WHERE TO GO WINE TASTING IN IBIZA

If you are under the impression that Ibiza is all about booze cruises and raves, I’m afraid you have been misled. Without a doubt, the island attracts a party crowd with its world-class DJs and laidback vibe, however there is so much more to this magical island that makes it so magnetic to everybody else – from the hippies to the jetsetters. Whilst social distancing rules keeping the super-clubs closed this season, it’s the perfect time to discover what the other sides to Ibiza really have to offer. With so much to choose from it might just be the best season yet! Here are the top vineyards on the islands of Ibiza to enjoy a day of wine tasting.

Can Rich, San Antonio

The vineyard of Can Rich was established in 1997 on 17 hectares of land in rural San Antonio, using traditional grape varieties such as Monastrell and Malvasía. Since then, Can rich has expanded its offering, specialising in eco-friendly, Ibiza wines using Chardonnay, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. In recent years, Can Rich has also begun to produce and sell Hierbas Ibicencas the famous liquor of the island, as well as olive products and salts, all using only local ingredients.

The friendly vineyard staff welcome small groups for half day tours. You will be taken through the whole production process from vineyard to cellar, completing the experience on the beautiful, flower-strewn outdoor terrace for wine tasting. Enjoy the peace and nature of the island’s countryside whilst sampling the wine, paired carefully with local delicacies such as sheep’s cheese and local gourmet breads.

PLANET NINE

CAN MAYMÓ, SAN MATEO Can Maymó is located in the serene North side of the island, a far cry from the nightclubs and bars of the South. It began as a small familyowned bodega which Antonio Costa modernised and expanded in 1995 to become the successful vineyard it is today.

Located on the estate is also a small petting zoo with goats, donkeys, chickens and sheep, as well as exotic birds and a playground area, making it a perfect day out for the whole family.

The bodgea produces a selection of three red wines, a white wine and a rose, which you will find on the wine list of many local hangouts across the island. The majority of the wines are produced using the native grapes, Malvasía and Monastrell, however more grapes have been introduced in recent years as the vineyard has grown.

IBIZKUS WINES, SANTA GERTRUDIS Founded in 2007 by Laurent Frésard, Ibizkus has since established itself as a leading wine producer in Ibiza. Ibizkus is possibly the most famous Ibiza wine among visitors to the island, known mainly for the extremely light and easy-to-drink rosé which is enjoyed in many a beach club across the island.

Over the past decade, Ibizkus has grown to exploit over 40 hectares of vineyards on Ibiza. However, each season, the harvest is taken to their plant on the main road from Eivissa – Santa Eularia at kilometre 9.5 to be processed. It is here that you can take a guided tour of the distillery or enjoy a tasting.

Make sure to save the glass ‘cork’ of your bottle, as it makes a lovely stopper souvenir for when you get home!
