ABOUT THE GUIDE The East Tennessee Local Food Guide is a project of Nourish Knoxville. The guide’s purpose is to provide our community with a comprehensive resource for finding locally grown food. Our region is teeming with many opportunities to connect with the land, your food, and the people who grow it, but we understand it can be difficult to know where to begin. We hope this guide helps you find new sources for locally grown food, visit the places where your food is grown, and discover more ways to incorporate locally grown food into your daily life. This guide will expand each year as we identify additional farmers, producers, grocers, and restaurants seeking to connect with local consumers in our region. By choosing food from these local farms and producers you’ll be preserving jobs, farmland, landscapes, and heritage in East Tennessee.

Wayne Scott was a high school agriculture teacher who dreamed of putting what he taught to practice. Wayne and his wife Mary Lou worked hard for many years and built a very reputable name not only in the strawberry business but also in the tomato business, as well as half runner beans and sweet corn. The strawberries are picked fresh each day and sold at our retail sales stands located from Knoxville to Bristol. The delivery times for our retail sales locations vary due to weather conditions each day.

WILLIS ORCHARD

The Apple Barn really is a barn, built back in 1910 and was part of the farm that the Hicks and Kilpatrick families bought in 1972. We planted our first trees in 1976 and we plant more every year. Our orchard now numbers over 4,000 trees. We added a Cider Room where you can actually watch the variety of juicy sweet and tart apples being pressed into delicious cider in the fall. Return to the Apple Barn, where it all started, and browse among the most enticing and unique array of gift items in the area, many of them themed to the mighty apple! The barn’s General Store features a wide variety of handmade mountain crafts, food items fit to grace a gourmet’s table, home decorations, and collectables. And of course, apples and cider, from which it all began.

We’ve been an orchard for over 80 years. We grow 9 varieties of apples available from our farm stand in season.

U-PICKS U-pick farms invite you into their fields to harvest your own fruits and vegetables. That’s right, they let you do the picking—you or u, however you like to spell it! In East Tennessee, you’ll find an opportunity to pick all season: berries in the spring and summer, apples and peaches in the summer and fall, pumpkins in time for Halloween, and more. Visiting a u-pick is about more than filling up a basket with the fruits of your labor. You can reconnect with the source of your food—you can see your produce growing, meet your farmers, and travel the same road your food travels to the farmers’ market or grocery. Remember, it’s always a good idea to call the farm ahead of time to make sure they’ve got plenty of the produce you’re after.

CSA PROGRAMS CSA stands for “Community Supported Agriculture.” As a CSA farm share member, you pay the farmer in advance for “shares” of the season’s bounty, literally giving the farmer “seed money” at the beginning of the season. Then, you get to enjoy a steady supply of foods straight from the farm, from fruits and vegetables to meats and prepared food items. CSA subscribers say that being a farm share member is a little like celebrating a holiday every week. Typically, there is a box to open, and there are always many farm-fresh surprises. The farms make deliveries to designated locations, such as a farmers’ market, a school or neighborhood center, or a CSA member’s home. The typical CSA season corresponds with the outdoor growing season: May to October, but some also offer winter CSAs or meat and dairy CSAs year-round. Contact the listed farms to find a CSA program that is right for you.

RESTAURANTS & FOOD TRUCKS Local ingredients are finding their way onto the menus of restaurants and food trucks in our region. Some are finding ways of incorporating them into their specials or existing menus, and some are “farm-to-table”, meaning they base their menu off of seasonal availability, perhaps even raising the meat and produce they use. Next time you’re dining out, don’t just ask for the specials. Ask: “What’s local today?” Notice a restaurant listed without an address? That’s because they’re a food truck, or a restaurant on wheels! WINERIES & DISTILLERIES One way you can enjoy local flavors is by popping a cork or twisting a bottle cap. An increasing number of wineries and distilleries are cropping up in our area, demonstrating delicious ways to preserve fruits and grains. Some wineries are growing the fruit themselves, and many others are using Tennessee grown fruit. Some distilleries are using locally grown grains, as well as local herbs or other products to create distinct flavors. Want to see how these libations are made? Many of these makers are just a short drive away and open for tours and tastings. Per Tennessee law, a Farm Winery can offer tastings and sales of wine that is produced using 95% or more of their own fruit. Farm Wineries, however, do not bottle their own wine; they contract with a regular winery in Tennessee to make and bottle the wine. Some states, such as New York, refer to farm wineries as “Estate Wineries.” These wineries are designated with a wine glass symbol and may only be open seasonally, so be sure to call before heading out.

Hamblen County NOLICHUCKY VINEYARD

nolichuckyvineyard.com 423-586-8889 6600 Fish Hatchery Rd, Russellville Nolichucky Vineyard was once a tobacco farm located adjacent to the beautiful Nolichucky River, but in 2007 our family decided to plant our first vines in this rich river bottom soil that included: Riesling, Stuben, Traminette, Catawba, Concord, and Muscadine Grapes. These grapes are commercially grown and sold to several local area wineries. Upon passage of the Farm Winery Bill, we were able to contract with a commercial winery to custom crush wine from our farm-grown fruit. The Grape Barn opened July 2012 as the FIRST LICENSED FARM WINERY in the State of Tennessee. Our Tasting Room is now open and we have several different wines for your tasting pleasure.

KNOX COUNTY SOIL CONSERVATION DISTRICT

KNOXVILLE PERMACULTURE GUILD knoxvillepermacultureguild.org

The Guild is a network of individuals and groups that come together to share, experiment with, and build good ideas that will help our community adapt and thrive during the emerging energy-descent era. Every one of us has skills and experience to share, and anyone can host an event. We only ask that it be ‘permaculture related’ and that you take the time to research a bit beforehand on what that means. Permaculture comes out of the study of the energy and resource decline that humanity is facing in the coming decades, and how best to react to these challenges. By studying long-running cultures and by observing the dynamics of ‘nature’, general guiding principles can be distilled that can help us design good systems that will help us meet human needs through the emerging energy descent. So, at its heart, permaculture is a design science of constructing smart systems that will fill human needs in the ‘low energy’ future.
