As a continuation of my studies at Syracuse University shown in Volume I, the following projects reflect on my final semester in the graduate program. They were heavily built on collaboration amongst classmates and celebrate mapping both physically and digitally.

PORTALS THROUGH THE HAZE Spring 2019 // SU Instructor // James Leng, Boghosian Fellow 2018-2019 Collaboration // Class of 11 + J.Leng, COE Project // Accelerated Modernization and The Three Gorges Site // Three Gorges, ROC Role // Prototyping, Physical Model, Exhibition Installation Model // Plaster 15’L x 3’W x 6’H
Concept // “Portals Through the Haze” depicts the impact of accelerated modernization on The Three Gorges in China. The proliferation of built form that colonizes this extreme terrain—from factories to skyscrapers to clusters of villages—makes this geography of modernization equal parts tantalizing and traumatizing. Staged between and through a physical model and a series of photographs—portals to a more fundamental reality—the exhibition encourages the viewer to take the fictional but profoundly realistic perspective found in traditional Chinese landscape painting, one where all scales and all views are experienced simultaneously. By navigating the landscape from the scale of a room to the scale of an entire region, looking into as well as out onto The Three Gorges, it’s only then that such active, simultaneous viewing can reveal what is hidden under, through and beyond the haze.

PATH-FINDING Spring 2019 // SU Instructor // Lawrence Chua Collaboration // Klaus Chen Cui, Stephanie Haller, Bharat Krishnan, Lina Wang Project // Provincializing China scroll, collage Site // Pearl River Delta, ROC Role // Research, Conceptual Design, Digital Modeling, Rendering Programs // Photoshop, Illustrator
Concept // Path-finding through the Pearl River Delta encapsulates the unique history of the region from later imperial to the modern period as a significant economic power. From its start as a farmland, the region traces back its history to the treaty port system from the 1840s and the opium wars with 1 the British. This region underwent the imperial invasion of China (annex of Hong Kong and Macao), Special Economic Reform (Shenzen, Dongguan), and Special Administrative Zone (Hong Kong, Macao) that no other regions in China have experienced over the last century. Being an active business zone of China, the economic significance of this region is more now than 2 ever before. From trading with westerners at treaty ports to oversea Chinese establishing factories in the Mainland, from the world financial center to the tech hub of China, trading and business acted as an important linkage in the region. In creating this scroll map, we aimed to present an intricate network of infrastructure that serves as the backbone of the world’s largest megalopolis. The map captures the topography and architectural representation of 3 the region, both culturally and economically. In the map, five cities were selected, each representing a unique aspect to the region: Macao, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shenzen, and Dongguan. Within these cities, several iconic buildings have been identified across the map that stand out both in historic relation (orange) and modern day (black). An orange line connects each city through trade routes of the region. In the late imperial days, the colonies and Guangzhong were the gateways for importing foreign goods to the rest of China. With the founding of the Special Economic Zone and the return of the colonies, the region became one business entity. Forty years ago the rural lands had a population of 10 million and have seen rapid urban expansion at an exponential rate since. About 70 million people now live in this region, considered the largest megalopolis in the world. The Greater Bay Area project is China’s response to positioning themselves as an economic powerhouse with the megalopolis positioned as a direct rival to the megalopolises of New York, 4 San Francisco and Tokyo.

INTUITIVE MAPPING Spring 2019 // SU Instructor // Mitesh Dixet, asst. Sou Fang Collaboration // Aditya Mehta Project // Atlas Site // Vancouver, Canada Role // Research, Prototyping, Conceptual Design, Mapping, Graphics, Physical Model Programs // ArcGIS, Illustrator
Concept // Through intuitive mapping, we have established economic and political areas of interest in relation to their topographical correspondence, floating in the residential island that is Vancouver. The map to the right sets the contrast between agricultural and residential / urban, using rings of color to identify the core of the population. To the left, the realized model of the map focuses on the interactions of the city. In this instance, the topography is exaggerated through extruding and layering. Each color reflects an abstracted illusion of the densified city, impelled on wire gage to represent the population peaks.
