ARCHITECTURE IS DUALISTIC

IT IS THE WHY/BE/CAUSE OF THE PLACE

IT STARTS IN THE PAST BUT BELONGS TO THE FUTURE IT IS THE EFFORT OF A GENERATION FOR THE PEOPLE AND FOR OURSELVES IT IS A CHOICE TO QUESTION AND A CHANCE TO ANSWER

The essence of a library is knowledge. In ancient times books were treasured and lauded. In the present books are quickly substituted for digital devices, but knowledge is still an important concept in cultures worldwide.

C O M M U N I T Y HETERARCHY Community is the result of cultures that interact. To create these interactions, spaces for the cultivation of knowledge and community must exist. They must actively participate with the environment and function as incubators of culture.

Libraries used to exist in a system of hierarchy. Now, to create interaction within the community, they must exist as a source of knowledge and culture simultaneously. These not only provide different types of knowledge but also create unity within the community. This process is only evident within the interaction of spaces.

The massing of the library originated from the shape of the site and the need for public and private spaces. The massing then responded to the site analysis, creating the final shape of the building.

To interact with the city of Fountain Inn, the library extends to an outdoor space that is visually connected to Main Street.

THEPROBLEM

Clemson University is a spread out campus that is also easily accesible by walking and biking. Many students choose the biking route to attend class. While more students want to take this route, Clemson’s campus was not originally designed to accomodate a high number of bikes.

THEHYBRID

The proposed solution creates a piece of urban furniture that solves both the problem of bike storage and lack of seating. With this new hybrid, the fabric of Clemson supports the move toward sustainability exemplified by its students.

The hybrid is a large puzzle with simple connections. Rods connect the bicycle racks that are sliced from the seating and separated to store bycicles. The seating area is supported by a central piece that connects the body of the seat.

OBSERVATION THROUGH SKETCHING

Taking pictures is easy. But the ability to capture a scene with a pen or a pencil not only engraves the image in your mind, but it forces you to scrutinize details you would have never noticed. Sketching throughout Europe made me realize the importance of hand tools. A quick impression of an image can not only make a beautiful sketch, but also tell you about what you look at and how you look at it.

STUDY ABROAD SKETCHES

WHAT’S NEXT?: THE REGGIO-EMILIA TEACHING APPROACH EXHIBIT The principle of Reggio is to allow children to learn by playing, asking questions, and solving their own problems. What’s Next? allows them to do exactly that. They play in a space where light plays the main role. They see the light throughout the space and they see the way it changes. Without knowing the tilt of the earth and the way it rotates around the sun, the children can begin to understand the concept of sunlight.

A STUDY OF LIGHT CHARLESTON, SC The process that inspired my exhibit and concept started through the simple act of ffolding. The folds created shadows throughout the day and I decided to take advantage of the fold by creating openings in the membrane of the folds. Last, I created a take away piece that can be used outside of the exhibit and also let the children experience the same concept as the exhibit.

My site is located in Charleston, South Carolina at the Children’s Museum of the lowcountry. Since my piece focuses on sunlight and apperture, it is meant to be placed outside where it can receive unflitered and direct sunlight. .

Diagramming, modeling, and sketching along with shadow studies are the best ways to demonstrate how the future concept of ‘apperture’ developed over the course of the project.

the appertures in my exhitbit results from the way is piece is connected to each other. The opaque and transluscent double layer creates and in-between interactive space for the children to play in and experience the way sun light appears during the day.

takeaway

The take away swerves as a piece of the exhibit that is folded using a diagram and taken home by the children. The concept of the take away is the exact same as in the large exhibit, allowing the children to experience ‘apperture’ outside of a museum exhibit.
