ABOUT THE GUIDE The East Tennessee Local Food Guide is a project of Nourish Knoxville. The guide’s purpose is to provide our community with a comprehensive resource for finding locally-grown food. Our region is teeming with many opportunities to connect with the land, your food, and the people who grow it, but we understand it can be difficult to know where to begin. We hope this guide helps you find new sources for locally-grown food, visit the places where your food is grown, and discover more ways to incorporate locally grown food into your daily life. This guide will expand each year as we identify additional farmers, producers, grocers, and restaurants seeking to connect with local consumers in our region. By choosing food from these local farms and producers you’ll be preserving jobs, farmland, landscapes, and heritage in East Tennessee.

KNOXVILLE FOOD SHED A foodshed is the area in which food is both produced and eaten. The term describes a region where food flows from the area that it is produced to the place where it is consumed, including the land it grows on, the route it travels, the markets it passes through, and the tables it ends up on. The Knoxville Foodshed, for the purposes of this guide, is defined by a radius around the city center where farmers find Knoxville to be the nearest large metropolitan area to sell their products. The Foodshed encompasses 28 counties within Tennessee.

U-PICKS U-pick farms invite you into their fields to harvest your own fruits and vegetables. That’s right, they let you do the picking—you or u, however you like to spell it! In East Tennessee, you’ll find an opportunity to pick all season: berries in the spring and summer, apples and peaches in the summer and fall, pumpkins in time for Halloween, and more. Visiting a u-pick is about more than filling up a basket with the fruits of your labor. You can reconnect with the source of your food—you can see your produce growing, meet your farmers, and travel the same road your food travels to the farmers’ market or grocery. Remember, it’s always a good idea to call the farm ahead of time to make sure they’ve got plenty of the produce you’re after.

CSA PROGRAMS CSA stands for “Community Supported Agriculture.” As a CSA farm share member, you pay the farmer in advance for “shares” of the season’s bounty, literally giving the farmer “seed money” at the beginning of the season. Then, you get to enjoy a steady supply of foods straight from the farm, from fruits and vegetables to meats and prepared food items. CSA subscribers say that being a farm share member is a little like celebrating a holiday every week. Usually, there is a box to open, and there are always many farm-fresh surprises. The farms make deliveries to designated locations, such as a farmers’ market, a school or neighborhood center, or a CSA member’s home. The typical CSA season corresponds with the outdoor growing season: May to October, but some also offer winter CSAs or meat and dairy CSAs year-round. Contact the listed farms to find a CSA program that is right for you.

We believe that a CSA is a collaboration between the farmer and the consumer; thus, you will be able to select the items that make up your basket. Each week after harvest, we will send you an email with a list of available produce items. When you come to market to pick up your share, just bring us a list of what you wish to have. Some items will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, but the seasonally abundant vegetables will be available to everyone. It makes receiving a CSA share more like grocery shopping, except with all local produce.

We are an artisan farm specializing in providing health and environmentally conscious produce, herbs, flowers, honey, animal shares, and other locally produced products. We offer heirloom tomato plants, farm education classes, outdoor yoga, and CSA memberships throughout the growing season. We also grow specialty produce upon request.

Pick up locations: Determined based on our members’ geographical locations. We serve Claiborne and Union Counties.

Herb and Plow networks with an Amish and Mennonite farmer who farm with the same high standards that we do. Greene County RIVER HOUSE FARM

eatinggreeneville.com melissarebholz@gmail.com 781-387-7530 Greeneville We are growing over 250 varieties of vegetables, fruits, flowers, and herbs. Each week the basket contains a selection of roughly 6-8 seasonal items. Organic farming can have its ups and downs. That’s the beauty of eating seasonally. We might lose a specific type of kale to harlequin bugs or aphids but at the same time we may have an incredible bumper crop of sweet red peppers or cherry tomatoes. We strive for each weekly basket to represent the vibrancy of the season, offering raw leafy greens alongside dense cooking greens, root vegetables among flowering herbs, savory and sweet nightshades among crisp cucurbits.

FARMERS’ MARKETS Farmers’ markets are the perfect community experience: a chance to talk with farmers, meet neighbors, and try new foods, all while feeling confident you are investing your dollars directly in your community. Visit weekly to shop with the seasons for freshly picked fruits and vegetables, meats, dairy, artisanal foods, plants, grains, and more. CREDIT AND EBT: Several area farmers’ markets accept credit, debit, or SNAP cards, making shopping just as convenient as the grocery store. In this section, markets that have the EBT symbol underneath their listing accept SNAP benefits market-wide by swiping cards at a centralized location. Typically, customers swipe their EBT card at the on-site market booth and receive tokens for their desired amount. These tokens are then spent on any SNAP eligible foods throughout the market.

RESTAURANTS, CAFES, & FOOD TRUCKS Local ingredients are finding their way onto the menus in our region. Whether incorporating them into an existing menu and specials or creating menus based on what is seasonally available, the establishments listed in this section use ingredients grown on local farms. When you visit, be sure to ask, “What’s local today?” You’ll also notice the snail icon on some listings. We have partnered with Slow Food Tennessee Valley to designate establishments in their Snail of Approval program. The snail icon designates local restaurants and food businesses that exemplify the principles of Slow Food and contribute to the quality, authenticity, and sustainability of food in our community. All show commitment to the three basic Slow Food principles: good, clean, and fair. Recipients must use local, seasonal foods and must be good stewards in the environment which we live. Notice a restaurant listed without an address? That’s because they’re mobile, serving meals from a truck, trailer, or cart. Visit their websites or social media outlets to find their next location!

44 LOCAL FOOD GUIDE | EAST TENNESSEE

nourishknoxville.org

WINERIES & DISTILLERIES One way you can enjoy local flavors is by popping a cork or twisting a bottle cap. An increasing number of wineries and distilleries are cropping up in our area, demonstrating delicious ways to preserve fruits and grains. Some wineries are growing the fruit themselves, and many others are using Tennessee grown fruit. Some distilleries are using locally grown grains, as well as local herbs or other products to create distinct flavors. Want to see how these libations are made? Many of these makers are just a short drive away and open for tours and tastings. Per Tennessee law, a Farm Winery can offer tastings and sales of wine that is produced using 95% or more of their own fruit. Farm Wineries, however, do not bottle their own wine; they contract with a commercial winery in Tennessee to make and bottle the wine. Some states, such as New York, refer to farm wineries as “Estate Wineries. These wineries are designated with a wine glass symbol and may only be open seasonally, so be sure to call before heading out.
