Research 1: Cooking app
Pepperplate
For serious cooks—cook weeknight dinners or host a dinner party for 12. Users can’t add a recipe in the app. Users had to register to use the app.
How to Cook Everything $4.99
No pictures. No nutritional info. Bad design. It’s only work if you look for something specific. Can’t share recipes. Some recipes are a bit misleading.
Mealboard $3.99
Help the users plan meals. However, they need to import the recipe from another website, and not all websites are compatible. Not user friendly. No Nutrition info.
Real Simple No time to cook? $0.99-7.99
Bad design. Can’t add own recipes. There is not many recipes available.
My Recipe Book $0.99
No meal planner. Can’t add own recipes on iphone. Doesn’t combine ingredients. Can’t edit or add.
Many of the apps can add the recipes’ ingredients to the shopping list but doesn’t keep track of how long the items will last. Most of the apps don’t allow the users to add their own recipes.

Cookbooks From Gordon Ramsay And Heston Blumenthal ‘Too Complicated And Expensive’ Says Survey
IS COOKING MORE COMPLICATED THAN IT SHOULD BE?
The survey of 2,000 adults found two-thirds (67%) said they find recipes intimidating with Heston Blumenthal and Gordon Ramsay getting a special mention for complicated cooking [...]
We are constantly bombarded with messages– beautiful, “easy” recipes that are more work than they seem. Does this inspire or discourage? Would more people cook at home if they weren’t overwhelmed with what or how they had to cook? [...]
The survey, commissioned by Italian food company Sacla’, found 35% of people said they were put off by the cost of ingredients, while 29% said recipes were too complicated. More than a quarter (27%) said hard-to-find ingredients stopped them using the books and more than half (53%) said they now find recipes online based on what they have got in.
http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013/01/14/cookbooks-too-complicated_n_2470155.html
Whats called “easy” cooking relies on foods that can be purchased with a minimum number of ingredients and doesn’t require a culinary degree. It leans heavily on the things your mom or your grandma taught you.

Hi, my name is Nathania. Thanks for sparing your time to talk to me today! I am working on a design project about a cooking app that could help people keep track of their ingredients, and also providing easy and healthy recipes. To start, I would like to get the sense of how you cook and then talk about ways to improve it and what tools could best help you — How many times do you cook in a week? What tools (books, apps, websites) are you using to help you cook?
Objectives
-
basic description of how they cook what tools do they use to help them what do they like / dislike about it, and why what they would like to have in a cooking app (their definition of a perfect cooking app) - what would they like to do after they cook - share the result / recipes (if self-made) - a gallery to save pictures of their cook - any additional insights
- Where do you usually buy your ingredients? Online, In-store?
- Where do you get your recipes?
What do you like about it? What makes it better than other tools? What do you dislike about it? What’s frustating and unnecessary? What would be your ideal cooking app? What do you usually do after you’re done cooking? do you like to take pictures of the food and share it (or share recipes*)? Do you have any additional thoughts about cooking, what could motivate you to eat healthy, or what could make you cook easier? — Thank you for your time. Have a great day ahead!

SIMPLICITY IS THE KEY
DEPENDABLE
Everything should be accessable with a click of a button. This app works as a tool to make them move their hands to create something good for themselves, not to add their work.
Don’t know what to cook for dinner? We got your back! Don’t know what good stuff you can make with your ingredients? We got your back! There are a lot easy ways to get a recipe suggestion from this app.
We give what they need.
Because cooking and eating aren’t something to be stressed about.
EVERYTHING SHOULD BE UNDERSTABLE
VISUAL ELEMENTS ARE IMPORTANT
Every word we use should be clear and to the point. Remember, they are not a ‘cordon bleu’ chef. We are here to make their life easy.
Pictures. Pictures. Icons. This is a cooking app, not a reading app. Don’t bombard the users with text.
If the first step is confusing, they’d end up calling for a delivery.
People will want to cook if there’s a nice-looking picture of the food. Yes, this is a way to attract and keep them users.

Critical Errors
Interactions
Unexpected Results
1. Don’t combine the “Search bar” and the “Advance search”
1. If the user doesn’t use the video, it will close when they scroll up.
1.Planner doesn’t feel necessary. Focus on the main features.
2. Amount of “Likes” should shown. People should be able to like your picture.
2. After created an account, ask the user to input their ingredients and tools, so they get an idea of what the app will be doing; they will get recipes based on the data they input.
2. Chat / message feature doesn’t feel necessary.
3. Need a short description at the “Tools” page. Also, make people able to add more tools.
3. Friend to Followers / ing.
3. Consider choosing “Save” or “Like” 4. Ask the user to upload the food after they’re done cooking. 5. Revise profile page. “Gallery” and “Save/ Like list” is enough. Put the “History” in navigation instead. 6. More words at “Submit” page. So the users doesn’t have to worry about uploading video and stuff.
