Light of Joy Program Notes I wrote Light of Joy as a response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, CT that took place on December 14, 2012. If I had not been teaching elementary music that year in Virginia, this piece would probably not exist. However, through teaching these kids, the impact of the events in Newtown struck closer to home than I could have ever imagined. The title is a quote from Friedrich R端ckert's Kindertotenlieder (Songs on the Death of Children), a set of 428 poems written after two of the poet's own children died from scarlet fever. Composer Gustav Mahler set five of these poems to music. R端ckert refers to his deceased daughter as "Light of Joy" in the poem "Wenn dein M端tterlein" ("When your mother"). When your dear mother comes through the door, holding a flickering candle it seems to me as if you were entering too, you slipped into the room with her, as you used to do. O you, refuge of your father, light of joy, extinguished all too soon! The melody is derived from the order in which elementary students learn solfege. Constructed from the Kod叩ly method of music education, the melody occurs in this order: sol, mi, la, do, re, ti, fa. Furthermore, the piece pays homage to Sandy Hook through sounding the initials, S.H. (Eb and B or, in German, Es and H) on handchimes. These notes are the basis for the harmonies heard during the climax of the work. Each of the 27 victims is represented in the aleatoric middle section of the piece. The seven adults are symbolized through seven singing handbells, while the 20 children through 20 handchimes. The 4th through 8th grade classes at Redeemer Classical School premiered this piece on May 23, 2013. The 4th and 5th graders played the handchimes in the middle of the work.
