This series of conceptual interventions is less about intervening and has more to do with exploring the idea of taking a step back as our first step forward. An interplay or blurring of the role of the ‘professional’ and the role of the ‘amateur’ could be an instrumental way for communities to begin navigating the complexity that confronts them

It’s important to work iteratively back and forth between the abstract (detachment) and the concrete (attachment), individual and collective, local and regional/global. Maintaining and staying stuck in one particular mode will result in a singular type of result.

In Canumay East opportunity exists to turn a dividing space into a productive space. The restrictive space below the power lines could potentially be cleared (incrementally) to create infrastructure for flood water retention and public space. Matina Arroyo could potentially take a communal approach to building a super-structure to raise and connect all houses. Construction could begin in strategic locations, as funds are availabe, to allow informal / temporary structures to be infill between them. West Habog has opprortunities to utilise empty land saturated by flood water. Floating structures could fill these spaces to continuously provide circulation, public space and green space regardless of the water level.

Field Research Report
Baan Mangkong-Secure Housing Program (Bangkok) Weaving Urbanism in Bangkok. Analysis and proposals for CODI’s Baan Mangkok Secure Housing Program. One month of preparation research, two weeks of field research and three weeks of report writing. Collaboration between fifteen other researchers.

Community Design-Build Facilitator Urban & Regional Planning Volunteer
The site work for the park removes earth from the hill creating different levels for different activities; rock walls frame the spaces. Within the areas contained by the rock wall is a level space for a playground and stepped levels for controlled planting. The areas created outside the rock wall are for less controlled planting and leaves the highest ground as a place for sitting, for watching kids at play and viewing the mountains across the valley of Jamastrรกn. The playground structures will touch the ground both inside and outside the walls, reducing them to subtle boundaries, allowing the kids to play freely. Play Structure Plan

Bonnet Carre Spillway - Park Service Facilities BONNET CARRE SPILLWAY - Site Overview
Following the 1927 Mississippi River flood, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers designed and built the Bonnet Carre Spillway to allow complete discharge of water from the Mississippi River into Lake Pontchartrain. The spillway site measures 7,700 feet by 5.7 miles and is located 25 miles west of New Orleans, Louisiana amidst a hot and humid sub-tropical climate. Political and social reasons for the location were essentially to protect the city of New Orleans, (whose port is the third largest in the U.S. and the fourth largest in the world) from complete annihilation.

The control structure regulates the rate of change of the river’s flood waters into the spillway that spans the 7,700 ft. distance between the north and south guide levees. Comprising the structure are massive, six foot concrete weirs supporting seven thousand, ten ft. tall, wooden needles. Immediately adjacent concrete baffles break the force of the turbulent flood waters. Two cranes lift the wooden needles individually over a period of 35 hours to filter the flood water through. Although the batture area between the river and the control structure is flooded six months out of a year the structure is only fully permeated approximately once every eight years in the event of a major flood. When open, the control structure has sustained 350,000 cubic feet per second of water flow.

The control structure marks a threshold between two extreme conditions, the batture and the actual spillway. The topography of the batture stretches from the river to the control structure and is constantly inundated with the Mississippi River’s rich river sediment. This condition creates an extreme rate of change of flora growth. Trees and thick brush grow here at a rapid rate of one inch per day and are just as quickly smothered by the rising river, only to begin anew. The spillway topography, on the other hand, is more static as the control structure only fully opens once every eight years. Here, trees grow to full height and stay that way.

The scenario exists at this key moment where the architecture seeks to frame these extreme conditions and the historical significance of the control structures construction. The architecture attempts to become part of the and its site and provide spaces that allow the inhabitants to experience the changing levels of these extreme conditions. A national park as a recreational facility is fitting here as a stated goal of the National Park Service is to preserve historic sites and events. The National Park Service will also serve to frame the already present recreational activities of the site.
