REFLECTION
This past Spring Quarter, Humberto opened my eyes to the possibilities that could happen through the work of a single project. In the "Design Village" project, Humberto pushed my group to be the best that we could possibly be. Though it started off rough at first, my team eventually got it together, and every day felt more and more fun as the days went on. It was honestly one of my favorite projects the whole year, and my awesome teammates had a lot to do with it. I went in to the "International Dwelling" project feeling like we were finally going to learn about real Architecture for the first time, even though I've been taking Studio for 3 quarters. Doing intensive research, I realized that I suprisingly understood what many of the architects concepts were, and it finally occured to me that I actually had learned so much through these past few months that I've been at Cal Poly, without even realizing it. Through "The Wall" project, Humberto challenged the class to form ideas to build a wall that would be possible to make in real life. At first, I struggled with this project because it was hard to emulate the ideas in my mind into something I could physically make. After failing multiple times without much confidence, I finally felt like I had found the solution to making my project. He asked me "Do you truly believe this would work?" I responded "I'm Positive." He smiled and said "then go build your project." I will always remember this moment because this was when I realized the most important lesson in Architecture, to believe in myself, and I owe it to Humberto for teaching me that. Spring Quarter was definitely my favorite quarter. It seems so surreal to me how my first year of college is finally coming to a close. It feels like just yesterday I was wandering around school, wondering where the Architecture Building was, or walking into class, intimidated by all the new professors and people I haven't met yet. This year brought so many memories and friendships that I wouldn't give up for the world. One quote that really speaks to me about my experience in studio is "The days are long but the years are short." A few weeks into the beginning of the year, I wondered how could I possibly even get through the fall quarter, but here we are now, already done with the first year. The year flew by so quickly. All the blood, sweat, and tears of working through studio gave me experiences that I will cherish for a lifetime. It's great to know that through the pain and struggles, that all the hard work I put in for the past 9 months has paid off. Going into Architecture, I never thought that I was capable of making such things, but with the help of my Professors, Joann, Washington, and Humberto, I've come so far from where I started and I'm proud of myself for making it this far. These past three quarters have defined who I am and molded me into the person I am today, and I am a better man because of it. Though I'm scared for the future, I know I can take on anything life throws at me. I'm ready for the challenge. Goodbye first year. Thanks for everything, I'll definitely miss you. Now on to the next chapter.
