Unit 4: UNCHARTED TERRITORIES 1.0 | Radical Tourism

U nit 4: U ncharted T erritories | R adical T ourism Tourism is a major social phenomenon of modern society. Not being only related to sightseeing and entertainment organisation, contemporary tourism is also a major agent of economic development that represents today one of the largest industries in terms of revenue generation. Large part of the related research tends to capture the concept of ‘tourism’ as a sociocultural phenomenon from wider angles. This can be connected directly with the significance of the associated research in sociology, and thus the most recent evolution of the concept has lately undergone fundamental change following new demand for alternative forms of entertainment.

The unit agenda explores the potential of inhospitable places in offering new models of tourism and land inhabitation while dealing with the related climatic, ecological, and social issues. The investigation looks into creating new paradigms of land transformation and alternative models of land use searching into ideas of adaptability and transitional land occupation as a response to the hostile settings. Based in Iceland, we began by initially looking into the territories of intervention through advanced datamapping methodologies, linking online and on-site data retrieval for the creation of perceptual and notional maps. This set of studies informs the creation of an individual framework: exploring the material, formal and technological implications of unique novel forms of hospitality.
