A modular vehicle allowing rapid transformation to suit vastly different scenarios. By being an attractive proposition for day to day work the vehicle will already be on location should disaster strike.

REQUIREMENTS

A vehicle that is fully adept for use by local authorities and emergency services but is equipped to come to the fore in catastrophic events such as major flooding and storms and even be quickly and easily modified to cope with more demanding scenarios up to major natural disaster. This comes from the realisation that often local authorities are often left to deal with disaster, often under equipped, before central government is able to act and supply greater resources.

There have alwasy been, and always will be desasters, both natureal disasters and those of our own making. Aa our planet is becoming more heavily populated there is greater potential for casualties and becomes more and more important that rescue teams are well equipped and able to respond quickly and efficiently. Yet currently there are no ground up, custom built disaster response vehicles

SKETCH DEVELOPMENT


The aesthetics started out as simple shapes, a box at the back for capacity and a circle at the front. The big sweep of the glazed area was originally inspired by observation decks and viewing platforms. this was intended to convey authority, but also transparency. Along with the dramatic side mounted vents for the huge amount of air consumed by the Gas Turbine, the exposed frame and the oversized wheels it gives a very distinctive character.


DESIGN SPECIFICATION

Requirements for the Sentinel: To be able to carry a team of 5 plus equipment or a team of 3 with heavy equipment To be able to operate hydraulic pumps and machinery To be capable of traversing rough terrain as well as respond quickly on tarmac To be able to wade for sustained periods of time To allow for movement of full units and/or modules through helicopter lift To allow for ‘lazy axle’ including the addition of a 5th and 6th wheel for increased payload To utilise a serial hybrid for motive power and power tools To be of compact dimensions To be of modular construction allowing for the addition of specialist equipment as and when needed To incorporate styling cues ifluenced by respected Off Road/Utility vehicles such as the Land Rover Defender



PROPOSAL



DRONE

The drone is a simple tricopter design that can be operated manually or semi autonimously using ultrasonic ranging (sonar). It utilises hybrid cameras to relay both visual and infrared images to the crew allowing them to see 3D mapping with a thermal image overlay. The drone also incorporates a small tannoy and microphone to allow two way communications, allowing the crew to advise or inform people from a distance.


Diagram shows the rotor movement and position of cameras. The drone also includes sonar sensory equipment, a microphone and lightweight tannoy.

Alternate track segments are held in place by a magnetic lock, when released it increases the level of grip available for progress on slippery surfaces

The rim is constructed from multiple segment with one side being more rigid than the other. The rigid side forms the base of the ‘wheel’ during road use and the more flexible one sits at the base of the all-terrain track. The entire assembly rotates around the hub for this transformation, with the hub locked the track revolves arund the fixed rim to propel the vehicle.

CONSTRUCTION

Sentinel uses a simple steel ladder frame as the base for the whole construction. this cradles an aluminium safety cell that provides rigidity, occupant safety and an attatchment point for exterior panels. The polymer body panels are non load bearing, though some are built around a metal frame for safety or structural rigidity. The chassis can facilitate a bolt on extension that allows the fitment of two extra wheels for added payload and cargo capacity.

Aero forms Czech art and Architecture Classic Tatras

Inspiration

The Brief

The project was to re-imagine the iconic Czech brand Tatra. Inspiration came from the Czech republics rich culture as well as aircraft and aero forms, much like the luxury cars from the 1930s and 40s for which the marque is best known. The brief dictated the use of a current platform so the Porsche Panamera was chosen for its shared rear engined heritage.

The Tatra T900s interior displays a strong horizontal theme and contrasting colours. This is both a nod to Tatras of old and to differenciate itself from clinical opposition,.


As with the interior the exterior styling of the Tatra displays a formal aesthetic but with more warms than German opposition. Reference was made to the 1930s Tatra streamliners and the rear of the car incorporates modern active aerodynamics.



ARC The Augmented Reality Car


Generation Y consumers continue to express diminished interest, forcing a reconsideration of what consumers want to do in and with their cars. How can an autonimous vehicle cater to these experiences and how does it change to be able to deliverboth active (driven) and autonomous (undriven) capabilities? The ARC interactive augmented reality car is designed to capture the imagination of today’s generation Y by appealing to their demands for a connected and personalised world and blurs the boundaries between the real world and the virtual one through embracing social networking and gaming.

Exterior Design


ARCs primary feature is the Smartscreen, the traditional windscreen and windows of a car have been replaced by a laminate screen consisting of a transparent LCD screen sandwiched between an outer layer of toughened transparent polymer and an inner touch sensitive layer. The Smartscreen allows both driver and passengers to change their view on the outside world, either by supplementing it with information or replacing it with simulation. Combined with simulator seats that provide shocks and vibrations the user can be totally immersed within the ARC experience regardless of how mundane or well known a journey might be. When travelling in ARC the users are presented with three modes, Live, Relax and GAME!


Interior Design


In Live mode the driver is in control of ARC and the Smartscreen only presents them with useful non distracting information such as that relating to navigation and safety. Away from the drivers line of site the passengers are able to access a wider variety of functions as if operating in Relax mode.

In Relax mode ARC is autonomous and controls retract into the dashboard. All passengers have access to the full array of options provided by the Smartscreen including an interactive frame that can provide film, TV, web browsing or even a mirror with a simple gesture. In addition to this the view from within ARC can be supplemented with local information, synced with social networking sites to allow photos and statuses to be viewed in situ or even enhanced with themes to change and excite the appearance of the environment they are travelling through. All this is comes with adaptable lighting and reclining seats that can provide a comfortable sleeping position and a variety of massage functions.

Lastly GAME! mode uses the simulator seats and the Smartscreen to provide a realistic gaming experience where users can find themselves fully immersed in a gaming environment or even pitted against other ARC users in driving simulations or epic tank battles that use real local geography and location for added intimacy.



Westfield Aero Concept


Avant Garde

A dramatic single seater with a longitudinally mounted Internal Combustion engine.

The Brief

This package allowed a lot of freedom and led to dramatic proposals. The brief was supplied by Elliot Hawkins, designer at Westfield cars. The project was completed in two stages, the first part was to design three seperate vehicles based upon three key words, Avantgarde, Beauty and Aerodynamics. Each came with its own distinct package. The second stage was to refine one of those designs as a group while respecting the choices and decisions of the client (Westfield, as represented by Elliot). Further design work was divided within the group and as the project progressed my primary responsibility were the CAD model and the package drawing. Our group, team Aerodynamic, went on to be chosen as winners through being the ‘best organised and most harmonious team.’

Beauty

Aiming for purity of form, this was based on a mid engined package with a transversely mounted Internal Combustion engine and a set windscreen position. An enjoyable package to work on.

Aerodynamic

A track car based upon the iRacer platform which inlcudes a conventional tubular Westfield chassis and an electric powertrain. This proved to be the most difficult to package.

Stage 1 Proposal


Beauty This proposal for a classically proportioned compact sportscar included a distinct central feature running from a light cluster in the forn facia through to a division in the air intake mounted behind the doors. It also displayed a long sculpted rear deck and a dramatic Gandini inspires truncated rear wheel arch

Avant Garde This proposal mixed classic cues such as the traditional grill with layered elements from a more modern style. It uses flowing layers of different colours and materials.

Chosen themes

A winged theme was chosen with a tight central pinch, the proposal to the right took the aircraft/podracer inspiration a step furtherwith the wide front section inspired by aircraft canards.

Beauty The theme for Beauty was clean and simple. The sketches pictured right developed the theme further by concentrating on reducing the visul weight of the carand making it appear longer and leaner.

Aerodynamic Interestingly the theme chosen for Aerodynamic was originally penned as an Avant Garde proposal. At this stage a hard top was a selected as a requirement but was later dropped due to its inelegance. The split rear wing pictured above, also in Avant Garde, made its way across to this package too.

Over the last 6 months we’ve been running a sponsored design project with Swansea Metropolitan University, my old college. We split the students into three different groups, Avant Garde, Aerodynamic and beauty. Three very different packages were provided for the each group. The students had to learn to work as a group and were given specific roles by course lecturer, Sergio Fontanarosa. I visted the students three times during the project to check on progress. On the final visit, Sergio, his colleague Paul Morrow, and myself selected the winning group, which was the team Aerodynamic. Team aerodynamic were chosen as the winning group as it was felt they were the best organised and most harmonious team. They had the Iracer package to design around, which was the trickiest to achieve and elegant solution with. -Elliot Hawkins
