So many nonprofits have wonderful missions and great aspirations but lack the capacity to follow through with a capital campaign. That’s why we call our clients our “partners,” because we’re completely committed to seeing a project through to the end and we want our partners to do the same.

There doesn’t seem to be a day goes by that a new restaurant is not opening it’s doors in Washington, DC. Our offices at Inscape Publico are located steps from 14th and U Streets, the epicenter of this food renaissance. The abundance of food, drink, and the fraternity with our fellow Washingtonians that these establishments provide has created a wonderful playground for our local communities. What it hasn’t created, however, is a utopian society in which all share in the area’s seemingly endless prosperity. If you navigate South down 14th Street, over the bridge and onto Interstate 395, taking exit 7 towards Shirlington, you’ll wind your way to 2708 Nelson Street and the home of the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC). Inscape Publico was introduced to AFAC and their executive director Charlie Meng and immediately drawn to their mission of providing food assistance to their Arlington, VA neighbors. AFAC distributes food to over 2,000 families (8,000 individuals) per week, allowing these families to remain in their homes, workers can stay on the job, children are ready to learn, and mothers and babies have the nutrition they need.

The design we have generated will allow AFAC to serve more families through an expanded distribution center and create space for additional programing, including food education in their new teaching kitchen. We hope you will join us to celebrate the power of architecture through the lens of Inscape Publico, in support of AFAC’s dedication to providing supplemental groceries to those in need.

The ache for home lives in all of us, the safe place where we can go as we are and not be questioned. - Maya Angelou

As the median home value in Washington, DC creeps upwards toward half a million dollars, the working class, young adults, and the elderly are being priced out of the District neighborhoods they call home. Life in the city provides all of us job opportunities, convenient shopping, affordable transportation, and access to cultural activities. The benefits of living in our Nation’s Capital should be available to all age groups and income brackets. Inscape Publico is teaming with Mi Casa to provide energy efficient and socially responsible housing opportunities for our neighbors whom are ever increasingly being pushed away from family and friends and the communities with which their lives are intertwined. Mi Casa, a nonprofit provider of affordable housing for low and moderate income people in Washington, DC and Baltimore, came to Inscape Publico with the challenge to design a prototype for a low cost, energy efficient home. Our design solution is the eCasa housing prototype, a three bedroom, one and one-half bathroom home that is net zero, meaning the total amount of energy used by the homes on an annual basis will be less than the amount of energy created by the photovoltaics on the roof. The homes will be affordable, anticipated price to be $250,000 compared to $400,000-500,000 for similar market rate housing, and the long term utility costs for the residents will be negligible.
