guests are really in for a treat when they visit his studio. www.wharepuke.co.nz
Last but not least on our travels (actually I spent 3 hours there) we dove into the make up of Living Nature. I’d heard so much about this place and how great their 100% natural skincare products are that I had to visit. If you do nothing else in Kerikeri, you must pick up one of Living Nature’s divine handmade soaps. They turn the humble shower into a pampering session as they smell incredible. All of Living Nature’s nature based products smell amazing and their instore representative is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to what goes into the products and the benefits that these natural ingredients have. The science behind this brand is impressive and they are right up there with the best of them worldwide. In some cases better. Factory tours are also available, as are the heavenly treatments at the Living Nature Spa. Great for going to with a group of girlfriends for an afternoon of pampering. Making the trip to the Bay of Islands will be well worth your while, especially during the months from April to June when dolphins tend to be the most plentiful. Depending on what you are more interested in (and how cold the water is) there are several options for finding your perfect dolphin experience. Whether you take a kayak tour to get up close to the dolphin pods or have them sandwich you on your paddleboard to keep an eye on you, there are great ways to get close encounters with these exceptional marine creatures. If you want to really rub noses with these underwater delights, take the plunge into the clear waters with a swimming with the dolphins experience. Fortunately the dolphins are largely bountiful in this beautiful area so the chase is not neccessarily a dilemma. However, as with any naturally habitated species, their predictability isn’t
always insync with our human desires. Depending on the water conditions, their mating cycle, young and other factors, there is always the possibility that fewer will surface to play so it is worth staying around for a few days to get the conditions just right for your dolphin encounter. As with most things, it is a matter of being in the right place at the right time. Coastal Kayakers is one of the Bay of Island’s hire and tour outlets. You can hire kayaks independently, join a group for a day tour or do an overnight experience into the waters of the bay. If you have the time, a one or two night tour is well worth it with everything included; all you need to bring is your sense of adventure. Dolphins love being the centre of attention so kayaking, sailing and snorkelling is bound to bring the dolphins out to play which is what this adventure is all about.

A mere 1 hour 45 minutes drive from Auckland, Whangarei is not your typical main city as it still maintains its small town charm. With a big cafe culture for its size, it's a great place to stop for a coffee, something to eat and take a stroll through town to the quaint marina in the Town Basin. While Whangarei has a good number of retail shops, it's a place where local shop owners prefer to spend their weekends out on the water or at the beach, so you'll find many (but not all) shops will be closed on Sunday. It seems that as soon as the clock strikes 5 on Friday, the locals head to the beach to enjoy living here in the north. Maybe they have their priorities right! There is more to Whangarei than most people realise. There is easy access to many bushwalks and picnic areas by streams or a waterfall - Whangarei Falls. You could be getting up close and personal with the lions at Zion Lion Park, packing your surf board for a ride at Ocean Beach or Patau North or getting ready to sky jump out of a plane, or perhaps fly a plane yourself! Whangarei Heads is a well kept secret sanctuary, a nature lovers playground in itself and a short 30kms up the peninsula from town. Here you will find a marine reserve, many bays and coves to explore, grand mountains to walk up or climb and some Maori history of why the mountains came to be the way they are. If you are need of some relaxation and rejuvenation, this place is ideal.

Whangarei Heads peninsula has a delightful series of bays and coves culminating at Ocean Beach, a popular surfers break with a regularly monitored lifeguard station and a great place to take kids, family and friends.
Aubery and Bream Head. It is these three peaks which form the iconic view of Whangarei Heads seen as you travel North over the Brynderwyn Hills on State Highway One.
The major drawcard for the area is the spectacular scenery. Visitors are often awestruck and those from as close as Auckland remark that they never even knew it existed. It has long been something of a hidden gem despite its natural beauty. From its coastline, the land rises to a series of rugged volcanic peaks, featuring Mount Manaia, Mount
The scenery doesn’t stop on top of the land. The Heads also has its own marine reserve with spectacular displays to be seen under the water as well. You can charter a dive boat and head out the the Hen and Chicks, perhaps even get in a spot of the fantastic fishing out this way. The beaches to visit that top the list are Ocean Beach, Pataua North and Pataua South. Pataua North is accessible by way of a bridge which is popular with kids for jumping off. Further round is Kauri Mountain with a long, sleek stretch of beach usually next to empty and it’s possible that you could see dolphins playing here in the waves. I have and they were only a couple of metres away from me. Very special. The bays and coves of the Whangarei Heads are well utilised by boats and for water activities. Many moorings can be seen with sailing yachts tied up to them. There is a local kayak hire company for anyone keen to paddle around the bays and check out the boats and the scenery. As for accommodation, you’ll find plenty of options to choose from. Many local houses are holiday homes and available for short term rental via online listing sites. There are also Bed & Breakfasts of varying standards as well as some units and camping sites. One stand-out place to stay also offer a tour service, and if their reputation is anything to go by from reading
their long, long list of positive comments from happy guests, Flutes Accommodation should be top of your list. Each guest comments on what excellent hosts they are. Flutes is a luxury Bed and Breakfast located in McLeod Bay run by Kay and Andy Mears who fell in love with the area a few years ago and now promote the area. At Flutes, you have your choice of a large room with walk-in wardrobe, full bathroom, conservatory and a sun deck complete with million dollar views, your own Pukekos, rabbits and the occasional seagull – or you may prefer the completely self-contained splitlevel apartment which is very modern, sleeps 4 guests, has its own entrance, bathroom and full kitchen for self-catering. Goodness knows why you would want to feed yourself though. Kay is reportedly a superb cook and her homemade chocolates are melt in your mouth delicious. I know... I’ve tried them! When you are ready to check out the local scene, you can head to the Parua Bay Tavern for a drink and a game of pool. At the tavern, you can sit looking out

over the water either on the sheltered dining with glass balcony, on the deck outside with shade umbrellas or down by the water on a more typical Kiwi picnic bench. Those keen on the horses can have a flutter on the TAB here also. For a bit of local culture, there are several artists in residence in the area including well known artist Douglas Chowns. The Parua Bay Art Gallery is a great place to visit and check out all sorts of artworks from the area and New Zealand in general. So if you want to relax and recharge your energy, tackle a few of walks from the easy to the most challenging, go for a snorkel, hang at the beach or get out on the water, then “head for the Heads�. These cats are a family in every sense of the word and spending some time up close with the them and their “cub girl” Megan is all it takes to see how close they are. The white female lions preen and groom each other just like sisters do and the namesake of the park, “Zion" is reminiscent of a one-time rockstar who has had his time in the spotlight and now just wants to chill in the sun. While some of the cats are wild and have come to live at Zion through a need to be protected, others have been bred at the park and hand reared by Megan. They are her babies, yet as close as she gets to them, a level of distance must remain. After all, you can

No, IT’S NOT THE SET OF NARNIA but it’s just as beautiful - the north’s landscape is an ideal environment for the cats take the cat out of the wild but the visitors and it's just as well. It is easy you can't take the wild out of the to feel so comfortable and affectionate cat! The park is a wonderful way to towards these big cats, that if it wasn't for get close to these incredible creatures. Unlike a typical zoo, where enclosures are distant and the animals often metres away, at Zion Wildlife Gardens you walk through enclosures which feel more like sectioned off forest and you stand just over a metre away. Some cats approach you happily, and their playful characteristics appear to be just like that of the domestic house cat. The way they preen, play with toys and communicate with you makes them seem very tame. But, rules apply while guests walk through the park to protect the cats and
the staff reminding you that they're wild at heart, you might be tempted to get a little too close. The ability to be this close to these animals and feel a connection with them, even for a short time, well - it's something that will stay with you forever. You can do a standard tour of the park or for a truly spectacular experience, Zion Wildlife Park offer visitors a "Cheetah Chat” which literally puts you in with the Cheetahs - something I will never forget and one of the best experiences of my life. These cats are nothing short of amazing and well worth a visit.

If you'd rather explore the beach on wheels, it is the longest driveable beach in the country extending over 100km which stretches from Kaipara Harbour right up to Maunganui Bluff. At Ripiro's entrance at Pouto Point you can immerse yourselves in history, legends and stories of around 150 shipwrecks and visit the eeiry Pouto lighthouse. The beach is also a great place to go horse riding, trekking along the beaches and up hills to get spectacular views of the lengthy beach below. For a slightly different experience, one of the popular things to do on the West Coast is go Sand Surfing. There are massive sand dunes to fling yourself down for unbelievable fun!

WHATIPU: Not a swimmers haven but conservationists dream, Whatipu is owned by the Department of Conservation because of its coastal dunes and wetlands that provides the perfect breeding ground for some of New Zealand’s endangered species.

RIPIRO BEACH: Ripiro Beach is somewhat of an adventure in itself with a 100km long sandy playground great for 4x4 fun, horse riding and even shipwreck exploring around the Pouto Lighthouse. BAYLYS BEACH: For surf lessons, quad adventures and horse experiences, Baylys is a typical West Coast beach with rough seas and often wild conditions. Catch Baylys beach on a good day and you will see just how photogenic it can be.

HOKIANGA: From Hokianga’s North Head dune summit, find a limitless panorama of the coastline and Tasman Sea. Slide down to the Hokianga Harbour guarded by two Taniwha and spot the many sculpture formations and deep canyons that makes this beach one of the more distinct among the West Coast.

Plundering their own version of pirate’s treasure, anglers can be found dotted along the Kaipara Harbour fishing up Snapper, Kingfish and Kahawai at an amazing rate. But buried miles underneath their feet is a treasure of a different kind. by Lucy Mullinger The Kaipara Coast is the longest shoreline harbour in the Southern Hemisphere, it is also the most dangerous. Underneath the heaving sand-dunes is a ship-wreck graveyard, which some believe hold secrets that could potentially change the history books forever. Over 200 ship-wrecks have been found along the coastline, with 160 of those identified through careful research from supporters of the Dargaville Museum. Local shipwreck historian Noel Hilliam has helped locate many of the wrecks along the coast. He doesn’t leave the house without his trusty metal detector and has spent a lot of money and time on uncovering the harbour’s dark secrets. His most important find is the French corvette L’Alcmene which was wrecked off Ripiro Beach in June 1851. 192 people survived the wreck and were rescued by local Maori, however twelve members of the crew sadly drowned with the ship. The Dargaville Museum now houses the anchor, cannons, bottles of wine and buckles found amongst the wreckage. Hilliam preserves his bigger finds with a chemical tank that he keeps on his property. Without preserving the relics, most will just fall to pieces when they are moved. “If you don’t have the correct preserving techniques, you might as well just leave it on the beach,” he says. The treatment tank is located on his farm only a few kilometres away from the beach and a stones throw from the museum. He currently has an 189-year-old carronade (naval mortar which lobs explosive shells at enemy ships) and an anchor sitting in the treatment tank.

The carronade was kept in a treatment tank for six years. During the first six months it was allowed to soak in fresh water, in order to soak the salt out, then the water was replaced with sodium hydroxide and a small electric charge was sent through it to protect it from deterioration. Hilliam believes there are wrecks underneath the sand which may predate Abel Tasman arrival in 1642 (supposedly the earliest European to set foot in New Zealand). Over twenty years ago, Hilliam was flying over the harbour when he glimpsed what he believes was a Spanish Caravel wreck. Unfortunately he didn’t have a camera with him, so he drew a picture of what he had seen and sent it off to be identified. He was told it looked a lot like the San Lesmes, a ship which disappeared in the Pacific in 1526. 22 of the 53 crew listed on the caravel came from a Spanish Town called Aranga, the same name as a Northland area in the Kaipara.
“If we can locate the wreck this could change the history books forever,” says Hilliam.

Although he never gave a reason behind the name, it is said that after a gruelling trip across the seas, the famished Captain Cook looked at the islands and decided they reminded him of an old English dish, the Poor Knights pudding. Cook arrived in 1769 by which time the islands were inhabited by local Maori tribes. Although Cook might have been hungry, the inhabitants of the island were well cared for with an abundance of sea birds, well kept gardens and schools of fish to feast upon. The Ngatiwai tribe lived on Tawhiti Rahi during the summer and Aorangi Island was home to the Ngati Toki people who lived there all year around. In 1820, Chief Tatua left the islands to participa te in a fighting expedition to the Hauraki Gulf. An Aorangi slave named Paha managed to escape and warn an enemy of Tatua, Chief Waikato that the island was unp rotected. Chief Waikato and his warriors made the 320 km journey to the Poor Knights and took over the island, killing most of the inhabitants. On his arrival back to the islands Tatua gathered the survivors and left the island neve r to return. He declared the islands tapu (sacred). The islands ha ve remained uninhabited ever since and in 1981, the ocean surrounding the Poor Knights Islands, off the East Coast of Northland was established as a marine reserve. Flora and fauna thrive on the island due to a condition called "island gigantism". Insects and plants on the island are larger than their mainland relatives and survive for longer thanks to the eradication of mainland pests. Amongst the large leaves, New Zealand's very own prehistoric

lizard, the tuatara makes it's nest in burr ows along the cliffs. The burrows are home to the Bullers Shearwater, a bird which is endemic to the islands. It returns to the same burrow every year after migrating from the Arctic Circle to breed. The tuatara guards both sets of eggs during the day whilst the Bullers Shearwater is at sea feeding. A relationship of this kind cannot be found anywhere else in the country. The island also boasts one of the biggest underwater caves in the world. Rikoriko Cave is a safe haven for bright coloured sponges and kelp forests along the underwater walls and archways. Squadrons of stingrays can be found patrolling the cave during warmer months alongside turtles, manta rays
and the occasional Humpback Whale. Over 125 species of fish share this environment from the more common snapper through to the tropical rainbow fish. Many of these fish will fall in love with the reserve and settle on the reef permanently. Named one of the top ten diving spots in the world by French diving pioneer Jacques Cousteau, these islands are a wondrous example of how nature can re-establish itself very quickly once the threat of humans and animals are eliminated.

45 minutes north of Whangarei is a popular holiday destination called Oakura Bay, an east facing beach which is sheltered from ocean swells by several surrounding islands. The beach is a popular destination for Aucklanders escaping for extended vacations of long weekends. It also has a fairly decent number of permanent residents, some of whom commute to Whangarei City or further north for work. The beach is a generous strip of white sand trimmed with
holiday homes and it acts as a gateway to the beautiful Whangaruru Harbour - a boaties paradise with good spots for fishing, diving and collecting shelfish. There are several rock pools and islands which can be accessed from Oakura by foot. Some require you to get a little wet before you'll reach your destination and it's wise to take some sound shoes for walking on the rocks. The walk around to the Mermaid Pool (our
made up name for it as we couldn’t find anyone who knew if it had a given name or not) takes about 15 - 20 minutes depending on your pace. Its location seems to be a well guarded secret however, so for directions you’re best to ask one of the locals you see at the beach. A little exploring around the bays should see you find it before too long and you’ll have all the more fun looking for it. A bit of a tip, it can be very cold even in summer so don’t dip your feet in... just jump!

Matakana is a fine example of a small town renovation thanks to the artistic vision of one of New Zealand’s leading architects, Noel Lane. With its fantastic historical beginnings from the mid 1800’s thanks to its timber resources, the Matakana area fell into the hands of a local investor who bought on board Noel Lane to help realise his aspirations for the current Matakana Village. Their visions together morphed into the final facelift which built on the historical charm and used it to their advantage creating a somewhat quirky result without being too contemporary. Today when you drive into Matakana Village on a Saturday morning you can take a local blueberry ice-cream down to the river, then stroll through the fantastically organic, fresh produce farmer’s market. Sit down at one of the friendly cafes, wander the small boutique stores then relax at the fabulous art deco cinemas. It’s worth seeing a movie just to see the fantastic interior decorating. The design is entire from the exterior asymmetrical domes to the interior cinemas adopting different themes. Flowing fabric brings an exotic and intimate touch to the Roxy cinema, while the Paradiso cinema looks up to over 30,000 floating paper flowers. The Tivoli is the third cinema which is home to the largest bulb chandelier in Australasia with gold decorations and traditional wall coverings. An artistic dream to say the least (main image). Picking blueberries at a local orchard, tasting wines in one of the exquisite wineries and surfing the stunning beach is what Omaha is all about – the next stop on your Tiki tour. The surfy culture verses the elegance of the vines crawling along the rolling hills gives way to a truly unique off-the-beaten-track experience.

Loyal to its historic layout with some of the original stores still standing (although restored somewhat), Warkworth encapsulates what a town should. Wrapped in just a few main streets, Warkworth’s town centre hugs the Mahurangi River making it a beautiful riverside retreat close enough to the big city to be accessible, yet far enough away to maintain its peaceful atmosphere.
Venture further and Leigh arrives at your feet. A less centralised town, Leigh is more about heading to what interests you. Goat Island Reserve is a popular spot for locals and tourists as it is a most spectacular marine reserve where you can snorkel, swim, kayak or take a trip in a glass bottom boat to see the colourful marine life. If the music culture interests you, head to the Leigh Sawmill renowned for its live performances, attracting some of the “big names”.

COSH BAR Cosh Bar is a unique Cocktail Concept Bar. The front main bar is a New York style Cocktail bar, Exposed Brick, candlelit with chilled music and low lighting, perfect for that after dinner Cocktail. The side bar is the mirror of the front bar, but is usually reserved for private functions, which then opens up around 11pm to combine to one large area.
