About The Guide The East Tennessee Local Food Guide is a project of Nourish Knoxville. The purpose of the guide is to provide consumers in our community with a comprehensive resource for finding locally-grown food. Our region is teeming with opportunities to connect with the land, your food, and the people who grow it, but it can be difficult to know where to begin. We hope this guide helps you to find new sources for locally-grown food and to visit the places where your food is grown. By choosing food from local farms and producers you’ll be preserving jobs, farmland, landscapes, and heritage in East Tennessee.

Knoxville Food Shed A foodshed is the area in which food is both produced and eaten. The term describes a region where food flows from the area that it is produced to the place where it is consumed, including the land it grows on, the route it travels, the markets it passes through, and the tables it ends up on. The Knoxville Foodshed, for the purposes of this guide, is defined by a radius around the city center where farmers find Knoxville to be the nearest large metropolitan area to sell their products. The Foodshed encompasses 28 counties within Central East Tennessee.

U-Picks

-pick farms invite you into their fields to harvest your own fruits and vegetables. That’s right, they let you do the picking—you or u, however you like to spell it! In East Tennessee, you’ll find an opportunity to pick all season: berries in the spring and summer, apples and peaches in the summer and fall, pumpkins in time for Halloween, and more.

re-connect with the source of your food—you can see your produce growing, meet your farmers, and travel the same road your food travels to the farmers’ market or grocery. Remember, it’s always a good idea to call the farm ahead of time to make sure they’ve got plenty of the produce you’re after.

Visiting a u-pick is about more than filling up a basket with the fruits of your labor. You can

CSA PROGRAMS

SA stands for “Community Supported Agriculture.” As a CSA farm share member, you pay the farmer in advance for “shares” of the season’s bounty, literally giving the farmer “seed money” at the beginning of the season. Then, you get to enjoy a steady supply of foods straight from the farm, from fruits and vegetables to meats and prepared food items. CSA subscribers say that being a farm share member is a little like celebrating a holiday every

week. Usually, there is a box to open, and there are always many farm-fresh surprises. The farms make deliveries to designated locations, such as a farmers’ market, a school or neighborhood center, or a CSA member’s home. The typical CSA season corresponds with the outdoor growing season: May to October, but some also offer winter CSAs or meat and dairy CSAs year-round. Contact the listed farms to find a CSA program that is right for you.

heartplace@peoplepc.com (423) 784-3401 255 Terry Creek Ln, Pioneer

We believe that a CSA is a collaboration between the farmer and the consumer; thus, you will be able to select the items that make up your basket. Each week after harvest, we will send you an email with a list of available produce items. When you come to market to pick up your share, just bring us a list of what you wish to have and we will fill your order. Some items will be available on a first-come, firstserve basis, but the seasonally-abundant vegetables will be available to everyone. We offer both full and half shares. A full share feeds a family of four or two vegetarians, easily fills up a half-bushel basket, and contains 10-14 different items. A half share feeds two people or one vegetarian. The season runs from midMay - late-October.

My shares are variable and interactive. You choose from an availability list each week of what and how much you want. A printout showing the discount and balance of your account comes with each pickup. Pickups fi t your schedule: skip the weeks that you are on vacation, out of town, or do not need anything on the list. Shares begin as low as $200. Ask for more details. The market style option provides a greater diversity of produce and fl exibility than what is typically found in a traditional CSA share, with members being able to take what they love and leave what they don’t. Staples, like kale and squash, and abundant seasonal items, like tomatoes, will almost always be available as choices when in season. Farmers’ MARKETS

armers’ markets are the perfect community experience: a chance to talk with farmers, meet neighbors, and try new foods, all while feeling confident you are investing your dollars directly in your community. Visit weekly to shop with the seasons for freshly picked fruits and vegetables, meats, dairy, artisanal foods, plants, grains, and more. CREDIT AND EBT:

Several area farmers’ markets accept credit, debit, or EBT cards, making shopping just as convenient as the grocery store. In this section, markets that have the EBT symbol underneath their listing accept SNAP benefits market-wide by swiping cards at a centralized location. Typically, customers swipe their EBT card at the onsite market booth and receive tokens for their desired amount. These tokens are then spent on any SNAP eligible foods throughout the market.
