Enchanted Eden
Millenials are now in conflict with the concept of conflict. In a vociferously outspoken shrinking-world, thoughts of political division and environmental unrest have catalysed the need for a societal void. Minamalistic design, muted earthy colours and materials with a conscience offer an escape from the threats of climate change, urbanisation and pollution. As our oceans drown in 8million tons of plastic, we drown in an inescapable tsunami of headlines. Correspondingly, mental health cases are on the rise, with 16million in the UK alone. This has led to a rejection of our excessive lifestyles; Apple’s ‘screen time’ reminds us to not be consumed by our phones. The natural world fills the void as we disconnect and, as a result, a desire for sustainable produce has escalated. The focus is on individual steps driving great leaps in innovation and change. In 2018, there was a 47% rise in sustainable material word searches, such as organic cotton, sustainable denim, apple leather, cashmere, hemp, linen and wool, suggesting a revival in wasteless, resilient clothing. Brands are collaborating with charities and environmental NGO’s, such as Julian Zigeni and WWF, whilst universities, like the Tel Aviv University, develop sustainable plastics and non-toxic materials.

By putting the world on mute and taking a breath, we are forced to remember we are not machines of destruction on a technology-driven, rapidly deteriorating planet, but are, in fact, a part of it.
