CONTENT Landscape architecture is an endless learning journey; a complexity that I had the pleasure to enjoy. Space is a very powerful tool as an initiator of change, and it never fails to excite me how landscape design could manipulate spaces into a better environment, not only for people but also for biodiversity and ecology. Designing for me is collecting cultures and translating concept into currated space experiences for people to explore. For the past 4 year, as well as 1 year of landscape part-timing during my last Bachelor year, Landscape architecture has been my great interest; as reflected on my excellent mark. I consider it my own responsibility to make sure I keep growing and learning.

FLOODING ISSUES

Tebet Eco Garden revitalise the neglected and deteriorated Tebet Park into an attractive, WSUD-sensitive, functional & active community park, embracing its new identity as the heart of the city that is ecologically healthy. Tebet Eco Garden aims to connect the city with nature and the people with biodiversity by providing a space to rebuild intimate relationship between one another.

TEBET PARK

DAMAGED PATHWAY

Tebet Park, the only remaining 7-hectare large green space in downtown South Jakarta, was left in the state of disrepair with numerous unhealthy trees and broken drainage after it was renovated in 20xx. In addition, Tebet Park topology makes it highly susceptible to flooding and it was evident the canalized waterway cannot manage to sustain the issues. To resolve this issue, together with the local community, Jakarta Park, and Forestry City government, Siura Studio collaborated with Studio Sae on re-envisioning and revitalizing Tebet Park into Tebet Eco Garden. The design focused on utilizing landscape approaches to revitalize and upgrade the ecological, recreational, educational, and social value of Tebet Eco Garden to meet both the community and ecological needs of the surrounding site. It also plays a part on reconnecting the community to the cultural history of Tebet. On micro level, ecological restoration, canal naturalization and landscape renovation are done. Various landscape programmes create different settings or scenes that allows visitors to have unique varying experiences as they explore and walk through the educational park. As much tree as possible is retained. The diverse native species are used for its low maintenance, and will be kept on natural succession through time to raise sustainability. On a macro level, Tebet Eco Garden revives the major pedestrian connections to improve circulation accessibility on a city-wide impact.

The once highly polluted and channelized waterway will be transformed back into an active waterway with the use of vegetation and natural embankments. The naturalisation would enforce Tebet Eco Garden into a sustainable, resilient landscape, as well as a form of flood control not only at the site but is positively impacting the surrounding area.

Complimentary to the naturalized river as a part of ecological infrastructure, wetland retain and filter water by supporting water-loving vegetation and soil. To control domestic floods, meandering bioswale was crafted carefully to expand the water catchment area while still preserving native trees by creating small island mounds. These meandering natural waterway and extensive vegetation planting supports wildlife and in turn will become a resilient habitat. Wetland Garden was designed as a part of a public natural library for people to learn about the river's natural ecosystem and the positive impact it had on the environment. This will raise public environmental awareness on blue-green infrastructure and enables more opportunities for future urban landscape planning. An extensive boardwalk brings up a whole different landscape vista to help people engage with nature and immerse themselves in biophilic environment, while the shelter allows people to take a moment to appreciate the abundance of wellness nature can provide in an urban environment.

As the main play feature in the park, the Children Playground is inspired by the animals that lives in swamp and wetlands habitat. Each of the play elements mimics animal movement and engagement, and translate it into features which encourages the children to hone their balance, speed, coordination, sensitivity, motor and agility skills. The main play elements feature a giant crocodile that kids can climb to and slide from.

An expansive, north-facing green space, is dedicated for community to creates precious opportunities for meaningful encounter through recreation: informal outdoor gathering, plays, and cultural events. The mounding landscape is designed to allow differing levels of intimacy within playful natural boundaries. This functional, activated edge is a start to lead to active use and exploration inside the park. At the Park's South edge, a platform for semi-outdoor public events is built nearby a green space planned for future local community's urban farming area. The communal activities will not only provide useful seasonal crops, but also built up social capital, increase engagements and promote community building. It teaches the public to nurture nature and establishes responsibility & trusts within the community, strengthening sense of belonging. These community-oriented spaces are designed to deeply engaged the natural landscape with the people, creating a new defining, safe, iconic place for public outing.

Located in the Southern waterfron of Singapore, Labrador Park is a nature reserve with a rich history. Berlayer Creeak, a rich mangrove ecosystem, reside in the east side of Labrador Park. “Encounter” hope to craft a landscape that allows people to interact with the visible and invisible ecosystem; letting people encounter animals, water, plants, underwater habitats, and with each other. Inspired by mangrove roots where most interactions happen in-between species, the design aimed to provide different overlapping species habitat in between the design’s roots. The design championed habitat conservation by performing multiple ecosystem services: biodiversity net gain, increased greenery percentage, and enhanced seagrass & rocky shore habitat resilience to the disturbed existing ecosystem. All is executed with minimal nature disturbance while also aiming to increase public awareness by creating play opportunities and adding educative elements.

community garden

In the past, the sudden topology change from kampongs to HDB that causes restlessness held striking similarity on how Covid-19 impacted life; job uncertainity and mental issues. Previously, what help Tampines' residents transitions faster to their new living condition was sharing stories and problems through compassion to their neighbours in the void decks and other public space, healed by the community. The design wanted to create a community park that could foster relationship between Tampines neighborhood through deliberate attempt by providing various urban communal spaces. By borrowing the Tampines' kampong history, the design aimed to strengthen Tampines' identity to raise a sense of belonging and ownership to the residents. The essence and "stills" of kampong life become the guidelines of the site's program.

2020

In contrast of it's surrounding luxury neighbourhood and it's prime Singapore's central business location, Jalan Kukoh precinct houses Singapore's lowest-income families in often cramped and overcrowded rental flats. Not only the hilly location’s causing Kukoh's residents to feel segregated from the rest of Singapore, the non-optimal, poor living environment and bad reputation of Kukoh neighborhood reflect badly on the resident’s psychology; affecting their relationship, health, and children development. Crescent @ Kukoh Precinct wanted to explore landscape as a catalyst for urban change, creating a healing, productive urban fabric; bringing a better quality of life for all.

Jalan Kukoh, York Hill, and Jalan Minyak is streets where several public rental blocks are located.

1

The nonchalant environment negatively impacted residents' sense of reality and identity, extinguishing the resident's hope to move up the social ladder. It also held a bad reputation among the rest of Singapore, bringing shame to the residents.

6

5

The living environment designed wasn't optimal and livable, it failed to create a conducive environment for the residents to grow; even though the government expect the residents to be self-reliant.

MAXWELL MRT

The proposed design is sustainable not only environmentally, but also is a sustainable integrated process of economic, social, ecological, and wellbeing. Advocating not only facilitating for the enlighten and learning activities of the resident, but also commercial activities in a bid to increase employment opportunities. Crescent itself means growing, increasing, and developing, something that the design proposal wished for the residents. AWARD WON

Jalan Kukoh is located in the Central Business District and surrounded by various MRT. However, the surrounding luxurious building only amplified the spatial inequality of Kukoh’s residents. Lack of design consideration of qualitative living conditions bring a sense of conflict and imbalance within the area, resulting in hostility and a segregated environment.

CHINATOWN MRT

Responding to the site's physical and psychological issues, the design tried to achieve its framework plan by 4 strategies: identify, subdivision, linkage, and expansion. To achieve a liveable neighbourhood, the design took inspiration from nature in a bid to help the residents to become resilient, just like how plants are able to grow steady even in a hostile environment. Thus, the design is zoned into 4: roots courtyard, flower courtyard, trunk courtyard, and leaf courtyard; which each have their own private function.

WORK PROJECT @ SIURA STUDIO

`

2020-2021

About SIURA Studio SIURA is an urban design and landscape architecture planning studio based in Singapore. The studio focuses on urban resilience and innovative landscape with integrated natural systems. The design process is guided by the story telling of site context, user’s requirement, and broader environmental design. Integration of urban design / landscape with resilient water and ecological design is the core of the practice. Each site and project context is unique. SIURA aims to create unique design solution based on story telling from concept design stage. The innovative design approach offers both functional and aesthetic design that benefits owner, user, community, city and the broader environment.

During my time in Siura Studio, I am involved and exposed to various design stages from concept work to implementation in projects such as Tebet Eco Garden (Jakarta; WSUD, Park revitalization), Taman Sari Equine (Jakarta; Mixed-used development), Subang Smartpolitan (Subang; Landscape Masterplan), Landscape Framework for Rumah Susun at Indonesia New Capital City (IKN), among other notable projects.
