Enchanted Eden
Millenials are now in conflict with the concept of conflict. In a vociferously outspoken shrinking-world, thoughts of political division and environmental unrest have catalysed the need for a societal void. Minamalistic design, muted earthy colours and materials with a conscience offer an escape from the threats of climate change, urbanisation and pollution. As our oceans drown in 8million tons of plastic, we drown in an inescapable tsunami of headlines. Correspondingly, mental health cases are on the rise, with 16million in the UK alone. This has led to a rejection of our excessive lifestyles; Apple’s ‘screen time’ reminds us to not be consumed by our phones. The natural world fills the void as we disconnect and, as a result, a desire for sustainable produce has escalated. The focus is on individual steps driving great leaps in innovation and change. In 2018, there was a 47% rise in sustainable material word searches, such as organic cotton, sustainable denim, apple leather, cashmere, hemp, linen and wool, suggesting a revival in wasteless, resilient clothing. Brands are collaborating with charities and environmental NGO’s, such as Julian Zigeni and WWF, whilst universities, like the Tel Aviv University, develop sustainable plastics and non-toxic materials.

By putting the world on mute and taking a breath, we are forced to remember we are not machines of destruction on a technology-driven, rapidly deteriorating planet, but are, in fact, a part of it.

Heritage-inspired shapes drive this change, with much thought to vintage authenticity. The silhouette is exaggerated with squared off shoulders and flattering corsets that mould the figure. The concentration is not just on experimental fabric design, but also on excessive structures and letting the construction of the pieces show through, once again echoing a return back to basics away from technology. These lines then became angular, making boxy corsets, denim jackets and cropped jeans desirable. Sustainable indigo ink is used in a midwash - darkwash, and is then distressed. There is a contrast between the cool-coloured denim and the arm-toned accents and embellishments. The key is to not shy away from the recycled denim’s frays and rough seams. The trend is to upcycle with a conscience and preserve the characteristics of the fabric with rough cuts, tacky edges, metal fittings, chains, large eyelets and zippers. Ignore denim’s functionality and rebel with all the trimmings.

Wear this oversized, patchworked and layered denim trend with patent sock boots, mini handbags and animal print. Neutral-coloured tulle and the classic white-tee fashioned from sustainable cotton keep the natural world at the forefront of the trend. Ties, Tassels and Corsets remind us of our heritage.
